"EARL WALSH' So I Hear Met Gary Lockwood and learned he claims to be the No. 2 White Sox fan in McHenry. His wife, Cheryl, says he had a fit when his children took a bus trip to Wrigley Field and came home with Cub caps. The next night I met some more good and faithful Sox fans, Dennis Welter, Bob and Jean Adams at the Rotary picnic. Dennis says he has been a fan since he was 4 years old. Must have reached the age of reason at a tender age. Another couple whose path we hadn't crossed recently along the trail is Ed and Mazie Buss. That lucky Eddie had two mighty nice girls with him, his wife and Aunt Vera. They were celebrating Aunt Vera's birthday. Never mind the age. She still has the sparkle. I drive down Kane Ave. once a week to see if that new press coop has dropped out of the sky. Sometimes I get the feeling that our dear editor, "Brenda", is leading a fight to keep the old one as a McHenry landmark. On a rainy day, farmers tised to cut weeds, mend fence or take a nap in the hay mow. With the heavy rains we have had this summer, the hay mow would be the only one to qualify. Somewhere I read where you can get catsup out of a bottle by sticking a straw down to the bottom. Sounds good, but it takes a lot of pleasure out of the old way of holding the bottle with one hand and whacking the bottom with the other hand. Veteran Cub players need a mixture of young players with speed to balance the team. Young Sox players need some veteran players to blend with inexperience. WOULDN'T YOU WON- DER-- What does a first base coach say to a runner while the first baseman stands within two feet of them? Mary Nolen (spelled with an e) grew up in a small town way down there in Illinois and recalls many things about the way of life in those days. She was telling about the time she was told to chop the head off a chicken. Not too successful. Somebody asked if they could keep chickens in McHenry in those days. Chickens? Sure -- and cows. Some even had a pig to fatten and butcher. Of course, horses were a means of transportation. Would you young uns believe? Frank Wattles had a cattle barn at the southeast corner of John and Center streets. Frank's son Howard con tinued the business and Emil Patzke was the "cowboy" with fine horse and saddle. Emil was the envy of young boys. Had a note from Pat Wirtz inviting me to attend the Rusty Nail 12 inch tour nament over the weekend. My social calendar had Saturday set aside for this event. Then the rains came and kept coming. We drove out to the park, but turned around and headed for home when conditions looked sticky. People are beginning to think that compared to his outside activities Billy Carter's regular business is just peanuts. Working a word jumble and came up with a word fennel. Never heard of it, but Mr. WebsterVbook had it listed. That man Webster was one smart fellow. Like the fellow who quit smoking more times than he could remember, I've cut down on calories just as often. The notches in my belt tell me it is time to start again. Let me tell thee, it is mighty hard for a growing boy to pass up food. Men are finally getting some recognition. Now they are naming hurricanes after them. Note to Ed Doyle wherever you are out there in the west. We had a pile of brush out in the back forty that had to be moved out front for the Monday morning pickup. Have no idea how you came into my mind. Suppose I thought if you were still living here you would have bounded right over to lend a hand. I can dream, can't I As it happened, our good neighbor, Bill Kreutzer, saw the problem and took the situation in hand. Good ol' Bill! Arnold Rauen always says to call him when we need help, but his help is in a supervisory capacity. Hoping to complete a double play after tagging the runner, Caddotte tumbled head-over-heels and all thoughts of a twin-killing were down the drain. Second Federal was one of many McHenry teams who played in last weekend's 12" tournament in Petersen Park.
