(PUBLIC WELCOME) Win V Kalck Moves Warriors 90-yard Kick Return Highlights 27-7 Win Losing Close Matches Rob Kalck, senior fullback, scored three touchdowns, one on a 90-yard return of the opening kickoff to spark the Warriors of Coach Joe Schlender to a startling 27 to 7 win over the Grant Bulldogs at Fox Lake Friday night. It was the second win in a row for the Schlender crew over a Northwest Suburban foe. Kalck took the opening kickoff on his own 10 yd. line, broke to the center of the field, then cut behind perfect blocking toward the north sidelines and simply out-raced the Grant defenders for the score. Sean Haley's kick was good, and the Warriors led 7 to 0 with only 13 seconds elasped on the clock. The large Warrior crowd, by far outnumbering the hosts, stood and cheered on the fine run by the senior fullback. The Warriors lucked off to the Bulldogs, and after a first down, the Warrior defense forced a punt to the Warrior 20. Kalck and John Doessel made a first down on the 30, and then a penalty set the Warriors back, and they were forced to punt to the Bulldog 31. Vic Betancourt, Warrior defensive back, intercepted a Rosing pass and returned it to the Bulldog 15. Kalck and Doessel again with fine running made it a first down on the Bulldog 3, and then Kalck scampered off tackle for the T.D. and with Haley's kick the score was 14 to 0 with 0:31 remaining in the opening period. The second period saw both teams try and move the ball on a wet field, but the Warrior defense was too much for Les Rosing, Bulldog quarterback and his crew. Near the end of the period, the Warriors marched to the Grant 23, but four incomplete passes failed, and time ran out with the Warriors still leading 14 to 0. In the third period after the Warriors forced a Grant punt to the Bulldog 42, the Warriors were ready for a march. A Belzer to Klapperich pass was good for a first down. Doessel and D'Angelo both came up with yardage for another first down. The Warriors then fumbled and Grant recovered on their own 16. Rosing, fine Grant quarterback, got the Bulldogs rolling and they rang up four first downs in a row, and it seemed the momentum was going with the Bulldogs. However, Kalck intercepted a Rosing pass on the Warrior 31, and ended a Grant threat for the moment. The Warriors then began a march toward the goal line. With Belzer hitting Klapperich for a first down, Kalck raced to the Grant 16. A pass to D'Angelo was good to the Bulldog 5. D'Angelo carried to the 1, and then Kalck went over tackle for his third T.D. of the game. Haley's kick was good and with 9:38 remaining in the game the Warriors led 21 to 0. However, the Bulldogs came back storming. Taking the kickoff on their own 40, in five plays they were on the board, with a 33-yard perfect pass from Rosing to Schlinder for the Grant score. Rosing then kick the PAT and the Warriors led 21 to 7 with 6:12 remaining in the game. The Warriors received the on-side kickoff on the Grant 46. Doessel picked up nine yds., and after a Warrior penalty, Dave D'Angelo raced to the sideline, cut back toward the center of the field, and simply outraced a Grant defender for a beautiful 47-yard gallop into paydirt. Haley's kick was wide and the Warriors with 4:41 remaining put itaway27to7.. It was the Warriors second win of the season, which equalled last years output. Coach El Partenheimer's offensive team was quite impressive, especially the line, which gave quarterback Keith Belzer ample time to find his receivers. Brian Wilson's specialty teams, especially the punt coverage, has to be commended for thier outstanding play. The defense again was a factor, limiting Grant to 177 total yards, while picking up 336 themselves. It was truly a team effort, but one can't forget the 90-yd. opening kickoff return which set the Warriors on fire for the rest of the evening. Friday the Warriors host the "Gators" from Crystal Lake South, loser to Stevenson 13 to 12 in overtime. SCORING McHenry: Kalck (90 yd. kickoff return(, Haley (kick). Kalck (3 yd. run), Haley (kick). The first Warrior touch down came on a 40-yard pass play from Mike Love to Maiden Rudman. The PAT came on a pass from Randy 16-0 Lively to John Clewis. Jeff Lomax ran five yards for the score, with Lively passing to Jim Springer for the PAT. The defense was lead by Doug MitSzen, John Clewis, Dean Parisi and Vic Oleksijew. Golfers Still Undefeated The McHenry High School golf team ran their record to 7-0 with wins over Elgin Larkin and Woodstock the past week. The locals defeated Elgin Larkin 166-174 with Mike Bauml's 38 leading the way. Steve Svec and Brad Adams each carded 42 while Kirk Barnicle had a 44. The junior varsity lost 185- 188 with Dan Long and Randy Buenzli each scoring a 43. On Thursday, McHenry defeated Woodstock at McHenry Country Club, 156- 197. Mike Lawler with a 37 paced the Warriors after scoring a 36 last week against' Prospect. Mike Bauml carded a 38, his brother Joe had a 40 and Steve Svec a 41. Against Round Lake on Sept. 5, Johnsburg lost by three strokes, 189-186, in Round Lake. Then travelling to Hononegah on Sept. 9, they lost by a convincing 204- 176 decision before regaining their composure at home against Jacobs in a close 192- 191 loss. Pasztor said that Bob Stanell has been playing steady golf so far and carded a 40 against Jacobs. M a t c h e s a g a i n s t Wauconda and Crown were rained out so far, but Johnsburg will be busy this week, travelling to Marengo Tuesday, playing Harvard at home on Thursday , Crystal Lake South on Friday and moving on to the Crown Invitational on Saturday. Flu Hampers Skyhawks With 7:02 left in the first quarter, Grayslake quar terback Chris Schulz unloaded a fourth down pass from the 23 yard line to wide receiver, Ted Bartholomew. Leaping above the double coverage of the Johnsburg Skyhawk secondary, Bar tholomew grabbed the high toss and fell into the endzone with a 6-0 lead. From then on, it was all Grayslake, as Johnsburg dropped its season record to 1-1 with a home loss Saturday, 20-0. After a week of practice in which a number of John sburg players had the flu, Johnsburg went through three quarter backs in search of victory. Coach Bob Schmitt said that in one day of practice, he only had 18 out of his 33 boys, which caused a "rethinking of his offense." "We had only two of fensive linemen back who started last week," Schmitt said. "Plus, Valentin was shaking the effects of the flu along with Ricky Neiss and Mark Fluger. Randy Wakitsch also had to sit out another game." Scott Valentin, coming off of a strong offensive per formance one week ago, left the game twice during the first half after being sacked. On the last play of the half, Valentin stayed on the turf long after being sacked an never returned to the game during the second half. He completed only 2 of 11 passes during his stint of duty, and left the game at halftime, 14-0. Junior Dan Williams, a 6' 1", 160-pounder, took over for Valentin in the third quarter, when he completed two of only five passes and was also sacked twice. "We sure missed Ray Gomoll and Dave Kuczwara on the offensive line," Sch mitt admitted. Under Williams, the Skyhawks failed to gain a first down in the whole second half, while penalties took their toll and fumbles kept the offense stymied during their six possessions of the half. With 4:42 left in the game, Williams came off the field after his second sack with bruised ribs. Schmitt said that Williams will miss practice until Wednesday, but that the two-way player should be ready for next week's game. With third-string quar terback, Randy Wakitsch out of Uniform with the flu, Skyhawk wide receiver Rob Schmidt filled the quar terback slot for the last minutes of the game. In his brief appearance, Schmidt fumbled the first snap from center and recovered it, completed a nine-yard pass to Rick Neiss and was in tercepted on a long bomb that ended the game. Grayslake meanwhile, added salt to the wounds only once during the second half on a third-down pass to Dan Micucci for a 20-0 lead. The extra point was wide left and the game ended 20-0. The game totals told the whole story as Johnsburg made only 5 first downs compared to Grayslake with eight. On the ground, Johnsburg gained only 11 yards to 92 for Grayslake. The big difference came in the passing department, however, as Johnsburg managed only 26 yards, with five completions in 18 passes. The Rams gained 173 yards in the air. Johnsburg fumbled five times and recovered three of them, while Grayslake fumbled once to Johnsburg. Although Grayslake was called for 11 penalties for a total of 125 yards, the Skyhawks accumulated 65 yards in seven penalties. The Skyhawks will travel to Hononegah next Friday and Coach Bob Schmitt said he will have to concentrate on the Hononegah running game, especially the off- tackle run and sweeps. Joel Wakitsch McHenry Runners Have Good Week Coach Bill Hutchinson's Frosh-Soph cross country team ended up first over a field of 17 school last Saturday in the Wauconda Invitational. A total of 129 runners competed on the 1.9 mile course and McHenry finished with 53 points compared to second place team, Crystal Lake Central with 83. Brian Wright finished first among the 129 entrants with a time of 10:29. Darren Cepulis came in fourth with a 10:48 time, while Ronnie Ostrander came in tenth, Steve Carby, 14th, and Bob Sarabia, 24th. In other Frosh-Soph competition last week, McHenry beat Round Lake 27-29, but lost to Antioch 29- 28 as Rollie Ostrander trotted across with a first place finish of 10:37. Against Streamwood on Sept. 11, McHenry won easily, 22-36 as Ron Ostrander ran in second place with a 18:35 time. Steve Carby took third with a 19:20 and Eric Gaza in fourth with a 19:26. At the Maine West In vitational on Sept. 6, the freshman team finished fifth among 25 teams with Brian Wright coming in first over 200 runners. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY Against Round Lake and Antioch, the Warrior girls ran a fifth place (Mary Bazan), seventh (Dell^ Saunders) eighth (Sue Pender) ninth(Beth Lance) 14th (Barb Zuber) and 19th,(Sue Polker). McHenry tied Antioch, 28- 28. and lost to Round Lake 30-25 as Mary Bazan faired best for McHenry with a 12:39 in the 1.9 run. In the Wauconda In vitational, the Warriors finished sixth out of 18 schools as Mary Bazan again finished high for the Warriors at 12:53 in 1.9 miles. She finished 13th with that time. Montini Wins Opening Game Jumping off to an 11-run first inning against St. Peter and Paul of Gary, the Monini Mustang softball team won a four-inning contest, 19-8. Led by Joe Tonyan and Jim Koleno (four hits each) and John Norkett and Ken Schweder (three hits each), the Mustangs overwhelmed Cary. Strong defense was played by Brian Diedrich, Scott Freund, John Bolger and Mark Wray, while Steve Baldwin pitched a strong game. * Inexperience showed in the girls home opener against St. Catherine when 16 first-inning runs scored, which was enough for the win, 24-14. Montini outscored St. Catherine 10-8 in the final four innings, but it wasn't enough for the team that has only one starter from last year returning. Two homers (three-run shots) by Cindy Kinsala and a homer by Patty Johnson helped keep Montini in the ball game. Jerry Haner and Carrie Miller made outstanding catches for the losers.
