"When wheat, oats, barley, shelled corn or other grains are stored on the farm for extended periods, proper steps and regular inspections are required to preserve the quality and prevent economic loss from insect damage," Susan A. Maraccini, acting county executive director of the McHenry . County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), said. Since warm weather is the ideal climate for rapid insect development, careful and frequent grain inspections may be necessary during this time. Maraccini advised far mers to look for insects on the exposed inside and outside bin surfaces, especially around the base, doors, aeration ducts, and joints or seams in the walls. "Check fpr water leaks through the roof or walls and look for evidence of rodent or bird entry into the bin," she said. When determining eligibility for the grain reserve program or com modity loans, ASCS con siders the condition of the storage structure and the commodity stored within the structure. Maraccini said farmers maintain ownership of and responsibility for their reserve supplies and are encouraged to check the,- grain often during the storage period. Market value of infested grain may be substantially reduced if the number of insect-damaged kernels is sufficient to lower the grade of the grain or if the number ' of insects in the grain causes it to be designated "weevily" on the grade certified. Discounts against the price paid per bushel are often assessed by the buyer if live insects are present in the grain. And some grain dealers may refuse to accept heavily infested grain that might contaminate their storage facilities. The ASCS official said reserve grain may be rotated as new crops are harvested. For instructions on proper rotating methods, contact the county ASCS office. Mrs. June Stuart, librarian, will serve as a liaison between the youths and those desiring a service. DISASTER AREA Gov. Thompson declared 10 counties acrosss north central Illinois a disaster area on June 4 after severe winds and torrential rains lashed and flooded the area on June 1 and 2. Damage, most of which was agricultural, was estimated at between $10 million and $15 million. These estimates are thought to be con servative because much of the area is still under water, and total damage cannot be assessed until the water has receded.
