Wonder Lake Anne Sowers 653-9549. Snowmobile Club Offers Youth Classes Since there seems to be a little nip in the air with Fall breezes blowing, the Lakers Snowmobile club is arranging a certification class for young snowmobilers. It will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Wonder Lake Inn. There is an extensive day planned that will begin at 9 a.m. and be concluded at 5:30 p.m. A small registration fee is required which not only covers the full day course, but also lunch. Anyone 12-16 years old may take the class, but it will be on a first come first serve basis, since it would be hard to accommodate too many at one time. You must register before the class day by calling 653- 4396. NATIVITY LUTHERAN CHURCH There will be a meeting of the LCW tonight, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. A "Kitchen Shower;; is being planned for the evening. Many of the members discussed attending a special meeting at the Harvard Moose hall on Monday, Oct. 6, which would deal with the closing of the Senior Citizen Council office in Woodstock and also the disbanding of the Meet and Eat centers, which included Wonder Lake. Desserts, provided by Marie Barthuly and Marge Johnson, were enjoyed by the members, after which, their favorite card games were played. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 15, at which time a potluck luncheon will take place. INDUCTEDINTO NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY It was a very exciting day, not only for Denise Graff, but for her parents A1 and Rita Graff, when she received a letter saying she would be inducted into the National Honor Society of Woodstock high school where she is a senior. Rita says, "Happiness is having a daughter like Denise. We are all so proud of her." LONESOME TRIP Since my husband is beginning to threaten that the pontoon boat has to come out of the water, I decided to take one last trip around the Lake when the sun was shining and the ther mometer read 78 (that was right in the sun though!) Except for a family of ducks and two lonely looking fishermen sitting on a pier, I was the only one out on the lake. Quite a difference from a busy day in the middle of July. No beginning skiers falling because they tried to proudly wave or advanced skiers coming close to the boat mischieviously splashing and sending the pontoon tilting from one side to the other caught in their wake. Most of the swinriming buoys are removed, as are piers from the homes along the lake. Gone are the tanned little bodies diving off the rafts. I certainly didn't have to worry about anyone cutting across in front of me and the scenery was gorgeous. The trees have begun to take on gold and red tones and the sun glistening on the calm water was very peaceful. I'm never ready to ex change the pontoon for the snowmobile, but at least I had one more ride before I had to call it quits for the season. The board decided the heritage of McHenry FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 16, 1930) James Fay, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fay, of this city, and Miss Laura Mead, daughter of Mrs. Blanche Mead of Crystal Lake, were married at the home of the former's sister, Mrs. Helen Oder, in Chicago. The Boy Scouts were on what we call a boat hike. All the boys met down at Karls' pier and some of the fellows who can get boats will bring them to the pier. Each Scout has a lunch that requires little or no cooking. The silver anniversary of McHenry Chapter, No. 547, Order of the Eastern Star, was celebrated at a special meeting Oct. 11, with about 100 members and visitors present to enjoy the evening. The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion in silver and white with winter bouquets of silver carrying out the color schemes. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 17, 1940) A total of 576 young men, between the ages of 21 and 35 were registered at the McHenry Community high school, according to a report by Supt. C.H. Duker. Fifty- two of these registrants gave their address as being outside of McHenry county. A staff of thirty-one teachers from the public schools in McHenry and vicinity, under the supervision of Mr. Duker, took care of the registration work. Miss Helen Stevens and M L. Schoenholtz were directly in charge of the registration in the gymnasium. Thomas P. Bolger, McHenry druggist, who is an ex-service man and past commander of the 11th Legion district, was named a member of the McHenry board number one of the selective service. Misses Eleanor Kinsala and Bertha Schiessle returned the first of the week after enjoying a drive through Illinois - and Missouri. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of October 13, 1955) The McHenry Community high school board of education has met each week for the past five weeks to discuss details concerning the proposed addition to the high school. The general design of the building was established several weeks definitely on the sise of the proposed bond issue. They feel that it will be impossible to build an adequate sized addition needed to house pupils for less than $1,250,000. With this money they plan to double the size of the building and build a swimming pool. There has been excitement throughout the week at M.C.H.S. where every student has entered into the spirit of homecoming which will be held Oct. 14. Zion- Benton's team will invade the local gridiron for the big game. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 7, 1970) Vaughn Jones and Miss Ethel Jones accepted a plaque from William J. Bolger in honor of their sister, the late Gretta Goodell, for her unique contribution to the McHenry library. The library board, of which Mr. Bolger is president, has named the original room in the library the Gretta Goodell room in memory of the gracious lady who worked tirelessly for many years to establish a library which has continued to grow and prosper. The wall plaque in the shape of an open book has, been in scribed "Gretta Goodell room in memory of one of the founders of the library". This plaque will be placed in this room as a reminder of residents. After two bomb threats at East campus on successive dSys, the student body learned that effective im- mediately all time lost from such incidents will be made up either after school hours or at a predetermined time. A fired-up and determined defensive-minded McHenry Warrior football team beat highly regarded Zion in one of the most exciting football games ever witnessed at McCracken Field by a score of 16-13. The contest was every bit as close as the score, as the ball changed hands six times in the final six minutes.
