Along with the Proper Nutrition Is Vital To Health Care Proper nutrition can be as vital to effective health care as bandages or disease- fighting drugs. The medical dietitian provides nutritional care to maintain good health or combat illness, treating patients of all ages. "The medical dietitian understands the nutritional process from cup to lip and through the body, where the food is broken down into different forms and chemicals," said Savitri Kamath, Ph.D., head of the Department of Nutritiorf and M e d i c a l D i e t e t i c s , University of Illinois at the Medical Center, Chicago. The department, part of the College of Associated. Health Professions, offers a coordinated undergraduate program in medical dietetics emphasizing clinical work. Its curriculum covers the junior and senior years and is offered at either the Medical Center or Urbana- C h a m p a i g n c a m p u s . Students may obtain their first two years of college credit at any accredited junior college or university. Other medical dietetics programs require two years of study followed by a one- year clinical internship. However, the University of Illinois department coor dinates clinical experience within the two years of classroom work, making an internship unnecessary. A medical dietitian must be knowledgeable in nutrition, biology, and physiology to understand how the body uses different foods to meet its nutritional needs. They must be familiar with disease processes because illness affects the body's demand for fuel and nutrients. Sociology, psychology, economics and com munication courses are other prerequisites for students wishing to become medical dietitians, Kamath said. Good communication skills are necessary because the medical dietitian works as part of a health team with p h y s i c i a n s , n u r s e s a n d others. " I n t e r v i e w i n g a n d counseling skills are im portant. In talking to patients, the dietitian must learn their food habits, economic resources and any cultural influences upon their diets," the department head explained. "It is not practical to plan a medically-sound diet if the patient can't afford to follow it or won't follow it because he doesn't like the foods." Medieal dietitians use four basic steps in patient care. F i r s t , t h e y a s s e s s t h e patient's needs, considering p h y s i c a l c o n d i t i o n , m e d i c a t i o n s t a k e n , resources and food habits. The dietitian then plans and implements the new nutritional care program and later evaluates the results. Job opportunities are promising for registered dietitians who wish to work in patient care. Many of the department's graduates find employment with hospitals, clinics or health agencies t h a t e x t e n d n u t r i t i o n a l services to the community and industry. The department also has a master's level program; its graduates may become educators in an academic or clinical setting. "The role of the medical dietitian is expanding as nutrition becomes more important in health care," Kamath said.
