But Ken Howard, who stars as that coach in CBS-TV's 'The White Shadow,' was /not on the show's Hollywood set. He was delivering the commencement address at his alma mater, Manhasset Junior Senior High School in Long Island, N.Y. Howard and other members of 'The White Shadow' cast were in and around Manhattan this past June filming a two-part episode entitled 'Reunion.' (The conclusion of the two-part episode can be seen on Thursday, October 23.) The episode deals with Coach Reeves' return to his alma m^ter to attend his high school class reunion. While home, Reeves learns that his father, played by veteran stage and screen actor James Whitmore, is seriously ill and may not have long to live. "Memories of my own high school days at Manhasset," Howar^d said, "helped spawn 'Shadow,'" In which he portrays a white coach in predominantly black school in a ghetto neighborhood. while in high school, Howard, an honor student, played all-country basketball for Manhasset. The tall (6'6*) handsome youth was the only white player on an otherwise black team. As viewers of 'The White Shadow' know, the show features scenes of some very proficient ballplaying. Howard was insistent that they look good. "I hadn't been playing much, but when I knew I was going to do the series, I started running and working out and trying to get it back. I had them take long camera shots so the audience would know it was really me playing. When it comes to the slam dunk shots in the show," Howard confesses, "they lower the basket a bit. I used to be able to dunk, but I can't get up that high anymore. "The real fun of it. though, is making some moves so the guys in the audience who play ball know that I was a real player. Speaking of real players, the upcoming season of 'The White Shadow' promises to be special, featuring guest stars like the Harlem Globetrotters. Bill Walden. Magic Johnson and Al McGuire." tv commim acimcn. me.
