PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15,1980 Plaindealer I.C. Crushes Marian Area homecoming football encounters have proven rather unfruitful in 1980, and Marian Central kept the dismal reality alive last Saturday, falling to Im maculate Conception, 26-2 at Marian The Hurricane's top runner, T. J. Baumann was held to a skimpy 34 yards in 15 carries and quarterbacks Don Rickert and Tim Sherwood combined to complete only three out of eight passes for a total of 14 yards in the disaster Immaculate Conception (I. C.) dominated during the whole game as a healthy wind and temperatures in the 30's kept the ball out of the air most of the afternoon I. C. gained only eight first downs in the game, but they scored touchdowns on runs of 25,11 and three yards to go along with a 35-yard gallop to paydirt by Adam Simoncelli after an in terception They started the first scoring drive at the 9:01 mark of the second period, keeping the ball for three minutes and covering 60 yards in eight plays. The drive was highlighted by a 20-yard run by halfback Mike Hennessy to the Marian seven yard line. A penalty put the ball back to the 11 before fullback Frank Cimino ran 11 yards along the left sideline for the score. The extra point attempt was partially blocked, but still made it through to give I. C. a 7-0 lead. After the next Hurricane possession netted only five yards, Scott Spengel punted to the Marian 47, where I.C. started its second drive. A 30-yard pass to senior John Baumgartner down to the three yard line set up a three-yard off tackle run by Cimino as he scored his second touchdown of the day. I.C. passed for the extra points, but it was incomplete and Marian took over with 3:22 left in the half trailing 13-0. Starting from their own 30, quarterback Don Rickert ran three yards and Justin Travers nudged ahead for one yard before an illegal procedure call left third down and 11. Rickert was intercepted at the 35 by Simoncelli, who ran it along the left sideline for the touchdown. The PAT put the score at 20-0 as the half ended that way. A holding call kept Marian befuddled in its first possession of the second half, and I.C. wasted no time adding salt to the wounds as they travelled 60 yards in seven plays to make the score 26-0. Tom McCorey ran 25 yards on a reverse for the score and the extra point was wide. Marian's defense scored the only Hurricane points on a fourth quarter safety. Scott Spengel boomed a 56 yard punt to the four yard line as I.C. could not dig its way out of the hole. They lost two yards on first down, were held there on the second down run and Hennessy was caught in the endzone on third down for the two points The loss dropped Marian to 0-4 in the West Suburban Catholic Conference and 0-6 overall, while I.C. moved its record to 3-1 in the same conference and 5-1 overall. Joel Wakitsch Missed Chances In Overtime Loss Two missed chances in overtime kept the Johnsburg Skyhawks from beating undefeated North Boone at Poplar Grove last Friday evening, as Johnsburg dropped its conference mark to 1-3 in a 12-6 heartbreaker. Tied after regulation play at 6-6, the Skyhawks won the toss and had four downs to score from the ten yard line. On first down, Johnsburg ran up the gut for one yard and Scott Valentin threw incomplete on second down before a disasterous third-down play. Using a double slot manuveur, Coach Bob Schmitt explained that the two inside receivers were to criss-cross and the outsia^man, Randy Wakitsch was to cut across the middle in the end zone. The play worked to perfection, but Wakitsch dropped the nine-yard pass in the end zone and Johnsburg was forced to try for the fourth-down field goal. "I just missed the pass," Wakitsch explained later. "I guess I'm the goat." Wakitsch was not the only one to blame, however, as the Skyhawks also missed the 23-yard field goal as Rick Neiss booted it low. North Boone took over on the ten and gave the ball to Mark Johnson three times in a row. The last time proved fatal as Johnson dove straight ahead for a three-yard scoring play to win the game for North Boone, 12-6. All the scoring in regulation time took place in the fourth quarter as Mark Johnson drew first blood on a four-yard scamper at the 9:22 mark. The conversion failed. Then, with 1:45 left in the game, Johnsburg recovered a fumble at the North Boone 45. Valentin hit Wakitsch for a 26- yard gain at the 10 yard line. Valentin then rolled to his right on a keeper and ran 10 yards for the score that tied the score at six. The conversion kick failed and the contest went into overtime. Earlier, in the first quarter, Johnsburg had two golden opportunities thwarted as Warren Moulis lost a fumble on the one yard line and Valentin later passed a beautiful 30-yard bomb to Rick Neiss in the end zone only to have it called back because of a Skyhawk motion penalty. The stats were similar on both sides, as Johnsburg racked up 158 total yards and North Boone picked up 238 yards, all on the ground. Valentin was 7 of 19 for 94 yards passing, with six completions coming in the first half. "The wind picked up in the second half and Scott (Valentin) completed only one of ten passes during that time," Schmitt noted. Rick Neiss caught three passes for 59 yards while Wakitsch hauled in two for 29 yards. Doug Wickman also caught two for six yards. Warren Moulis carried six times for 26 yards to lead the rushing attack. Schmitt is hoping to have his Skyhawks at full strength next week against South Beloit as seven players were hobbled against North Boone. Out last Friday were Mike Valen (pinched shoulder nerve), Rob Schmidt (ankle), Mark Fluger (knee), Pat Schifferdecker (out for season), Alex Bingman, Pete Barroso and Steve Sisk. "Sisk went into the hospital early Friday with possible blood poisoning," Schmitt said. "We had Valentin going both ways in the second half after Schmidt hurt his ankle. I'm sure it affected Valentin's play since he didn't have time to warm his fingers between possessions." Against South Beloit next week, Schmitt said the Skyhawks would have to stop the Thorntons, Beloit's two best receivers. In Beloits 6-0 victory over Huntley last week, the Thorntons teamed up for 226 yards in the air. "We'll definately have to stop the pass," Schmitt concluded. Joel Wakitsch f iv Lynn Swarm Mot ional Director (SsKSIr?iSSS'M No one seems to know who played the first base ball game, but as long ago as 1700, the Rev. Thingrstarted to crumble in the second quarter, however, as John Baumgartner of 1.C. caught a 30-yard, fourth-down pass (top insert) at the three yard line as Marian defender Tom Sharp (37) can do nothing about it. I.C. scored on the next play. To the right, Marian fullback, T. J. Baumann, (far left) fumbles the ball as John Guerrieri of I.C. (2) reaches for the loose ball. The fumble was recovered by I.C. but proved harmless as the half ended. Cimino scored two of the I.C. touchdowns as Marian eventually lost the game, 26- 2. STAFF PHOTOS-JOEL WAKITSCH McHenry Beats Dundee, 45-0 Joe Schlender's Warriors dealt a crushing homecoming defeat on the Dundee Cardunals, 45-0 Saturday afternoon. To say the Warriors had a field day is putting it mildly. The Warriors scored seven touchdowns in the process, and but for a merciful coach, could have easily added more points on the board. On the first play of the game Rob Kalck raced 55 yards to the Cards 10, but then the Warriors were assessed the first of many penalties and the ball was put on the 25. The Cards held, and when they coulnd't gain any yards, Schuring, their fine punter, kicked one 77 yards to the Warrior 8. After a punt to the 40, Jack Jablonski picked off a Dundee pass and raced 64 yards to paydirt and when Sean Haley kicked the point the Warriors led 7-0 at 1:50 of the period. Just into the second period, Rob Kalck ran 32 yards for another TD and the kick failed and the Warriors were up 13-0. The Cards fumbled the kickoff mi the 24, and Keith Belzer hit Dave D'Angelo for 24 yards and another touchdown. The point again failed, and the Warriors were on the long end of a 10-0 score. Those three TD's came in a span of 3 minutes and 50 seconds. Near the end of the period the Warriors scored again. This time Belzer found Tim Klapperich open and the result was a 47 yard touchdown pass and run. The kick again was no good and the Warriors led 25-0 at the intermission. Rob Kalck ran for 92 yards the first half, and except for some penalties, could have added another 60 yards to his total. the Warriors took the second-half kickoff to their own 37. A pass to Dave D'Angelo was good for 17 yards. Doessel ran to the 2, but another penalty put it back to the 17, then D'Angelo, who with a bit of slippery running, scored another T.D. Again the point was no good and it was 31-0. It was a 63-yard march in five plays. The rest of the period both teams played between the 30 yd. lines.' After the Warriors kickoff to the Dundee 12, the defense hung in and forced a punt to the Card 40. Two plays later, Dave D'Angelo ran 33 yards for the score and Haley's kick was good for a 38-0 lead. The Warrior defense again forced the Cards to kick and as the period ended the Warriors had the ball on the Card 30. Pete Ritthaler, on a pitchout, broke two tackles and ran ummolested into pay dirt for the final score of the day. Haley again split the uprights and it was 45-0. Coach Schlender along with Jerry Curtright, coach of the Cards, began to use the bench, and neither team made much yardage the final 11 minutes of the game. As Coach Schlender said after the game, "It was a big win for us, coming off three defeats." He had nothing but praise for his squad, and I might add he was a very happy man Saturday afternoon. It was a case of Warrior speed against the slow-footed Cards. The Warrior backs made a lot of yardage, with the linemen opening up hole after hole all afternoon. Friday, it's the Tigers here for another big game for the Warriors.
