SDA Y.JULY: CHUM SERVICES In McHenry County Mental Health Service System r »% Wonder Lake Bible Church * 4 Each week I am reminded that our wonderful Cord offer* many "fringe benefits" that accompany salvation. Some of these "benefit*" are listed in P*alm 109:1-5. It i* my firm conviction that, everything else being equal, the contented believer In Chri*t will live longer, feel better, and enjoy life far more, in every wholesome way, than hi* nelgr-Sor who doe*n't fear theLord, nor trust His dear Son. Home life is far more congenial for the Redeemed of the Lord, that is, if they allow the love of God to rule in their hearts and lives. Thank the Lord for all His "fringe benefits".^ 7501 HOWE DRIVE, WONDER LAKE, ILLINOIS Alliance Bible Church MIS W. Bull Valley ltd. Rev. FRONT STREET McHENRY, IL 30S-9B31 The McHenry County Comprehensive Mental Health Service system of ficially began in McHenry county in June of 1979. The system's beginning was made possible through a monetary grant from the National Institute for Mental Health. This money made possible the development of comprehensive mental health services in McJt^nry county. Comprehensive means" that persons with widely varying mental health needs can now be served more completely. In many cases, they no longer need to seek iervices great distances from iWir homes, but in- tead can receive the help need within the county area, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is not to say the system provides all the mental health services n^ried by McHenry county, but that it does provide for a wider array of mental health services than ever before possible. Providing help to more people, more of the time, is the goal of the Mental Health system. The services of the Mental Health system includes: Administrative services, consultation and education, 24-hour emergency services, rehabilitation services for the mentally ill, day ajnd evening treatment services, Mitchell Sales, Inc. Administrative Services - "Administrative Services provide for policy making, administration of funds, the conducting of research, evaluation, and planning. The task of the ad ministrative unit is to provide for the continued efficiency and effectiveness of the Mental Health system in its delivery of services to the community.- Ad ministrative services are conducted by the local McHenry County Mental Health board and its staff. The board is the recipient of the funds and the local ad ministrator of the grant which makes the system possible. Consultation-Education Services-Consultation and education services provide for the continuing education of mental health professionals in the com munity, as well as the distribution of information and education on mental health issues to the com munity at large. Speakers are available to speak to local community groups on a variety of topics regarding mental health in our everyday lives. The job of the consultation and education unit is to make the public more aware of the important role mental health plays within in dividual lives and of the service available to citizens of McHenry county who wish to improve and maintain their own mental health. Rehabilitation Services- Rehabilitation services provide for the rehabilitation of the mentally ill through a vocational rehabilitation workshop for the mentally ill and a jail inmate screening program for the county jail. Rehabilitation services provide evaluation, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, job placement and follow-up services. These services are provided in an effort to assist emotionally disturbed persons to return to productive satisfying lives. Emergency Services- Emergency mental health services are provided to all McHenry county residents, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anyone needing immediate help can call the loll free mental health Crisis Line 800-892-8900 and receive assistance from a trained professional any lime of the day or night. On call - on site crisis intervention workers are available to meet with persons who may need immediate assistance. Professionals (such as m i n i s t e r s , p o l i c e , emergency room per sonnel), as well as lay people, may call for advice and assistance. Common reasons for calling the crisis number may include danger of emotional or physical harm due to a difficult family situation, abuse of drugs or alcohol, sev depression, suicidal threats, running away, frustration with children, loneliness, or any recent trauma which has caused an individual to feel out of control. Day-Evening Services- Day and Evening Treatment services provide intense individual, group and family counseling to persons who have been or may be in danger of hospitalization due to the severity of their emotional illness. These services are geared to provide the most intensive mental health treatment possible, while allowing for the person to remain in the community and, hopefully, prevent their admission to a residential treatment center, such as a psychiatric )hospital. In the delivery of mental health services, whenever possible, persons are assisted while they remain in their familiar, everyday surroundings; day and evening treatment is one of the services which makes this possible. Transitional Living Ser vices-Transitional living services provide for the successful return to the community of those persons who have been hospitalized. These persons are said to be in transition between in stitutional care and re-entry into the community. Transitional living gives the individual a chance to slowly make the transition by providing supervision in day-to-day living ex periences, such as personal hygiene, housekeeping, decision making and financial budgeting. Many times persons who have been hospitalized, or have in some other/way been removed from the routine of daily living, need assistance in regaining these everyday survival skills. T r a n s i t i o n a l l i v i n g facilities consist of a large home for group living, as well as individual apart ments for supervised in dividual living. Transitional living is not a substitute for institutional care, but in stead an alternative geared to help the individual return to independent living. Out-Patient Services-Out patient services provide counseling and therapy to individuals, groups and families. Out-patient ser-, vices are those services which most people think of fir§t when they think of mental health services. Persons who are ex p e r i e n c i n g d i f f i c u l t - emotional problems in do- justing to change and growth in their daily lives or who may be having other con cerns about their individual welfare or that of their families or friends may wish to receive out-patient ser vices. Everyone needs help now and then in solving emotional problems or questions which have gotten the best of them or perhaps their families. Problems such as family conflicts, conflicts at school, drug or alcohol abuse, marital conflicts, difficulties with co-workers and-or friends, loneliness and many others are typical reasons for seeking assistance. Out- •e ^patient services are there to help persons find and act op the solutions to their problems, so that their lives may be happier and more secure. In-Patient Services-In- patient services provide services for persons who are BACK TO THE BIBLE Does the Bible seem confusing to you? Do you find that when you study the Bible you don't get much out of it? Cpme Study with Us CHURCH OF CHRIST 401 N. OAK ST.-CRYSTAL LAKE, ('/» block north on Rte. 176) Raymond T. It is important to remember that the Com prehensive Mental Health Service system is a system of services designed to meet the mental health needs of a wide variety of McHenry county residents. Although this system of services itself may be only one year old, the organizations and agencies designated to provide these greatly needed services represent some of the oldest and most respected social and mental health* service organizations in McHenry county. Eight agencies provide cooperatively for this comprehensive system of mental health services and they are: Family Service & Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County, McHenry County college ( J a i l R e h a b i l i t a t i o n program), McHenry County Department pf Health McHenry County Mental Health board, McHenry County Senior Citizens council, Youth Services Bureau for McHenry County, Pioneer Center for the Exceptional and Woodstock Residence. The mental health system represents the cooperative efforts and dedication of many professionals and t h e i r r e s p e c t i v e organizations. The system represents a concept of community mental health based on the primary belief that services must meet, the many diverse needs of people within a community. More important, it has been built on the premise that in order to deliver the best mental health services possible to a community, p r o f e s s i o n a l s a n d organizations must work together with a commitment to the people they service and not to the betterment or promotion- of their own organizations. The concept of com prehensive mental health services puts the person in need of assistance first and the provision of quality services to meet those needs /OS its most important task. -• For more information regarding the McHenry County Comprehensive Mental Health Service system caH 455-6910 or 455- 2828.
