STAFF PHOTO- Myron Bentz Is MVP JOEL WAKITSCH East Stars Sweep In Men's 12 99 Myron Bentz slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Eastern division a 21-20 victory in game two of the Men's TwelveiinchlAll Star contest. The win gave the Eastern division Stars a cleajp sweep of the Sunday doubleheader and further demonstrated their domination over the Western division this season. There was plenty of hitting and homeruns by both squads as they combined for 97 hits and 13 homeruns in two games. Jim Yaworaki, leftfielder for the East, led all hitters with eight base hits. Yaworski after drawing a base on balls his first time at bat, hit safely eight straight times before lining out to the first baseman. In game one the Eastern division scored in every inning, including a seven i^in first, and won easily 27-15. Jim Yaworski went five for five with four RBI's to lead the East. Myron Bentz and Rich Meyers both went three for five with four RBI's. Myron included a triple, sacrifice fly and three- run homer. Joe Dehn, Ron Miller, Vinnie Freund, Don Bentz and Doug Freund included three hits each in the 32 hit offense. Pete Blackburn added a 3-run homer. The top three batters in manager Wayne Frantz's Western division lineup each went four for five in game one but the rest off the lineup could not even match them in hitting. Mike Rogers, Wayne Hiller and Tom Spasojevich provided a potent 1-2-3 punch. "Spaz" included a two-run double, three-run homer and six RBI's in the game. Mike Weber came off the bench and slammed a solo homerun in the fifth. Wayne Hiller made the defensive play of the game when he stopped a Myron Bentz fly ball from going over the fence. Steve Rohrer, manager of the Eastern Stars, found his team down 15-5 after four innings in game two. Three more runs in the top of the fifth gave the West what ^eemed like an overwhelming 13 run lead. But that did not stop the East as they came up with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and likewise in the sixth to take a 19-18 lead.* Rick Wiegman punched a two-run homer for the Western division in the seventh putting the West up 20-19. The bottom of the inning brought up Joe Dehn who singled sharply to right. Myron Bentz followed with his two-run homer, giving the East a clean sweep. Myron Bentz had three more hits besides the homer including a two-run double. Rich Meyers went four for four with three RBI's. Don Bentz had three hits and four RBI's including a two-run homer. Twig Miller went three for three while Jim Yaworski added three hits. Vinnie Freund came off the bench and hit a two-run homer in the sixth. John Burke held a hot bat for the Western division as he hit a pair of homeruns, went three for four and drove in seven runs. Burke also made a great catch in center on a drive to the fence. Wayne Hiller and Tom Spasojevich hit back to back homeruns in the first inning. Mike Rogers added a three-run blast in the third while Rick Wiegman homered in the seventh. This year's most valuable player award goes to Myron Bentz. The slugging third baseman from Foxhole Tap had seven hits, seven runs scored and eight RBI's in the doubleheader. Bentz included the winning homer in game two plus a double, triple and another homerun. On the first hole of sudden- death, after both golfers tied with 72, Overton birdied the hole while Jackson took a par to hand the title over to Overton. Winning the longest drive competition on number 16 was Phil Oeffling, and Butch Meyers ended up only 16 inches from the cup on hole nine to gain closest-to-the- pin honors. At the buffet dinner following golf, the Bear's Roland Harper said he is at 95 per cent and should be at ,100 per cent recovery from his leg injury by the time the season starts. Bill Gleason, the MC and sports writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, commented that since most Chicago cham pionships come in 40-year cycles, the Bears are due for another title in 2003. FRONT ST.. McHENRY They aren't going to catch* me with my pen down this time. After talking with Laura, our makeup artist, my head is finally on straight. It is hard to believe In dependence Day, more commonly referred to as the Fourth of July, is just around the corner from another early deadline. & JF The first official day of summer hadn't arrived when sales on hot weather logs were being advertised in the\same isfeues as coming fall sfylesr For many years this big holiday signalled the American Legion carnival. Everybody pitched in to help the members. In turn the Legion did much for the community. John J. Bolger and some of his pals never forgot how I look tickets for the wrestling shows and accidentally left the tent flaps open so the kids could crawl in free. I got some dirty looks from the promoter, but looks didn't kill. Young boys used to str£j|> on a cap gun a week in a* vance of the holiday and go bang-bang all over the place. They didn't want to take the belt off to go to bed. Ten cents would buy a big pack of small firecrackers. Put a few of those under a tin can and you had quite a boom. \ Then came laws after fingers and eyes were lost. Laws or no laws, we still hear a lot of booming each year. ^Before local hardball went the way of the horse and buggy, there was always a big baseball game on the Fourth. If is was a John- sburg-McHenry game, the natives were mighty restless. SUDDEN THOUGHT: I hate to throw a'bone in the garbage bag while thinking how much some dog would enjoy it. After that rough weather at the dedication of the lights at Petersen park, Ron Miller urged me to come out again to a game when the weather was better. Came the 12" Softball <A11- Slar games on Sunday and fat wirtz phoned to give me the you-ali come invitation. So, I packed a comfortable lawn chair in the gas buggy Sunday afternoon and took off for the park. Wayne and Ina Meddings and Ted McNish were other chair setters, but the cool winds blew them out early Wayne said he has the words to that rain barrel song. Told him to send it in. He may have another verse that we didn't get. Would you believe? Ensconced in our chair with cigar steamed up, what met our eyes but a pretty, little blond raking the diamond. Barefoot! Oblivious to the crowd aqd the players, Cookie Stanowski did a good job of getting the diamond (n shape. As Georgie Gobel would say about his jground- skeeper, you donVl_hardly find those kind no more^ Couldn't believe I would leave the comforts of our living room with the Sox game on TV to go to see the All-Stars. I wasn't sorry. It was fun. v -- ' Those Stars are a real nice bunch of fellows. Helpful, too. They stood ready to help the umpires, Don Bentz and Chuck Cuda. make decisions: Players are out there for fun and exercise. Some godd natured ribbing is thrown |n to boot. It is a slow pitch game so batters wait and tee off with some mighty hot shots. There seems to be a general opinion that the fence around the outfield should be out another 15 feet. It all depends on whether you are the batter or the outfielder. Saw many fans and athletes on the sidelines. Ron Conway and John Huff checked on the "football" score." John McGee's legs must have been cold in those shorts. ^ Dick Hiller and Bill Oef- fling were not in uniform. Dick Doherty looked like Mr. Fashion Plate. Hank Hiller, old time scorekeeper for the John- sburg Tigers, looked on. He didn't have^o many runs to record in his hardball days. Looking through two screens didn> make things too clear, but the Meyers family of Johnsburg seemed lo be well represented. Softball has really taken our area by storm. Wives, children, giri friends and the whole darn family-enjoy the games. Looking out onto the diamond, it occurred to me that if I were picking a team for a lug-of-war tussle, those big Bentz men would be first choice. Man, they are big! Note: I goofed.
