Mike Riley singled In two closely played losses, the McHenry legion team showed well in the legion conference tour nament last Saturday in Addison. In the opening game of the tourney, Dave Colberg pitched seven strong in nings, but five McHenry errors took their toll as Glen Ellyn took command 7-5. McHenry drew first blood in the second inning on a two- run homer by thirdbaseman Phil Brenner over the left- field fence. Bob Greve had singled ahead of Brenner and scored on the round tripper. Glen Ellyn theri scored two rims in the third when a walk and an error by usually surehanded Dave Maurer were followed by a sacrifice bunt to first base and a single. The score was tied at two. McHenry later scored two more in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single by Kurt Valentin. Colberg and Maurer both tallied on the play after reaching on fielders choices. McHenry led 4-2. The roof caved in during the Glen Ellyn sixth however as four hits and a costly error gave the enemy four runs and a 6-4 lead. Both teams tallied in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the game ended 7-5. Kurt Valentin was two for four with three RBIs while Brenner had his homer in two at bats with two RBIs. Colberg gave up nine hits, but only three earned runs in the complete-game loss. Shoved into the loser's bracket of the double- elimination tourney, McHenry battled Lockport in an action-packed one run affair. Like Colberg in the first game, Joe Bellich pitched another complete game, but McHenry came up short again, losing 4-3. Once again McHenry held an early 2-0 lead as Gregg McPherron led off the game by being hit by a pitch. Dave Maurer then reached base on an erfor and Valentin grounded to the pitcher before Mark Vogt reached on another error. Mc Pherron scored on the play. Maurer scored on a Ken Hoff fielder's choice and Bob Greve took a third strike to end the inning. In the second, the locals increased their lead to 3-0 as Phil Brenner scored after reaching on an error. Joe Bellich then hit a one-out single to right to score Brenner. Bellich started out the bottom of the second by striking out the first two batters, but LocKbort followed with a run on two singles. Both teams played stagnant ball until Lockport tied the game in the sixth with two runs on two hits and a walk. McHenry wasted a Dave Maurer double in the seventh before Lockport scored the winning run when their catcher shoved a game- winning single out to left with one out and a man on second. Bellich struck out 12 Lock- port batters and gave up only three earned runs on nine hits. \ Coach Russ Williams felt the tournament was suc cessful despite the two loses and said his team showed fine poise by beating Rich mond 3-2 last Wednesday to get into the tournament. McHenry now has a 7-1 record in conference play and still sits atop the other legion teams with one more round to go. ® announced be sponsoring "a July game against past legion alumni at, 11 am at McCracken Field. Starting off with the Nifty Niners group, the event for the day was Team Play, with \Janet Conway and Alta Gierke combining forces to winfim place and in second the team of Melanie Frett and Martha McCrary. Low putts of 34 went to the team of Inez Burelli and Shirley Smith. In the 18 hole division today found Match Play and Consolation tournaments being decided, except for Class A, which was post poned until Friday. In Class B Espar Oja wpn her match over Carolyn* Harger, Jo Ready defeated Betty Rode in Class C and in Class D Dorothy Hollander won over 'Toots Gerstad. Consolation in A found Letty (no longer Sandy) Busscher winning over Lynn Schmitt, MaVlene Smith over Barbara Leight in Class B, Trish Sayler over Kathy Greer in C and in Class D Frieda Miller over Betty Gossell. The outstanding STAR of the day is Virginia Turner shooting a super round of 87 with birdies flying everywhere on No. 1, 3,12 14 and 15. If that wasn't enough more icing on the cake was chipping in on No. 1, (the hard way of getting a bird) and then doing it again on No. 12 by holing out a 9 iron shot fifty yards from the green. This is Virginia best round to date at McHenry and she also had low net for the day with a 65 and only 27 putts. In the r " °r low gross play Marlene Smith posted a 103 in Class B, in Class C Maddy Holmes with a 113 and Marcie Wakitsch shooting 123 in Class D. Low net in Class C went to Dorothy Hollander while in Class B and D Smith and Wakitsch also won those honors. There was some fine putting going on with low putts over all going to Fran Herrmann in Class D with 26, Maddy Holmes with 28 in Class C and Marlene Smith rolling in 30 in B Class. Other birds reported were Joan Buss on No.6 and Anna Johnson on No. 14. A well executed 7 iron shot by Virginia Spengel found its way home on No. 17 and Betty Gossell chipped in on No. 4. The beautiful day the girls enjoyed had to account for the good play and Betty Rode just decided playing in the sand and water was just as good as going to the beach! But then Kathy Greer decided the beach would have been better for her after she got done hitting all those trees trying to knock them down out of her way. Such is the plight of avid golfers. Next week is Hullabaloo Day and those who are planning on playing in this annual fun day, tickets can be purchased at the pro shop. Following a three-day postponement because of injuries, the match between Virginia Turner and Betty Mohan to determine Match Play winner in Class A was played on Friday, the Uth. Taking the first three holes to give her a psychological edge, Virginia held the lead going into the turn. Early on the back she dropped one, only to pick it up for a three- hole lead approaching No. 15. Although her tee shots and putting stood her in good stead, Betty's approaches left much to be desired and, taking a double bogie on 15 to Virginia's par, the march was closed. Both girls played commendable golf, but as her previous opponents will attest, Virginia's cool steadiness and continual command of her game put her in the winner's circle. Hurry back Liz, this is much harder than playing golf.
