STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Bonus Program Of Guard Is Expanded The Illinois Army National Guard has expanded its bonus program for new enlistees and current members. ' A bonus of $1,500 is pow being offered for persons enlisting in many career fields, according to Major General John R. Phillips, adjutant general of Illinois. He said members of the Guard may also qualify for $900 if they extend their Public Invited To Head Start Program enlistment for three-years of $1,800 for six-years. The expanded incentive program includes the career skill areas of infantry, engineers, artillery, cavalry, medical, military police and missile personnel. Based on a Congressional authorization, which was effective Oct. 1, individuals must enlist, reenlist or ex tend an enlistment in a position vacancy in one of the skill areas. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the First United Methodist church, 3717 W. Main street, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. , Dr. MichaelS. Shapiro, M.D. psychiatrist, will visit the # Head Start program and speak on "Depression". A question and answer session will follow. Because the McHenry community has been so supportive and helpful to the Head Start agency, an in vitation is extended for the public to hear Dr. Shapiro speak. After his talk, they are invited to stay for a homemade lasagna dinner. There is no charge. Dr. Shapiro obtained his undergraduate training at the University of Illinois, his internship at St. Francis hospital, Evanston, and his medical training at Loyola university. Since completion of his training, he has held the positions of' cHief of Psychiatry, Fort Benjamin Harrison; director of Psychiatric Residence program, Loyola university; director of Psychiatric In patient Services, Loyola Medical center; and is presently in private practice in Elgin and a consultant to . the McHenry County Head Start program. Anyone with questions about the program is asked to call Jo Ann Koth, social worker, or Lyle johnson, director of Head Start, at 385-3243. "Fiddler" On Stage The Woodstock Musical Theatre company is in production for its .eighth musical production, "Fid dler On The Roof", which was first presented on Broadway during the 1964-65 season. * It focuses primarily on the family of Tevye, the village milkman, his wife, Golde, and his family. The story, told through Tevye, is one of turmoil, government in trusion of the Jews and the breaking of traditions. It is also a story of love and family. The Woodstock Musical Theatre company was formed in 1974 and is When Thinking of Church, Think First FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 509 Front Street McHenry, IL (815) 385-00S3 Pastor Marshall E. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 16. 1930). James J. Marshall, for three years one of the leading bakers of McHenry county, whose l^akery is located on Green street, McHenry is one of the most efficient bakers in this section. He directs the mixing and shaping of more than 100,000 loaves of bread each year. Mr. Marshall is one of the community's leading citizens not only in theory, but in practice as well. The flour that goes into his bread comes from the McHenry Flour Mill; the eggs he uses come from nearby farms, either direct from the poultry raisers themselves or through the local stores; his butter, when practical, comes from local creameries and it is his pride that so far as is possible a loaf of bread, produced by his bakery is made up almost entirely of McHenry county ingredients. Announcement of the opening of an I.G.A. store in West McHenry by Art Smith appears in the advertising columns of this week's Plaindealer. The location is at the corner of Main street and U.S. 12. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 17, 1940) The first service of a new fiscal year was observed at the McHenry Community Methodist church, when Rev. A. Turley Stephenson of Evanston, superintendent of the Chicago Northern district of the Rock River conference, was present to deliver .the sermon of the day, bringing a message of encouragement and in spiration to those who heard him. The new pastor, Rev. J. Heath Miller, who was ap pointed to this charge, and his wife, will arrive in McHenry the last week to be in readiness for serving the local church. An increase of $279,000 is noted in the total assessed valuation of all property in McHenry county for 1940 as compared to the total of 1939, according to the figures released in the office of County Clerk Raymond D. Woods in Woodstock. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of October 13, 1955) In observance of the tenth anniversay of the opening 6f the local Veterans of Forfeign Wars Post ' NQ. 4600 ̂ McHenry members planned two public affairs. The first is a dance at the V.F.W. clubhouse and the second is open house at the clubhouse for everyone. Nancy Siemon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Siemon ot Shalimar, . has accepted a position as stewardess with Northwest Orient airlines. She is based in the Twic Cities of Min neapolis and St. Paul and will fly routes to Detroit, Milwaukee, Chicago, New York and Washington, as well as westward to Billings, Spokane, Portland and Seattle-Tacoma. After graduating from the local high school, Miss Siemon attended the College of St. Theresa at Winona, Minn., from which she was graduated last Spring. Gary, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Vale Adams, suffered a broken foot while practicing football. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 9, 1970) Business Manager James Lawrence of School District 15 presented the City Council two proposals to meet the serious problem of sewage disposal at the new school located on Ringwood road. The plain facts now indicate that the school will be ready for occupancy before the city can possibly complete the vast construction planned. The first plan was to build holding tanks and haul the effluent to the city disposal plant for treatment. The second plan was to build a temporary line to the nearest point of connecting to the city mains. The cost could run between $40,000 and $50,000. The Wonder Lake Bible church held ground breaking ceremonies for a new $200,000 building on Howe road, the site of the church. Rev. Richard Wright, pastor, addressed the large crowd assembled for the ceremonies. Editor's Quote Book Our doubts are traitors and cause us to miss the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.
