She toured the country with a professional barnstorming baseball team -- composed only of men -- and played only against men. She could throw a ball almost 300 feet on a straight line. EARL WALSH' • i So I Hear Even your best friends won't tell you. One morning last week when the grass was very wet I rolled up my pant legs before walking out to the back forty. Forgot to roll 'em down. Down town -- into the Plaindealer office -- all around the town. It wasn't until I called on cousins Mary and Louise and sat down for a visit that I noticed the roll up. It made me think of a time some years ago while I waited for a train at the Crystal lake platform, dressed up in a new suit for a trip to the big city. Seemed like everybody on the platform was casting looks in my direction. It had to be the new suit they were admiring: It wasn't 'til I boarded the train that the mystery cleared. One pant leg was caught on a garter. Yep. Men wore garters in those days. Alan Bannister, who couldn't cut the mustard with the White Sox, is now playing right field for the Cleveland Indians after a whirl at second base. Everybody acknowledged Bannister could hit the ball, but a lame arm kept him out of a regular job. But, playing right field! That is where a manager wants the strongest arm. It doesn't add up. One gal was telling about the signals at Green and Elm Sts. When WALK flashed, she started to cross the street. In the middle of her third step it changes to DON'T WALK. That's tricky. Cash a check at a bank and they give 20 and 10 dollar bills. Must be the 5s are going out of style. The Homecoming football game really was interesting in spite of the loss to the Cary Grove Trojans. There were thrills, spills and chills. The Trojans are a good football team, make no mistake about it. Their line was too strong for us and they had some ball handlers any coach would like to see on ljis side. They, might be called the B-B Boys as quarterback Britt passed to Barry. They were deadly. When the Trojans needed yardage, Neal Britt was one hard hombre to bring down. On our side that little ball of dynamite, Dave D'Angelo, again thrilled the crowd. Vic Betancourt was one who showed he can leg it with a football under his arm. His one interception and long run brought life to the McHenry side of the field. Rob Kalck, a letterman, was a real workhorse for the Warriors. A strong runner is Kalck. Quarterback Keith Belzer can pass the ball, but needs more protection. There are other Warriors worthy of mention, but you can get more detailed descriptions in Dick (The People Choice) Rabbitt's report on the game. He wasn't the People Choice with the likes o' Tom Parsley who wanted to know where the peanuts were. I had to tell him that Dick had phoned me before the first home game to invite me to the press coop providing I didn't bring any food. Tom and some of the others in the coop agreed Dick was looking out for his own waist line without regard to their pangs of hunger. Standing up a couple of times to look at the large crowd below the box, I looked hard to see if "Curly" Rogers was there. He must have had his noggin covered with a stocking cap or I couldn't have missed him. The band and Pom Pon girls put on a great show between halves. They SHAMROCK CLEANERS *1 DOLLAR COUPON SPECIAL! RTE. 120 - McHENRY • 385-1944 deserve a pat on the back; / """ It is always nice to have the popular Tom Parsely come a-callin'. This time he had to bring the sad news that Mel Stuessy had passed away. Aside from Mel's many contributions to the City of Woodstock, we knew him best as a Hall of Famer in the world of McHenry County sports. Mel was an outstanding football player in high school, college and pro ranks. He was also a rough one to meet on the basketball floor. I took some of those bumps. F o r e g o i n g s a l a r y , "Stuess" c0|jbhed Wood stock's St. Mary's teams. Most of his boys were small and reserves were few. Scrappy and exciting they were. Many players will well remember Mel as a no- nonsence referee. He kept games under control. As Bill Carrol remarked at the wake, "His kind don't come along very often". Stuessy's wife, Ruth, must hold a record of watching the most basketball games of anybody in Northern Illinois. She probably would have made a good coach. So -- a great sports figure has gone to this eternal reward. His name goes down in history and won't be forgotten. It was Anniversary Night at Bimbo's Sunday. Thirty years ago, Papa and Mama Pieroni came to McHenry and opened what was proved through the years a very popular place to eat and quench your thirst. , The Bimbo Boys, Ray. Eddie and Junior have carried on the fine tradition established. New faces appear each year, but like 01 'man Kiver- - Bimbo's just keeps rolling along. Steve Svec and Brad Adams bettered Bauml's round, however, with a 39 and a 38 respectively. At 14-1, the golfers will travel to Waukegan for district play on Thursday.
