IIKIJ'IV; |»AWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Lake. Illinois 60014 • (815) 459-2641 By Ellie Rusin Wildlife Committee "God's Dog" is the name the Indians gave the coyote, but today this much maligned animal has a right to fear for his future. Recent studies have disproved the' claims of western sheep ranchers and others who blame all their losses of domestic livestock on the coyote. Many sheep, for example, die because of injuries or illnesses they suffer while grazing unat tended and many just get lost. Contrary to the ranchers' myths are the fticte that 1) - coyotes subsist mainly on rodents and carrion; few on large live prey and 2) despite their hunting alone, coyotes are social animals who cooperate in puppy rearing and efforts for group sur vival. Meanwhile, coyotes are being exterminated by many means, the most abominable of which being "denning" (dens of coyote pups are soaked with gasoline and burned alive) and poisoning. One of the most popular poisons is |Q80, which stays in the environment for long periods and is passed from animal to animal. The use of 1060 and the practice of denning have been banned recently by Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andrus. He is being criticized for this by some groups and pressure is being brought to bear for him to reverse his decision.
