Similar clinics have been held with great success over the past three years in several California, Oregon and East Coast communities including Sacramento, San Diego, Los Angeles and Ventura counties, East San Francisco Bay, Portland and Bethlehem and Allen town, Pa. Special clinics have been held for Congressional wives in Washington, D.C. Almost 15,000 women have received training in car care techniques to date. One clinic participant said she was "appalled" at the level of ignorance about cars that she encounters among women - and many men. "We are an apathetic society", she said. "We abuse our cars. We're not doing preventive main­ tenance. We contribute to air pollution by not keeping our cars in good shape." Not only do participants come away from the clinics with new information, they also receive a valuable reminder of their new-found "liberation", something that fits neatly into a purse - a tire pressure gauge. ABOUT TOWN Last week brought the end of summer vacations for visiting grandchildren at the Low household. Nicky Billikis of Dubuque Iowa had spent the past week and a half with aunt Sue and kids in Woodstock and with grandma and grandpa Low. On Thursday of last week Linda and Bill Billikis stopped in at the Low's after a few days up in the Door county area to pick Nicky up and take him on home. They left on Friday for Dubuque and to get Nicky registered for school. He will be a big first grader this year. On Tuesday of last week, Doris Low spent the day with daughter Pam Kehoe and granddaughter Robin, in Elkhorn. They also went through the museum where they saw many unusual and in- teresting artifacts of early days agriculture. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN OF RINGWOOD The U.M.W. of the Ringwood church will have its first meeting of the Fall season at the home of Katy Christopher on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 12:30 p.m. BENOY FAMILY PICNIC Last Sunday, Paul and Althea Walkington attended the Benoy family picnic which was held at Wilbur Benoy's home in Elkhorn, Wis. Fifty-six members attended with Althea's nephew and his son traveling all the way from Boston, Mass. to join in the occasion. Others in attendance were from Chicago, Harvard, Crystal Lake and Wood­ stock. The Walkingtons also enjoyed a few days last week in southwestern Wisconsin where they traveled about seeing some of the sights. One of the most interesting places they stopped was at Cassville, where they toured the home of Governor Dewey, the first governor of the State of Wisconsin. BIRTHDAY PARTY Aug. 17 was the day that the Tonyan clan got together to celebrate Rose Tonyan's eighty-first birthday, which will fall on Sept. 5. The celebration was a double one, as it also served as a Tonyan reunion, which they hope to continue having each year. It was to be held at Petersen park, but because of the inclimate weather they all (60) gathered at the home of Clara and Jerome Tonyan. Those attending were Paul and Theresa Tonyan and family, Clarence Tonyan and family, Rita and Schyler Case, Bertha Freund and family, and Dorothy Tonyan and families. Brother Tony and Helen Williams were there, also sister, Louise Tonyan Smith: nieces Rosalie and Don Doherty, Bea and Bob Newkirk, Virginia Williams and friend. A wonderful time was had by all and they are all looking forward to getting together again next year. Today, with fewer service stations offering full-service care, the need for self- reliance is even greater. This is especially true among women motorists who have grown up being told that cars are part of a "man's world". Where can help be found? An unique approach toward helping women help themselves is being taken in McHenry county through a series of free "Car Care - Not For Men Only" clinics starting Sept. 23. A total of four clinics will be held in McHenry. Ad­ ministered by the Wood- stock-McHenry League of Women Voters, the clinics are designed principal women, but anyone 16 and older may attend. clinic lasts 2Vfe hours and accommodates unr. to 25 persons. The curriculum Includes an instructional slide show, plus "hands on" practice in such basics as operating a self-serve pump, changing a tire, jump-starting a bat­ tery, and checking tire pressure and fluid levels. Helpful tips are provided on maintenance, trouble­ shooting and safety. Each participant gets a kit of reference material to take home. Because the clinics fill up quickly, reservations are required.
