In a checkup iwo years ago my doctor discovered I had the same problem The size, of the aneurysm was about two inches I have been led to believe that survival from an operation to repair an aortic aneurysm is very risky and that qualified surgeons for ihis operation are few and hard to find Can you tell me something about what I can expect? Can you give me the name of the surgeon who operated on you?" -- T.J. Answer -- T.J. can expect great i rouble unless he gets moving. When I discovered I had an aortic aneurysm, the iwo doctors who examined is^--jne warned lhat it was a walking lime bomb, that I could expect a rupture of the artery at the place of the aneurysm in perhaps three years. Such a rupture usually brings quick death unless ihe aneurysm breaks against the spine, which sometimes serves as a short lived tourniquet. More men than women have aortic aneurysms. Most of those are in their late fifties or older. Some doctors say it develops from stress. It is impossible for me to believe lhat qualified surgeons for repairing an aortic aneurysm are few and hard lo locate. There are at least 10 in Tuscan-a(| very good. I know ttyfi Hhuston has many more .' The eastern city where T.J. Vves probably has five or six. He can phone ihe county medical society for their names. My operation took place five years ag;;. T.J. could arrange lo have done for him what was done for me. When ihe aneurysm was first suspected.; my surgeon performed a trans-femoral arch lest. A special dye was injected into the artery below ihe groin and the surgeon and I watched on a video screen as it flowed through ihe arteries lo the weakened section of the aoi The swelling, or bulge, of ihe artery then became plain for us 10 see on ihe screen. * The operation was scheduled for several weeks later. Meantime, I went lo a medical library and researched the problem, learning lhat a dacron sleeve would be inserted by the surge sr. ;r. the opoi »•»'»£. aorta. I learned, loo, that silver wire was used lo make such repair many years ago,, and that nylon was used later. Bui the nylon laddered like a run in a stocking. Dacron does not ladder, they say, and will last forever. I hope so. The only problem I had before the Big Event was a mixed-up nurse who came to my room at midnight before the operation and handed me a pill and a glass of water. I said lo her. "What the hell is this?/Nobody said anything abojfl pills." Taken back, she asked. "Aren'i you Mr. tlen?" I replied, outraged, 'Allen! Of course not. My lame is Riblet." She scooted- out of the room and disappeared, I learned later of a man down ihe hall named Allen who was there for open heart surgery. Vs* x •v>£* . V A cjA o° ->»x o<? <»oV° qPV • The operation was per formed and I walked out of the hospital in seven days with a scar descending from the sternum to the lower pelvis. My recovery was normal and rapid, and I drove my car within 16 days from the date of the surgery. Everything in my life since has Been good and normal - and I mean EVERYTHING. The only bad result that occurs for some is that 77 percent of the patients are unable to perform normally in sexual contact. Question -- "when a person abuses freedom of the press the way you did, Mr. Riblet, in your column about in surance companies, then he becomes a liability to our country. The information you gave was misleading and an absolute falsehood. Your writing is ridiculous." - Charlie G.3. CLU. Answer - Charlie's reading mind doesn't focus so well. Thus, I have once again learned that irony is often wasted on those who do not wish to understand what they see in print. What I wrote was that all the casualty insurance com panies do indeed pay off as stated in their policies. However, I said I thought lhat many of us either do not understand, or don't wish to understand the meanderings in the wording of the average hospitalization policy. It is the insurance companies lhat are misleading, not I. The exact words that preceded the soft indictment of insurance companies, the words lhat Charlie didn't get, were: "Here is an exaggerated and fictional example.."." Charlie needn't worry about losing a free press so long as so many journalists ask ihe hard questions that stir people to sometimes protest. Question -- "In which areas of ihe U.S. does your column "Past 65" appear? Do you have correspondents all over? Are you a senior yourself and how much of a writer are vou?"-Dorothy F. Answer -- The column appears in papers all over ihe country and in Canada. My correspondents are many; all of them, like Dorothy, readers of the column who have problems or seek or offer information. - Sometimes, a reader is mad at me and says so. Yes, I am an elder -- 72, an^sfti-time newspaperman and author of four books and a slim volume of poetry. Question -- " beg to differ with you about women not crankin# autos in the good old days. My father laught me how lo crank our 1914 Model-T without getting my arm broken when the crank kicked back. I weighed 80 pounds then. To keep from breaking my arm I didn't grasp the handle with fingers on one side and the thumb of the other Instead, I placed one hand on top of the handle of the crank and all five fingers around one side of it. If it should then kick back, my hand was thrown off and no arm broken. Sometimes, when my father wasn't around. I cranked with my fool instead of my hand. At 81 I am not as alert as I was at 15. Who is?" -- Naomi A.E. Answer -- Alas! No many, if any. Question -- "Why did Social "Security turn me down when I applied for disability? I do get a SS widow's benefit check every month. m£ arthritis does not permit me to work" -- Lora G H 'Answer -- If SS cannot give Lora a satisfactory answer and she is convinced thai she should receive disability benefits, she would do well to seek help from the Naiional Organization of Social Security Claimants' representatives ai their loll free number -- 1-800-431- 2804. Question -- "Can you help me? My wife of 45 years is a fine woman and very good looking but she never gives me a chance lo win an argument when the point in question is about something she wants bad bul which I ihink she shouldn't have. She nearly always cries then, except when she gives me a kiss at just ihe moment I ihink I have won my point. Then I know I am going to lose ihe argument. I am 66 anH stumped."--Halbert Q. Answer -- I should ihink lhat by ihis time in his life Halbert would have learned lhat most every woman is born with a powerful talent. In a crisis she invariably knows exactly when to swoon or when to croon. Question -- "Can you tell me how much of our savings ihe federal government will lake when either I or my husband die£ first? We are both over 70. We have a son who is 35." -- Anna G. Answer --- Anna does not say what her tax position is and ihe\ amount' of savings. And she should be careful lo keep that information mostly to herself so as to be certain to keep out of the clutches of greedy people. She could consult officers! at her bank, and agents at Internal Revenue Service for accurate information. Write to Carl Riblet. Jr. at P.O. Box 40757.
