MEDIA MONITOR Heavenly Miss USA to conquer universe? by Steve K. Walz New York--When Bob Barker euphorically announced that Miss USA of 1980 was Shawn Nichols Weatherly of South Carolina, the gorgeous, blue-eyed blonde wasn't really sure what cwould happen to her lifestyle. Sumter, South Carolina isn't exactly cos mopolitan and before Shawn had time to enjoy the taste of victory with her folks back home (includ ing three brothers and two sisters), America's newest media personality was being whisked from city to city to pose for photographers and being asked to answer the same questions over and over again from an inquisitive press. By the time I had the chance to interview Miss Weatherly in Manhattan, the statuesque beau ty with the 'Dukes of Hazzard' charm, was apologizing profusely for looking "tired and worn out." Funny, but if all women looked as good as Shawn did despite her fatigue, the average male wouldn't mind at all. Star trek Only 20 years old, Shawn , has achieved more in the last year than most people accomplish in a lifetime. And despite her good fortune, Shawn isn't even pining to capture the coveted Miss Universe title this week. "I'm very happy with what I have. I will have no qualms about it if I don't end up in the 'final twelve.' I never even thought about this kind of competition <imtil I was 16 years old," Shawn began to explain in her seductive southern drawl. "I liked to tap dance but daddy didn't like it, so I figured the only way for him to see me perform was to participate in the Junior Miss Pageant where I did the routine. From there I started to find out which contests offered the best opportunities and realized that the Miss USA contest definitely was the better route to take." The rest of course, is history. Shawn has also completed three years of college at Clemson University where she minored in communications. Will she do modeling, TV and/or p.r. work? Shawn looked at me and with a straight face and boasted, "I want to be a sportscaster! I love sports and I love interviewing people. I'm into football and basketball mostly." /Curiously enough Shawn's beau is Dwight Clark, the handsome ^ide receiver for the San Francis co 49ers, who is also a graduate of Clemson. Do I hear wedding bells? "Well I do have some personal goals that at this time I would rather not discuss," Shawn said diplomatically. As^the hard-working girl from South Carolina prepares herself to become America's goodwill ambassador in Korea, Shawn expressed some apprehension about her dealings with her foreign pageant mates. "I'm anxious to go, but I don't like the current political situation over there, even though I know we will be protected. Also, I'm a little afraid of dealing with some of the girls. Since I can't speak their language I won't really be able to get to know them. That will make me feel cutoff and I've never experienced that before," she lamented. Actually, all Shawn really has to do is flash those lovely eyes and show off her lissome figure for the judges. And if she does make the 'final twelve,' her wit should propel her to new heights.
