Now to Ed Hettermann's wake. Left my hat in the car when entering the funeral home and disappointed Dan Justen. The rack is still there with no hats. Our friend "Schmaltz" Miller once said, "How can you take in so many events? I couldn't do it." Of course he couldn't! He's older than I am (by a couple of months). He should have followed us this past weekend. On Friday, we drove to Milwaukee to attend the ordination of Harold J. "Zeke" and Charlotte Bacon's son, Harold James, Jr., to the priesthood in beautiful Gesu church. Looking up gave us the idea that the ceiling of the church must be half way to heaven. "Zeke" and Charlotte can be mighty proud of a won derful family. -- And, if I say those kids have fine parents, it may seem being partial. I am. Two wide-spreading tents covered tables on the lawn where a bounteous feast awaited the crowd. It was our good fortune to sit with Mrs. Harry (Leone) Lawrence, Paul and Irene Heiger and Donald Givens. Conversation didn't lag. We've only started, "Sch maltz". Shoppe rightfielder Linda Frey on three pitches to end the game. Most of Wally's scoring came in the bottpm of the fifth when they bunched eight runs together on hits by Cindy Kinsala, Val Gilbert, Kelly Broderick, Michelle Lubben and Diane Knox. Aleen Tiffany had two hits in that same inning. Fashion Shoppe collected 12 hits in the game while Wally's knocked out 17. Joel Wakitsch Wally's Bike H. Europa Mtrs. Adam's Bros. Rad. McH. Arlene (slightly older) was a schoolmate at old McHenry High. It was nice to visit with their sons, Jack and Jim. Hadn't seen Jack in many a moon, but was happy to learn he receives the Plaindealer, courtesy of his father. ' Saturday morning we headed back to McHenry and Wonder Lake where Sam Zito and my godchild, Cheryl Weber, were united in marriage. Of course, the bride was beautiful. Must say Sam was a sharp looking groom. Another reception and a jolly time. A bit tired, we slept until 8 o'clock Sunday morning. Kinda late for us. Sunday noon found us in the Church of the Resurrection between Woodstock and Ridgefield where Father Bacon read his first Mass. ** Let me tell thee, that young priest is a standout. He performed like a veteran with confidence and a fine, God-given voice. A little humor mixed in, too. He has learned his lessons well -- a short sermon right to the point. _ Sisters and brothers-in- law of the celebrant took part in the Mass, also like veterans. To complete the family picture, servers and an usher were nephews. Met our long time friend Paul Walkington, who has been promising us some funny books for some time. Paul left the Pearson shindig long enough to cross the street to his home and'get the books. I started one and it is good for some laughs. The world needs laughs. So -- back to Petersen Park for the Walsh family picnic. First person we met was Jim Smith, one of those Johnsburg Cub fans, who chose a little Irish gal, Judy Walsh, as his bride. He never heard of the White Sox. We don't have a complete list, but know McHenry sent a delegation to see the Lawrence Welk show in person at Hoffman Estates a week ago. Marie Yegge was there with the Louie Yegges. The Don Weingarts and Don Dohertys were others in the delegation. Thought they were too young for the old one-a-two-a show. After winning in Crystal Lake, however, McHenry took it on the chin against Harvard (1-0) on Thursday and lost a Sunday doubleheader against un defeated Rockford East in three Connie Mack contests. Errors took their toll on McHenry as the only 1 run of Sunday's first game scored after Bob Greve let a left- field single go through his legs in which the runner ended up on third. A passed ball on a suicide squeeze play allowed the only run of the game to score. Pitcher Joe Bellich only gave up three hits but a combination of the error and a lead-off single by Gregg McPherron wasn't enough to keep McHenry in the game. In the second game, McHenry bunched three f o u r t h - i n n i n g s i n g l e s together to manage only one run in the 6-1 defeat. Tom Maxsom took the loss for McHenry. Although they lost their last three games, the legion is still undefeated in legion competition with a 3-0 record, but have dropped to a 2-6 mark in Connie Mack The American Legion hardball team is suddenly prooving that it will be a solid contender for the Legion or Connie Mack title this year. ; After squeeking by the Crystal Lake legion, 2-1 last Wednesday, the locals stood with a 3-0 legion record and a 2-3 Connie Mack mark. As of Wednesday, they are the only undefeated team in the American Legion Con ference. Coach Russ Williams, who coached the Crystal Lake Legion team a few years back, watched his McHenry nine play tight defense to preserve the 2-1 victory. McHenry scored its first run in the third inning when shortstop Bob Bryniarski, who reached base on an error, took second on a hit and run. Dave Colberg, the McHenry pUcher, was thrown out at first by the Crystal Lake' shortstop. A leftfield single by Gregg McPherron drove in Bryniarski from second. In the sixth inning, first baseman Kurt Valentin doubled and was -singled home by leftfielder Bob Greve. Crystal Lake also scored a run in their half of the sixth, but Colberg dominated Crystal Lake thru the seventh to gain the complete Why do I wrack my brain trying to remember way back whens? Probably nobody can remember the words of a song that went something like this: You can't holler down our rain barrel. You can't slide down our cellar door. Steve Mai, Ail-American In Baseball In his junior year at Baker University in Kansas, Steve Mai, a 1977 graduate of McHenry High School, was named to the National N . A . I . A . A l l - A m e r i c a baseball team. . During the past year, Mai batted .367 with 40 hits in 109 at bats. He was voted Most Valuable Junior on the Baker team and stole 25 bases in 25 attempts during the 27 games in which he played. His .93 stolen bases per game was good for fourth in the nation. The Wildcat shortstop batted .357 as a sophomore and has stolen 48 bases in 50 attempts in his college career. Also playing football for Baker, Mai is playing semi-pro hardball with Gurnee during the summer. Mai is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mai of McHenry. Like the swallows coming back to Capastrano, the ducks have returned to our back forty. One hen wad dling along, followed by two drakes. Still the eternal triangle. Some of you will be pleased to know that our new sports editor, Joel Wakitsch, is a Cub fan. Down came my picture with Sox drawn in, one of C l y d e B l a c k w e l l ' s masterpieces. Up goes some sort of Cub emblem. *Life has its moments. Joel Wakitsch Women's Thursday Morning Pistakee Golf There were many cap tured memories at Pistakee this week. Capturing the interest of all (and I also mean "Believe it or not by Ripley") Greta Pietko pulled off a "first" at Pistakee Thursday. She split her golf ball in half! Yes, after that "tee off" and the laughter had died down we decided to give her a new ball. Then ever so smoothly, Margritta Stilling skillfully chipped one in on No. 8 Followed by a "Wristy Flake" of the wrist Yvonne Matt pitched one in with a no putt. Beautfiul Cut! I hear Lori Huml keeps on hitting some spectacular shots. After a no putt on hole No. 2 Olaverne Gregory safely tucked away the ball.
