STAFF PHOTOS-JOEL WAKITSCH Johnsburg Runs To 14-7 Win Prep Round-up Homecoming After a dismal running attack netted Johnsburg negative yardage in last weeks homecoming loss, the Skyhawks stuck with the running game last Saturday as they stepped on Beioit Catholic. 14-7. Gaining a total of 203 yards on the ground and only 15 yards in the air, coach Bob Schtnitt's troupe initiated a deadly draw play and got away with a few mistakes while running their conference record to 1-2 and overall record to 2-3. Things moved along slowly until late in the first quarter, when Johnsburg ran the ball from their own 42 down to the Beioit Catholic eight yard line During the drive, Warren Moulis carried three times for 20 yards. Doug Wick man gained 14 yards in four carries and Alex Bingman then fumbled on the Beioit eight yard line into the hands of Tom Morgan of the opponents Beioit took over on its own eight, moved only five yards and punted against a brisk wind to the 33 yard line. With good field position. Alex Bingman ran for one yard and Scott Valentin hit Rick Neiss for six yards Doug Wickman took the third down carry to the 24 yard line, short of the first down by one yard. Johnsburg then sent Wickman to get the yard on fourth down, but he was stacked up at the line as the first quarter ended with no score. Beioit took over, but was forced to punt from the 24. Rick Neiss returned the long boot 15 yards to the 40 of Beioit. Again with good position, Johnsburg was forced to punt after three fruitless plays and the ball exchanged hands twice before Beioit scored late in the second quarter. Starting from its 34 yard line with 3 20 left in the half, Beioit quarterback Cale Nlauel utilized halfback Bill Borgerding out of the backfiel on three out of four plays which netted 35 yards to the Johnsburg 30 yard line. A personal foul call against the Skyhawks put the ball on the 15 to give Beioit its third first down of the possession. On first down, halfback Jerry McNabb gained four yards on a sweep and one incomplete pass later. Nlauel dumped a short delay pass over the middle to Pat Bennett out of the backfield. He caught the Johnsburg defense napping and hustled down to the two yard line With first and goal from the two, fullback Pat Bennett at 5' 11" and 220 pounds was asked to take the mail twice in a row, but the Johnsburg line held tough and allowed only one yard on the big fullback's two carries. On third down at the one, Mauel again looked for Bennett as he turned to his right. Bennett was nowhere to be found, however, and Mauel was forced to scramble to his right to score the games first touchdown on good second effort on the broken play The extra point was good and with 38 seconds left in the half, the score stood at Beioit Catholic 7. Johnsburg 0. The half ended at 7-0. Multi-purpo6« man Rick Neiss took the opening kickoff of the second half to the Johnsburg 34 to start a controversial drive to start the second half. During the drive, the Skyhawks used the most effective offensive weapon of the day. the draw play. Twice on second down and six situations. Johnsburg runners took the draw for a total of 20 yards Doug Wickman moved eight yards and Alex Bingman later moved 12 yards on the same play to make first downs "We've always had the draw play in our offensive plan, but it just wasn't working for us." Coach Bob Schmitt said. "Beioit w as committed to stop our pass, so their five-man line stayed to the outside to rush Valentin It Mfcpt the middle wide open for the draw A face mask penalty mov ed the ball to the Beioit 12 yard line during the drive Warren Moulis and Pete Barroso both ran for one yard apiece before Valentin tossed one over the head of Rick Neiss in the end zone on third down On fourth down and eight yards to go at the ten yard line, coach Schmitt made a controversial decision to go for the touchdown instead of the field goal while trailing. 7-0. The fourth down pass to Steve Sisk along the left sideline was incomplete and Beioit took over at the 10. Schmitt reasoned that since hi§ offense had been "so sporadic." he felt Johnsburg needed a touchdown at that point He also pointed out that if the touchdown failed it would leave Beioit deep in its own territory. i knew both of my kickers could have made the field goal," Save now during our pre-season LENNOX heating sale Coll today for an estimate ' yj A ALTHOFF ifl INDUSTRIES 809 N. FRONT STREET McHENRY 815-385-5700 Schmitt said. "But we've been working so hard on our offense the past week that I thought I'd give it a whirl. " Schmitt's strategy later paid off, however, as Beioit moved only three yards and was forced to punt against the wind at the 13. The short kick was taken at the Beioit 34 with 5:12 left in the third quarter Valentin ran for two yards on first down, but Johnsburg caught a break on a defensive interference call on second down. Rick Neiss dropped the pass, but was nudged by the Beioit defensive back and the ball moved to the 21 yard line. The draw play then proved effective again, but this time on first down as Alex Bingman took the ball 21 yards down the left side for the first Johnsburg touchdown. Johnsburg then gambled on a two-point conversion as Pat Rorig steamroDed his way over end to give Johnsburg a 8-7 lead at 4:11 of the period. In the fourth quarter, Johnsburg averted disaster after Alex Bingman fumbled at the Beioit 27 yard line and forced the Johnsburg defense to hold off the Beioit offense. Beioit moved the ball down to the ten, but were forced to try for a 20 yard field goal The boot was far enough but swayed just left of the goal post, Johnsburg took over at the 20. Tbe charged up Skyhawks then kept the ball for four minutes and 22 seconds while setting up a three-yard touchdown run by Warren Moulis. The extra point kick by Rick Neiss was low and the score read 14-7 with 1:01 remaining in the game. Rob Schmidt's kick started Beioit off at its own 46 and after two passes moved the ball to Johnsburg 20, a motion penalty moved the ball back to the 46 of Johnsburg. On second down and eight, Mauel hit Pat Bennett five yards over the Kn» Bennett then Late railed the ball perfectly to Jerry McNabb cutting down the right sideline on the "trick play." McNabb needed to outrun only one Skyhawk on his way to pay dirt, but defensive back Dave Brenner saved the game as be cut uidirv McNabb's feet and sent him out of bounds at the 33 yard line. With 19 seconds left in the game, Mauel tried the same trick play, but the pass was incomplete. Two more futile passes and' a "flea flicker" later, the Johnsburg Skyhawks sacked Mauel behind the line to preserve the victory. For the victors. Alex Bingman tallied 93 yards in 11 carries to lead the locals, while Warren Moulis gained 51 yards on 11 carries.
