OCTOBER IS. ltOO So I Hear Have told several McHenryites to watch this space for announcement of the next reunion in Florida. Might as well give you the entire letter received from Bill and Pauline Furies. Here 'tis: "Dearl Earl: "It's that time of the year again and we know all for mer residents of McHenry residing in Florida are looking forward to our next reunion. It will be November 15th, 1960 at Fred Howard Park, Tarpon Springs, Fla., Shelter No. 4. "We* are anticipating a great turnout this time as our list now contains over 250 names and it's growing all the time. "All attending are requested to bring their own lunch and beverages. Time is from 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.' "Thank you, "Bill and Pauling Pries "P.S. We (Bill and Pauline) will not be attending this reunion as we will be on an extended trip. Sorry!" They didn't mention where the extended trip will take them. Suppose it is to Ireland. Everybody seems to be going to the Emerald Isle. Hear Dave Benrud is headed for "That Little Isle So Green". Should have told him to look up the Walsh family. Larry Huck must be the champion jogger in McHenry. Hovena Marshall has to rate as the champion hiker. Both cover a lot of ground each day. Sometimes I look at pic tures showing Before and After, then decide I like Before better. News travels across the county. A girl (she's only 86 years young), Anne Barrow, who moved from McHenry to Woodstock, is still a loyal Plaindealer reader. That's the old spirit! It was a breezy morning as I hung onto my hat and met Horace Wagner sailing along wearing a French beret. Horace said he has no trouble with the wind nor with bumping his hat getting in and out of the car. Wonder how one would look on my round face? Don't answer. After a long-time-no-see, I was happy to meet my Irish friend, Lucille Geraty, at the Rotary dinner on Sunday. Is it true there is a car license plate in McHenry that reads "Dr. JAW"? Saw a plate at the Longhorn that read "MOLL". A while back, we men tioned Dick Wimmer as an applicant for the Thistle Commissioner job. Art Tonyan read about it and recalled there were two such Commissioners in McHenry Township at one time. His father, Will Tonyan, was one of them. In a recent visit to the home of Fred and Agnes Bienapfl, they loaned me a book titled "Manual and Guide for Students and' Patrons". It was set up for the McHenry Public School for the year 1911-1912. There are still some living who will remember these names. Ancestors in some case. The Board of Education consisted of James B. Perry, Pres.; W.D. Wentworth, Clerk, John H. Miller, P.J. Cleary, Theodore H. Bethke, J.F. Claxton and N. P. Steilen. The entire supervisory and teaching staff was mighty small compare to these times. A. Edgar Nye, Supt. and Prin. Agnes Perry, High School. Alice Knox, 7th and 8th Grades. Kathryn Knox, 5th and 6th Clara Stoffel, 3rd and 4th Grades. Mayme Overton, 1st and 2nd Grades. Pearl Claxton, Grade Ass't. Cora E. Schulze, Music. Grace Clay, Drawing. They put it on the line in those days for pupils, teachers and parents. Dos and don'ts -- The Janitor had more duties than anybody. Get this. "He shall sweep each room and hall every evening after the dismissal of school, and dust with a damp cloth all furniture and woodwork every morning before 8:30 a.m." Other duties were winding the clocks and cutting the grass. There were more. To wind it up -- "He shall not use tobacco about the school premises." Fred questioned a report on the first high school girls' basketball team. I looked it up and found the following names on the 1911-1912 team: Mary Burke, Inez Bacon, Frances Welch, Agnes Tesch an3 Helen' Robinson. They were the Bloomer Girls. That team was in the McHenry Public School, now Landmark. Later history covers McHenry Community High School, starting in the fall of 1024. In our remembering Way Back When items about McHenry, Fred told of working on the "New Bridge" crossing Fox River on 111. Rt. 120. The cost of that bridge in 1927 was $85,000 says Fred. Those were the days! At least those were the days before we heard of inflation. Petie Schaefer says he also has a standing bet with Dave Freund each year about the number of games won by the Cubs and Sox. Says Dave and Denny Conway must have left the country since the season ended.
