Mother's Medicine, Pub. by Wm. Morrow, N.Y.) Toilet training is one of the biggies in child develop ment and independence, like the first work, the first tooth, and the first step. A child is able to control his bowel movements well before he is able to control his urination, usually around twenty-four to twenty-eight months. This is good news for the mother, who will probably be much less distraught over a wet diaper than a soiled one. There is no set time when toilet training should be started, although most mothers begin between one and two years. Many chil dren are not ready to be trained until well into the second year. Children with older siblings usually want to try earlier to be like older brother or sis. The key to toilet training is patience. Bribing, coer cion, and pressure do no good. When the child is ready, he will learn of his own volition. The dirty diapers may all look alike, but each individ ual is different. Up to the point when the child begins to train himself, it is a hit- and-miss deal in which the observant mother rushes the straining, grimacing, grunt ing, red-face, hopping child to the john. Success is ^ matter of catch-as-catch-can at the right point in time, and putting him quickly on the toidy seat. One of the prob lems many mothers have, especially new ones, is that they start toilet training be fore the child is able to con trol himself. This only results in failure for both mother and child. Doctor Talk By Dr. Harold B. Ligon Concluding this series of columns about the gastro intestinal tract, it's impor tant to remember that it's vital to heal an ulcer as quickly as possible. If ulcers are allowed to become chronic, they can cause di gestive problems throughout one's lifetime. Some problems which develop are permanent scar ring, large areas of contrac tion of the stomach lining and even obstruction of the intestinal tract at the ulcer ous area./ , This can lead to the nec essity of surgery, which means removal of a major part of the stomach and duo denum. And this operation doesn't always cure the con dition. Another complication of a delay in healing is often a perforation, which can lead to serious leakage of gastric juices into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis, which can be fatal. Perfora tion is a hole in the lining of the stomach, through which gastric juices leak. Perforation can take place on any surface of the stomach, and often a perfora tion will extend into another organ, such as the pancreas, which lies directly behind the stomach. This can cause pancreatitus, which is in it self a severe illness. Still another complication Df a continued chronic ulcer is hemorrhage, which of course is bleeding into the gastro-intestinal tract. If an early cure had been effected, hemorrhage would not have occurred. U. S. Wetlands Being Depleted National Geographic News Service WASHINGTON, D. C. - Bulging in some spots and shrinking in others, its coast line gives America its famil iar shape. More than half the people 'ive around the edges of the country. Nine of the 10 larg est metropolitan areas are coastal. By 1990 an esti mated 75 percent of the population will live in the coastal region--in counties that lie within 50 miles of the shore. Growing at a faster rate than the rest of the country, the coasts are being stretch ed to capacity by enormous pressures of population and development. Defending precious coastal resources against these forces is con sidered the next environ mental battleground. There are about 85,000 miles of U.S. shoreline, vary ing from the steep rocky cliffs of the Pacific Northwest to the grassy dunes of North Carolina's Outer Banks. Al though it is attached to Canada at the north and Mexico on the south, the country's border is mostly coastline.
