What Just One Person Can Do Paper Provided Sound Advice Beautification Project & The recent movement of a majestic 35-foot spruce tree through the streets of McHenry was the result of the generosity and civic Interest of some of the city's cltisens. As his personal gesture of gratitude to the city In general, and to the Police and Public Works departments In particular, Al Williamson arranged for the tree to be moved from Fairway drive to the busy corner of Routes 31 and 120. Deploring the thought of cutting the beautiful specimen because of Its copdnulng growth overshadowing their home, Mr. and Mrs. James Weak man offered the treeto the City. It was with joyous relief they learned it could be moved and a small celebration occurred as they became part of the escort that accompanied the tree through town. Accepting the tree for the City was Alderman Nolan, who pointed to the timeliness of the gift fitting in with the Beautification committee's planting program. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Select Youth Cast For Performance Of Musical summer a significantly higher number of cases of intestinal flu were treated in Bradford, Pa. City manager Pat Nuuo couldn't offer any explanations but that wasn't good enough for Katherine Nichols of the Bradford Journal. She learned that local pharmacies had dispensed 1,050 prescriptions for drugs lo treat giardia. The story led to public demands for an explanation. It was learned that several doctors at the Bradford hospital had met in August and decided not to inform the public so as to avoid panic. A team of specialists came and identified the city water system as the source of a parasite called giardia. But it was not until Sept. 24 that legal notice was gi\|m that coliform was found In the water; coliform is a sign of sewage contamination. The Bradford Journal weekly) Informed people the danger to health, ai urged them to boil the water. City officials minimized the problem and attacked the Journal. The paper reported tKfet cases of giardiosis were diagnosed as early as July but were not reported lo authorities. The city manager claimed not lo have known about giardiosis til Oct. 23. n Oct. 26 the Journal brought the issue lo a head with a special edition. Its warnings probably saved hundreds of residenls from infection. Subsequent tests conducted by federal and state laboratories seemed lo disprove the contamination iheory and many people, thinking that the wateir was pure, stopped boiling it. The Journnl again steprwl in, interviewing an official of (he Disease Control center in Atlanta, who advised con tinued caution because it is extremely difficult to detect giardia and negative test results are not conclusive. It was explained that there had been 23 outbreaks of giar diosis in the U.S., and while all 23 were traced lo thfT water system, in only three cases had giardia been proved to be in the water. Finally^ a health emergency was declared, and steps were taken to clear up the problem. What can one person do? One person with courage and determination can stop an epidemic. Preparing Pet For Fourth Giving sofne forethought to your pet's comfort during the July 4th weekend can add to your enjoyment of the holiday. Hypertension and stomach upsets among pets are fr^juent complaints, ac- t cording to Dr. Paul M. Keene, executive director of the Illinois State Veterinary Medicpl association. The loud and startling noises of fireworks along with bar becue leftovers and treats from well meaning holiday guests are the greatest contributors to these ailments. Increased traffic on the streets, greater outdoor family activity and a general excitement about the holiday results in an increase in injury cases, Dr. Keene reports. He advises "emergencies are better prevented than treated." The Illinois Stale V e t e r i n a r y M e d i c a l association suggests the following: 1-Keep your pet confined doting the holiday ac tivities...in a fenced yard, on a leash, or in the house. 2-Kaep your..pet on its regular diet...no extras. *3^ffyou have a nervous pet and anticipate extra noise or activity over - the holiday, your veterinarian can provide a tranquilizer. 4-Don't letypur pet ride in the car willfhis head out the Window; eye and ear damage can be caused. 5-While it is unwise to leave your pet unattended in the car (particularly during the holiday excitement), if you find it absolutely necessary to do so, be sure it is only for a short period of time. At- least two windows on opposite sides of the car should frp slijghtlv opened lo allow for circulation of air. 6-lLyaur pel accompanies you into any area where there is a possiblitiy of wildlife, it is imperative that his protection against rabies is current. Skunks are a primary carrier of the disease, along with foxes, raccoons and other species. * t Following these simple procedures can contribute lo you and your pet's en- ijoyment of the holiday weekend.
