Oaks was also brillant defensively as Nolan's was unable to score until the bottom of the fourth when an unearned run came across the plate. Although Nolan's bats were silent, they never gave the game up for lost, as their enthusiasm remained throughout the game. The loss was tjgken graciously, and the teata** sense of humor was admirable. Cookie Stanowslu, of Oaks, was the winning pitcher as she gave up one walk and struck-out one batter. the top_of the first. Oaks jumped out to take the lead as the girls scored nine runs on 11 hits, and then held Nolans scoreless. The real explosion came in the third when 17 runs crossed the plate for Oaks. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD Contributors Please Read Wayne's West End vs. River Shannon -8:30 Game It looked like an upset, after three innings when Wayne's was leading River Shannon 4-3, but the tables turned as in the fourth inning River Shannon sent 19 batters to the plate, and 15 of them ended up scoring that inning, including a grand slam by Debbie Herdrich. Even though Wayne's West End came up on the short end of the score, they cer tainly kept River Shannon on their toes, as they battled back each inning causing poor defensive play by River Shannon as they claimed 10 errors. After a nine run fifth inning for Wayne's, both teams settled down, and River Shannon was able to stay on top defeating Wayne's 27-18. Doug Eschner wouldn't reveal the number of earned runs. Too many miss games on the flimsiest of excuses. If, therefore, these very- select, favored darlings choose to strike, to ,keep clubs from getting better compensation when they lose a major star, let them strike. It would be good for many of them to go without all their Brake Parts goodies for a full year. Oaks Marathon One suspects there'd be River Shannon better baseball, and better St. Regis baseball players, thereafter. Sunnyside And poor clubs would not be V.F.W. at such a disadvantage in Wayne's W.E. trying to be competitive, with Nolan Liquors better compensation. iiiilAU By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON. D. C. - Some Major League owners suspect a strike by players might still be necessary (in 1981) to bring players down to earth-and get them into the real world with their fel low Americans. The average Major Leaguer's salary is more than $120,000. They have a wonderful pension system, fine disability protection. They work only seven months a year. They earn additional money through commercial opportunities. They have all expenses paid when working those seven months a year. Yet despite these almost unheard-of advantages, many are prima donnas, un satisfied or complaining. And the standard of play on the field today is far below what it was twenty or thirty years ago. Every bump and scratch is catered to and the THURSDAY DIVISION STANDINGS Efforts of many con tributors are greatly ap predated. 0 5 Roni Rogers bis 55/8°5,oTRADe A Rad'a Stee KSSsgS*-15 % Active Sportswear IU /w f Q r ̂ e n g VYomen AtC Terry cloth Poly/cotton ^ Ull coordinated Shorts & Tops Etonic Golf Shoes Accidents will happen.
