PAGK 11 - PLAIMJhALKIt FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 19,1980 • at Here Rnd There In Business Real Estate Facts REAL ESTATE FACTS By Yvonne Beer, executive officer of the McHenry County Board of Realtors While everyone is con cerned with mounting energy costs and their effect on home utility bills, there are areas homeowners overlook that can save them money the year around. For example, the McHenry County Board of Realtors suggests a close look at how much water is used and wasted around the house. Water isn't free Water conservation can save money. Here are some quick and easy water con servations tips. --If available, use those special washing machine features like suds-return cycles and wash-load-size- selection. The washing machine's operating manual will show how to take maximum advantage of all its energy saving options. Presoaking clothes in cold water allows a shorter hot water washing cycle, which saves both water and the energy needed to heat it. Use cold water cycles whenever possible. -Conserve water in the garden by covering flowers, plants, vegetables, etc., with a layer of mulch. The protective covering will help the soil retain water. - Keeping grass fairly long helps the lawn retain moisture longer too. Water the lawn only when it starts to become discolored, a brown or dull "green. If it is discolored only in spots, handwater the dry areas instead of sprinkling the whole lawn. --Leaky faucets, of course, should be fixed immediately. Sometimes, additional water is being wasted through a leak in the toilet tank. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If, without flushing the toilet, the coloring shows up in the bowl, there is a leak to repair. -Cut down on use of the garden hose as a cleaning tool around the house. Use a broom to clean off the sidewalk or driveway. Use a bucket of warm soapy water to wash the car, and use the hose only for a final rinse, use the hose sparingly to wash down the house. Rainwater is just as ef fective -- and considerably cheaper. --Limited and proper use of the garbage disposal reduces energy consumption significantly. Use cold water to operate the disposal and make sure all table scraps -- have been included before running it No need to run it more than once after a meal. -Dishwashers should be used sparingly Try to run them at night, in off-peak utility hours, and try to save all the day's dishes for one load. If dishes are washed by hand, turn off the tap in between rinsing and washing to conserve this valuable resouiye \ • . - Keep a pitcher of ice water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap to obtain cold water for drinks. One to two gallons of water can be wasted waiting for it to get cold enough. -Install a "low-flow" nozzel in the shower. It will reduce the amount of hot water used but not the en joyment of the shower. Cut back on time spent in the shower, too. These energy - and water savings tips are offered by the McHenry County Board of Realtors. Clip and save them. Th6y will save you money. NEGOTIATE CONTRACTS G e n e r a l T e l e p h o n e company of Illinois and Local 41 and 702 of the In ternational Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) have begun negotiations for a new contract. The current contract is scheduled to expire at midnight Oct. 25. at the billing period on the stub of the September bill. If * the period ends Sept. 15 or later, that ending date marks the beginning of the first month of lower, non- summer rate billing. For example, if the date is Sept. 24, the bills for the periods ending on or about the 24th of the next eight months will be billed at the lower non- summer rate. If it ends before Sept. 15, non-summer billing months will begin on a p p r o x i m a t e l y t h e corresponding day in Oc tober. For example, if it ends on September 8, non- summer billing will begin on or about Oct. 8. For the average residential customer, the rates will balance out, and the total annual cost should be the same as under a rate structure with a level year- round charge. Illinois knights of Columbus will hold their eleventh annual statewide fund raising effort on behalf of the mentally retarded young people the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 1. The Knights have set a figure of $800,000 as their target for the two-day drive, about 7 percent greater than they raised in last year's campaign. In excess of $100,000 has been donated by the Knights to the Illinois Special Olympics, Inc. to help un derwrite their summer and winter games. Since the campaign was begun in 1970, gross receipts from the K. of C. Mentally Retarded program are in excess of $5,530 million. Under the terms of the Knights' project, 10 percent of the gross collected each year is placed in a K. of C. State fund which is used to provide support for major mentally retarded projects. Disclose Dangers In Solar Pool Covers The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued a warning against swimming in pools partially covered with solar pool covers. "Following reports from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety commission, (CPSC) of several deaths connected to the use of pool covers," said William L. Kempiners, director of the state health department, "consumers are advised never to swim in pools which are partially covered by the solar pool covers." None of the deaths occurred in Illinois. CONTEST WINNER Simon Sullivan, 2610 Myang avenue, McHenry, recently won a certificate in the eighth annual U-Haul U- Color contest. Under a self- storage theme, the contest was open to children of U- Haul dealers, company employees and friends. Entrants were asked to color a cartoon, then draw or wri te what they'd put in a self- storage room. Kempiners described a solar pool cover as a buoyant, translucent plastic cover designed to be cut to fit the shape of an individual swimming pool. It is placed flat upon the surface of the pool water to heat the water through passive solar energy from the sun. "Swimmers who swim under part of a solar pool cover risk surfacing into the device and being unable to breathe," Kempiners said. "In attempting to find air, it is possible that swimmers might become disoriented and unintentionally swim further under the pool cover." If consumers wish to provide additional in formation to CPSC on swimming pool solar covers and th£ir potential danger, they may call the toll-free Hotline at 800-638-8326. 5/ 4 GREAT CABOf'S PRODUCTS SAVE $400 To bring out the best in wood. ; ed efle<» depending on the iotve Cabot % T'ontpa'enl • n» a-r t'oobi* free ne«e- i k pee o' bitter, otlu't el'ent -etultt on oil »ype» o* r o- »ood Idea* 'or th>nglei "9 OapbOQ'dt and panel available 3 78 piea».nq PER GAL. Hope Methodist church will be on hand this Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 until 5 to work along with the McHenry County Defenders in the southeast corner of the Market Place parking lot as people bring their recyclable material to the regular third-Saturday- of-every-month recycling drive. Bundledt newspapers, clean glass bottles and jars, clean and flattened steel c a n s , a l l - a l u m i n u m products, and used motor oil in securely closed jugs are all happily accepted at the recycling drive. Due to the slowdown in the building industry, there is no market for magazines, cardboard and advertising mail. This "mixed paper" is used mainly in the manufacture of construction material such as roofing shingles and tar paper. Warehouses seem to be full to capacity and no company at present is interested in receiving the mixed papers, even at no cost to them. Families involved in recycling are asked to dispose of their mixed papers along with their plastic and other non- recyclable trash. At present, the McHenry County Defenders recycling trailer still has in it the mixed papers brought in since July. Anyone having questions regarding recycling or with a large quantity of material to be pickedaip are asked to call RECOGNIZE SERVICE--Don Peasley.
