EARL WALSH1 So I Hear Marie reports that Petie Schaefer is one happy fellow, riding on cloud 9 since the baseball season ended. Petie has a standing bet each yen with. Dennis Conway, based on whether the White Sox or Cubs finish with the most wins. The Sox are 6-up for 1960. Dear Earl: You started something with your story on wood burning stoves -- as you can see the news has spread as far south as Oak Park. Stories like that are not too good for portly men like myself -- I gained eight pounds just thinking about the aroma of fried potatoes cooked on one of those stoves coming from the kitchen of Rose Freund -- but I liked every bit. » Regards, Biff Meyer Hi Biff: You always come through when I need help. Glad your Oak Park paper has taken up wood burning stoves as swn in your clipping. Had no idea you are old enough to remember all those old yarns. You must be getting along in years! How well I remember that stove in the Rose Freund kitchen. She allowed me to put my feet up on the railing on cold winter nights as I waited for her daughter to get dolled up on date nights. Why don't you move back to the country and get a franchise for wood burners? You could make your second fortune. Shouldn't mention the homemade bread that came out of the Rose Freund oven. Am sure it put eight pounds on my frame. Keep reading and writing, S.I.H. Most baseball fans in our range of conversation wanted Montreal to win their division in the National League. In the West, Houston's do or-die playoff game with the Dodgers pleased a flock of fans. It isn't fair to pin a poor sports tag on all Dodgers fans. It is fair to pin worse names on those bleacher nitwits who threw objects at the Houston outfielders. Sometimes you see a manager pull this team off the field. This time the umpires took the bull by the horns and called the Houston team to their dugout as a warning was given as to the possibility of the game being forefeited. It really bothers me to see poor sportsmanship displayed in any athletic event. The umpires also deserve credit for preventing a real doonybrook in that playoff game when Joe Ferguson gave Alan Ashby the knee when he was on the ground. Right then I wanted to see Ferguson get the boot in stead of the knee -- booted out of the game. After watching the first half of the Bears-Tampa Bay game Monday night, it seemed like a good idea to turn the knob. For some reason, I stayed with the game and saw the Bears wake up in the last half to win going away. Play after play they called on Walter Payton to carry the ball. They need another Comment On Sports IMflMl* * * " By Pete Fritcbie WASHINGTON, D. C. - There have been a number of flops in the American League in 1980 worthy of mention. Both Texas and California were thought to be solid con tenders in the American League West. Neither was. Detroit respectable in the American East. But the Tigers aren't doing as good under Sparky, this year and last, as they did under Les Moss in the short time he was given the helm in 1979. How can the team win when such players as Ron Leflore, Jason Thompson, Rusty Staub, Jim Slaton, etc., stray from the fold? The Tigers have now been a young team, coming, for six years. The Milwaukee Brewers, also in the A.L. East, were supposed to be pennant con tenders in 1980 They have failed badly, but in fairness, they lost their manager to a heart attack early in the year. Meanwhile Billy Martin showed once again what a firebrand manager can do-at Oakland. The National League, contrary to the scene in the American, has been pretty much up to expectations. Montreal, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have been tough in the eastern division and Los Angeles, Houston and Cincinnati have been tough in the west-as forecast. Houston has held up sur prisingly well without J.R. Richards. The big surprise in the National is Atlanta, which suddenly has become a winning team. Can it be? by Bob Brewster HOMING INSTINCT Most anglers who regularly fish a particular body of water have had the experience of catching a fish time and again from almost the same place. Some anglers may wonder whether a released fish returns to its original home. It seems that some southwest fisheries biologists were samp ling a lake to determine the mix of rough and game fish, and the size and age of fish living in the lake. In the process of taking a sample, they trapped some fish and moved them a considerable distance away where they were placed in a holding pen to be studied later. One of the fish was a large bluegill that was tagged and kept for examination. Somehow, the bluegill es caped from the holding pen. Its absence was noted by the biolo gists when they cleared the pen of all fish. Later, as more fish were being caught for a second phase of the survey, the previously tagged bluegill turned up in the capture net in exactly the same place it had been taken the first time. Evidently, after escaping from the holding pen, the free- dom-seeking bluegill went di rectly back to its home and took up its former position. The distance traveled was Editor's Quote Book Perfection of means and confusion of goals seem, in my opinion, to characterize our age. Albert Einstein SHAMROCK CLEANERS >1 DOLLAR COUPON SPECIAL! Although this isn't conclu sive proof that fish possess a homing instinct, it does rein force the belief by many anglers who practice "catch-and- release" that a fish will return to exactly the same log, rock or other underwater debris from which it was first taken. ball carrier. Of course, Walter wanted those 100 yards and more. There ought to be a law. Why do people carry on long conversations at the head of a long line at wakes or receptions? My idea is to post a person at the head of the line with a stop watch. Allow each person a limited time. SUDDEN THOUGHT: Before all these fancy concoctions, when a man or a horse was cut on barbed wire, they smeared a gob of axle grease on the wound. Great healing power. Have been reminded of ommission of comments on the new press box at Mc- Cracken Field. The size is the same. New lumber. Lined inside, window now shields oc cupants from the elements. A steep stairway replaces the trap door. Everybody noted the steepness. For my part, I am happy to be rid of the trap door entry. All in all it is an improvement. If school officials ever decide to enlarge the coop, they might take a look at some of the structures in other cities. One person reported their press box and stands being paid for through a Health-Safety grant. WAITING IN A MEDICAL OFFICE (DENTIST OF FICES CAN BE INCLUDED) Maybe you have a 2 o'clock appointment -~ You sit down and pick up an old magazine -- A half hour passes and you get up and stretch -- Back to another magazine -- You look at your watch and check it with the office clock -- You get up again and get a swig of water -- Sit down and read some more -- Wonder if those people who came in after I did are taking my turn -~ Maybe they forgot I am here -- How many people had appointments for the same hour? -- One time I fell asleep -- Nurse awakened me -- Other people are amused -- Wonder if I gnored ~ Do you know how base ball got it's name? At one time bases were marked by stakes, but these frequently caused injuries. They were replaced first by stones, later by sand-filled sacks. Soon the sacks were identi fied as "bases," and the game of "baseball" was so named. m 0 The one millionth run scored in the history of major league baseball was recorded on May 4, 1975 when Houston Astro's Bob Watson crossed homeplate.
