If you want to have a swan-like neck, the United States Twirling Asso ciation suggests shaking your head "no" 10 times, then nod ding "yes" 10 times. It may sound confusing, but it works. A SOW FOR FISHERMEN The effect of sun and moon on fishing success was first questioned about SO years ago by John Alden Knight, a writer and sportsman who observed that periods of high fish acti vity coincided with the relative positions of the sun and moon. His subsequent research developed the "solunar" theory, and earned him many ardent followers plus an equally devoted group of disbelievers who thought Knight was a bit looney. The solunar theory is of interest to fishermen today because much of what Knight proposed has proven to be ac curate. And although the theory is complex, Mercury outboards' fishing experts explain that it is basically a relationship between major fish activity periods and times when the sun and moon have their greatest gravitational influence upon earth. Knight found that major periods (thus feeding times) for freshwater and saltwater fish occurred daily when the sun and moon were in alignment ith the earth. This occurs twice a day, when the moon is directly overhead and again when it is directly underfoot. Called "moon up" and "moon down," these periods cycle ahead approximately SI minutes each day. Minor activity periods occur about halfway between. Other times are termed "rest" periods. Fishermen who want to study the solunar theory should consult a local library for fur ther information. There is published annually a set of solunar tables which pur port to show the daily major and minor activity periods for North America based upon the work done by John Alden Knight. C. -- Tom Watson's blazing third round at the English Open, which rocketed him so far out front no one thereafter could catch him, demonstrates con vincingly he is now golfs unquestioned superstar. The game needs a super star. Lee Trevino, who came in second, says Watson is now'the best in the world. ' Jack Nicklaus, who came in fourth, says about the same thing. The English Open was Watson's sixth major victory this year. He's obviously on his way to player of the year honors again. Yet in early April, when Watson was heavily favored at the Masters and that young Spaniard took the marbles, many speculated the day of American domi nance in pro golf was coming to an end-in the face of challenges from Japan, Spain, and elsewhere. But Watson has come on I I I I I I I I strongly since then--begin ning the very week afterward -and there isn't another golfer around, anywhere, who can equal him. Some day the foreigners may take away U.S. dominance in this sport, and in boxing and tennis (Bjorn Borg has al ready begun the process in tennis), but Watson's play in 1980 indicates that, for a few years at least, American preeminence will prevail. * * * * If you have a real friend, never let him go.
