The McHenry High School golfers ran their record to 5-0 with wins over Elgin .and Crystal Lake Central on Monday. The Warriors outshot both teams 159-165. Again led by sophomores Mike Bauml and Brad Adams with 39 scores, the Warriors coasted to an easy double win. Steve Svec carded a 40, while Mike Nank and Joe Bauml each recorded a 41. The Junior varsity defeated Elgin 184 to 207, Freshman Ken Lange led the locals with a 43. The first round of the 1980 Men's 12-Inch playoffs has been completed with John's Sport Stop-Old Bridge and Raymond's Bowl advancing to the semi-finals. Both teams won their playoffs in 'two straight' with the Sport "Stop beating Rusty Nail 9-3 and 5-4 while Raymond's Bowl won 6-4 along with a forfeit victory in the first game of the series versus Second Federal Savings of Fox Lake. Raymond's Bowl will meet Foxhole Tap in the best of three semi-final series on Monday, September 15. We extend a most cordial welcome to our new sport's editor Joel Wakitsch, a former Warrior who was quite a catcher for Warrior teams of Coach Ken Swanson. He has already made his mark with his column "The Third Half", and the survey he is taking about the future of McHenry high school should bring in some interesting comments. The Warriors of Coach Joe Schlender started the season off with a big win over Northwest Suburban power Stevenson last Friday night. The popular Warrior coach has set three goals for the season, and winning the opener was one of his goals. Although not big in size, the Warriors are a "gutty" ball club, and although they may not be of championship caliber, we can look for them to be a good representative of the school and community. They play at Grant tonight in which they will take on an old foe from days gone by, and you can bet they will give a good account of themselves. Chuck, Cuda's golf team is 5 and 0, and should battle Crystal Lake South right down to the wire for conference honors. If Mike Lawler can stand my pipe and cigars on the road trip6, he can be a par golfer. Gary Gray's girls tennis team and "Hutch's" cross country team are manned by underclassmen, but they are right in the thick of things in their respective sports. Next week the girls' volleyball and field hockey teams get into action, and Mike Shanahan's girls swimming team will do likewise. So for your fans there is alot of activity going on at the high school these days, and I'm sure that the coaches and players will appreciate your support. Two Chicago Public League schools played to a 20 to 20 tie the other day. The coaches of Julian and Simeon high schools disregarded a I.H.S.A. rule which says they must play a overtime. Both coaches friends off the field, felt that a tie was sufficient, and everybody went home happy. However, because they play only 8 games, they will not qualify for the State playoffs. According to the I.H.S.A. ties do not count, and therefore they will have played only 7 games this season, unless they can work something out within their league, which at this time does not seem a possibility. It seemed like a good gesture last Saturday afternoon, but in November there will be some hollering, if they are eligible for the playoffs, and because of their decision in early September to play to a tie, costs them a chance to qualify for the playoffs, and they are denied this chance by the state. Someone should have known better. It's crystal ball time again, so I'm going to pick the Warriors over Grant in ajreal nip and tuck game tonight. I think Warren will beat the Tigers of Central, and Stevenson to bounce back and beat Crystal Lake South. My pick for the Fox Valley: Woodstock to beat Antioch; Crown to beat St. Francis; Dundee to beat St. Edwards; Jacobs to come back and beat Wauconda; and Lake Zurich to defeat Cary Grove. Monday, the winner will go up against the survivor of the John's Sport Stop-Old Bridge clash with Doherty's the same evenings. The championship series will begin with a doubleheader on Wednesday, September 17, followed by game three on Monday, September 22. In case the finals go more than three games a fourth game is scheduled September 22 while a fifth game is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24. John's Sport Stop swept its two game series with Rusty Nail Inn as they scored five runs in the first inning and held on to win by a slim 5-4 margin. The winners had only six hits in the seven- inning game, half as many as the Nail, and managed only two baserunners after the first inning with neither runner reaching second base. Rusty Nail, on the other hand, left nine runners on the base including the tying run on thrid base in both the fifth and seventh innings. Although the Sport Stop defense looked sloppy at times two key double plays, one in the third and the other in the seventh, made up for the raggedness. In fact, the final doubleplay came with no outs and runners on first and second. For the losers the game was as frustrating as much of the entire season had gone with lack of clutch hitting with men on base and total offense only half of last year's winning combination. For the winners the close victory could mean the Sport Stop was looking too far ahead to their hopeful confrontation with un­ defeated Foxhole Tap in the finals, the team which narrowly defeated them in the 16" playoffs. Gary Gilpin led the win­ ners with a pair of singles and two RBI's. Gilpin also scored what proved to be the winning run on Roger Ludwig's base hit. Joe Dehn and Greg Freund both singled and drove in one. Larry Jones went three for three for Rusty Nail Inn. Ray Thelen and Dan Stanowski both had two hits and two runs scored with one of 'Stan's' hits a run scoring triple. Gary Schmitt singled a run and drove in one more on a sacrifice fly. Wayne Hiller Homers Twice Wayne Hiller hit two homeruns, including one over the fence and drove in three runs to help Raymond's Bowl into the semi-finals with a 6-4 win over Second Federal. Tom Spasojevich added a triple and pair of doubles in three at bats as both players ac­ counted for five of the eight Bowl hits. Second Federal Savings who had two more hits than their opponents, left nine runners on base in a game which did not seem as close as the final score indicated. John Wilkinson, playing manager knew the odds were stacked against his ball club even before the first pitch. His tenth man and leading hitter was involved in an accident less than an hour before game time. Add to that last week's forfeit loss when half the team decided to play in another league's post season playoff. Second Federal fell behind in the early going and were down 6-0 going into their half of the fifth inning. Two runs cut the Bowl lead to four while another 2-run outburst in the seventh closed the lead to two runs. But the rallies were not enough and Wilkinson is left wondering how far his club might have gone had four of his .500 hitters had been there - or even just a tenth man! John Wilkinson went two for three plus a sacrifice fly anrf three RBI's. John's brother, Mark also went two for three while Don Rode went two for four. Freund, Dehn Lead Sport Stop Doug Freund and Joe Dehn both drove in two runs, scored one run with two hits each as John's Sport Stop knocked off Rusty Nail Inn 9- 3 in game one. Roger Ludwig added two hits and two runs scored with an RBI. Dan Stanowski had three hits for the losers plus two RBI's. Mike Janik want two-for three. , Pat Wirtz 16-Inch Stars The men's 16" softball league has named its all-stars that will play against the Wauconda All-Stars at the VFW field on Sept. 16 at 8 pm. A total of 15 players were selected after being nominated by coaches at the league meeting held Sept. 9. The players include : Raymond's second baseman, Harry May stares at the ball that eluded him as John Walkington slides safely into second. Raymond Bowl advanced to the semifinals with the victory, while Second Federal sorely missed its leading hitter, Pete Blackburn, who was in an accident before the game. , STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Shaky Start For Johnsburg In sports other than football, the Johnsburg Skyhawks have not been fairing too well so far this season. Coach Connie Sanders lost a close match to Wauconda at home on Monday, 3-2 to' start the season on a sour note. Also on Monday, the cross country team never ran against Wauconda as scheduled because of the numbers difference between the two squads, the meet has been rescheduled for Sept. 18. On Tuesday, Carol Kanetzke took a hard loss on the volleyball courts against Williams Bay, 15-6 and 15-8. Montini In New Conference The Montini Mustangs, now a part of the Catholic League Conference, announced the schedule for the 1980 softball season. The boys team will be coached by Dave Joslyn while the girls squad will be directed by Steve Phillips. All home games will be played at Petersen Park this year. The conference is made up of the following schools: St. Peter and Paul, Cary; St. Catherine, Dundee; St. Johns, Johnsburg; Transfiguration, Wauconda; St. Bede, Fox Lake; and St. Thomas of Crystal Lake. A MOB SCENE-in the end zone resulted when Johnsburg half back Warren Moulis scored the first Skyhawk touchdown of the season with 1:50 left in the first quarter of last Saturday's game against Winnebago.
