the 1980-81 Legion requested to attend Michael Fresen, AFS student who will leave soon for his home in South Africa; entertains at open house held in his honor by his host parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Kinnerk. Guests at the social gathering are shown in background. M i c h a e l F r e s e n , McHenry's American Field Service student, from South Africa, was the guest of honor recently at an open house given by his host parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Kinnerk. Many friends at tended to wish the young man well. Michael will soon return to his hom,e country of South Africa. He has been living in McHenry the past school year, and was a member of the graduating senior class at McHenry high school. During the year, Michael has spent AFS weekends at Mt< Prospect and Batavia Where Not To Be high schools and attended a mid-year conference at the University of Illinois in Urbana. At the conference, topics discussed included world problems, problems of youth, and various ex periences, feelings, and problems involving the AFS program. About 20 countries were represented, including Austria, Holland, Peru, Egypt, France, and, of course, South Africa and the United States. Michael has been an active participant in McHenry high school during his senior year. He was on the football team, a member of the chorus and Sudent Council, and participated in the school talent show. In ad dition to his school obligations, he gave several slide presentations about his home cbtintry to community groups in, McHenry. The adult chapter of the American Field Service program in McHenry feels that the organization has been extremely well represented by this popular and responsible young man, and the community of McHenry will indeed miss him. Although the earth is bombarded by 360,000 lightning bolts every hour- ;. or 8.5 million bolts per d&y~ ,c. and lightning takes 120 to 125 American lives each year, the chances of any individual getting hif are small, ac cording to the current issue of National Wildlife magazine. Still, if you don't want to become a longshot statistic, it is wise to take the following steps during a thunderstorm: ...Get inside a house or large building, or an all- metal vehicle or truck cab- not a convertible or an open truck bed. Do not take shelter in a small, isolated shed or any other small structure in an open area. Inside a house, aVoid using the telephone. ...Don't let yourself project " above the' surroundingi landscape, as you'd do on a hilltop, in an open field, on the beach, or in a small boat. ...Get out of and away from water. ...Get off of and away from motorcycles, golf carts, and bicycles. ...Stay away from wire fences, railroad tracks, metal pipes and other metallic paths that can conduct lightning. ^r ; , ...In a forest, find shelter in a low area under a thick growth of trees. ...In the open, go to a low valley or ravine, but be on the lookout for flash flooding. „.If you feel your hair stand on end, drop to your knees^nd bend forward. J; 1 If you're with someone who is struck by lightning: ...Give the victim im mediate mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage." ...If a group is hit, treat any apparently "dead" victims first. Anyone who's conscious but breathing will probably recover spon taneously. ...Victims who seem stunned but otherwise unhurt should see a doctor as soon as possible. . The physical effects of a light ning strike aren.'t always obvious. ' Dramatics Workshop Offered For Youth srkshop in creative drarrfftics for young people ages 9 to 13 will be offered by McHenry County college during July. The workshop will' include sessions from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on each of the five Wednesdays during the month. The workshop sessions will introduce children to the theatre, to acting and to the process of putting on a play. T&y will choose a play, participate in mock tryouts and gain ease on stage through a variety of group warm-up exercises, ac cording, to • Lorraine Ringholm, instructor for the workshop sessions. To help the children get exposure to the>flavor of the legitimate theatre, the workshops will include a m o d i f i e d r e h e a r s a l schedule; designing sets and costumes, and doing make up. A field trip to a local theatre will also be included. The MCC workshop is designed to provide basic training for young people wishing to act in local plays, help them gain self con fidence, answer questions children may have about the theatre and provide a fun summer activity, Ringholm said. The cost of the workshop includes instruction and some supplies. One can register by telephoning the college at 455-3700. The workshop sessions will be held at the MCC campus on Route 14 at Lucas road in a portable classroom behind the Applied Science building. What Just One Person Can Do The Fullness of Christ's Message St. Paul warned against false teachers who teach "things that they ought not teach; thinking that religion exists to make them rich." (Titus 1:11) Some TV preachers say that religion is basically a way of thinking, the same as peace of mind. Christ, they claim, came primarily to help each person attain his or her highest possible human potential. Some have said there is no such thing as the social gospel; the only gospel is faith in Jesus. For some sin is the absence of peace or the loss of meaning. Such TV scenarios miss the central meaning of the mission of Jesus. He came to do the will of the Father in all things. His mission focused on the Kingdom of God which exists wherever the will of God is obeyed. It signals the reign of "truth and life, hpliness and grace, justice, love and peace," in the words of the Vatican Council. Christ's mission was toy restore the original order and harmony of all creation that had been destroyed by sin. Charity, which He taught to be the supreme law, calls for the liberation of individuals and the entire human race from every form of oppression, primarily from the bondage of sin. He taught us fidelity to the Father's will, even if that fidelity disturbed our peace of mind, "Father if it be possible take this cup from Me, but not My will but Thine be done." On the cross Jesus taught us the extent of His subor dination to the Father's driving passion for truth and justice. He did not merely proclaim faith. He labored ceaselessly to practice it. Preaching faith in Jesus is only the first step. Faith in the Lord calls for action. In His own words, we hear this point stressed, "Not everyone who says Lord, Lord will enter the Kingdom of God, but only those who do the will of the Father." There is a social gospel. Justice, truth and love require both faith in Jesus and Spirit-filled sacrifice directed not primarily to the preacher's TV budget, but to those in real need. Jesus calls us to share His mission; to have compassion on the poor, the weak and the suffering. He taught us that love of God and neighbor are intimately linked. Anyone interested in serving as a committee chairman for the 1980-81 Legion year is A MILKY WAi TO THE MOON Dairy people, wondering whether U.S. citizens realize just how much milk is produced in this nation, have worked out examples to help visualize the production. For example, one year's production by our nation's dairy farmers, if stacked in h a l f - g a l l o n c o n t a i n e r s , would reach from the earth to the moon and back-about nine times. And that's from about 10.7 million cows that can each produce up to 24 quarts of milk a day. of Religious Divisions? It's possible to be just a Christian!
