Sorority Strikes At A.L.S. Special Fall Services Offered By Easter Seal PAGE & - PLA1NDEALER - FftlDAY. OCTOBER 17.1980 Society, 708 Washington street, Woodstock. Dorothy Haddick, right, XI Kappa Iota chapter and chairman for tag event, distributes tags and contribution cans to Judi DeWulf, left, president of Pi Alpha chapter, and Virge Stasiak, president of Xi Kappa Iota chaper. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Saturday, Oct. 18, has been proclaimed "Strike Out A.L.S." day. Members of the McHenry Beta Sigma Phi sorority will distribute tags in the shopping areas on that day. All funds collected will be forwarded directly to the Illinois chapter of the A.L.S. Foundation. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (A.L.S.) or Lou Gehrig's Disease as it became known after it killed the famed baseball player in 1941, is a disease that causes deterioration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain that govern the body's motor functions. The cause of the disease remains unclear, and there is no known cure for it. Victims may live two or three years from the time of diagnosis or they may live up to 10 or 15 years. Beyond that, scientists can only speculate about A.L.S. At one time, A.L.S. was thought to be a rare discorder. Doctors now think, however, that it strikes more new victims each year than does multiple sclerosis, a nerve disorder that is almost never fatal. Early symptoms of A.L.S. include a feeling of weakness and a wasting away of the muscles of the hands and feet. As the disease progresses, the use of arms and legs may become severely hampered. Eventually, the tongue becomes too weak to move food and swallowing becomes impossible. Despite the extreme loss of motor functions, victims suffer no loss of mental facilities during the course of the affliction. One of the major programs of the National A.L.S. foundation is to sponsor research grants and fellowships that will find the cause, treatment and cure of A.L.S. These grants support researchers and scientists in their search to find the solutions to the dread disease - Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. An eminent panel of doctors, all members of the advisory council of the National A.L.S. Foundation, carefully review and judge all applications for funding. The Foundation is currently supporting much needed research. On Sept. 1 an A.L.S. center at Billings hospital in Chicago was opened. This center was approved by the board of directors of the National A.L.S. Foundation, Inc., in June, 1980. The clinic at the University of Chicago is the second of its kind of four planned for the country by the Foundation, patterned after the model treatment center at New York's Mt. Sinai Medical Center. It will be funded by the National A.L.S. fund. Beta Sigma Phi Sorority is a n i n t e r n a t i o n a l o r g a n i z a t i o n , n o w celebrating its 50th an niversary. It was founded April 30, 1931 in Abilene, Kansas. Beta Sigma Phi is a social, cultural and service organization with over 250,000 active members. The sorority is not a secret organization; it is not con nected with any school or college; it is non-political and non-sectarian. Members are active in small chapter groups and each chapter plans its social, civic, service and cultural activities to fit the interests of own members. The keynote of Beta Sigma Phi is friendship. McHenry at pre^ijt has two active chapters - Ritual of Jewels Chapter Pi Alpha, and Exemplar Chapter Xi Kappa BIBLE VERSE And unto man he said. Autumn, usually associated with green leaves turning into shades of red and gold, and football games, can also be a time of increased physical activity. Raking those beautiful leaves can result in strained backs; getting the house ready for the winter, putting up storm windows, and checking gutters, can result in falls from ladders causing fractures. And that popular sport, football, when played by those energetic, but not always ' proficient "sports" can c&use a variety of sprains, strains, and frac- tur le Easter Seal Therapy center has a number of treatments to aid those in volved in such accidents. Working under a doctor's prescription, registered physical therapists and occupational therapists use the team approach to therapy. The Therapy center has a large, well-equipped gym and exercise room plus the following modalities: Whirpool, traction table, diathermy, ultra-sound and electrical stimulation machines, and a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit. Therapists employ many techniques to make sessions more appealing and suc cessful. A technique which is favored by many patients,is the adoptation of a favorite sport for the therapy routine. Practicing the golf swing, for example, helps develop balance skills. Also available through the Therapy center in Wood stock is the loan pool which makes available equipment such as crutches, canes, wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, elevated toilet seats, hospital beds and a hydraulic patient lift for a nominal charge. Physical and occupational therapy is rendered both at the center as well as to home-bound patients. This c6n- dition is caused by a tricho phyton, a type of fungus class. The lesion of ringworm of the body is characterized by a circle or circular ridge of blistery vesicle, which forms raised borders. The tendency is for these borders to ex pand into increasingly large circles. At the same time, the centers tend to clear up. There can be many different staged (sizes) circles over the body at the same time. These circular lesions often itch and can become very uncomfort able. Interestingly they sometimes do not itch. They are said to be contagious but spread is uncommon. I have found it rare for this infection to be transmitted. There are some other possibilities in seeking to diagnose a ringworm. One of the more common is psoriasis. Another is drug eruption. The most effective treat ment for ringworm of the body is the same as with ringworm of the feet, or athelete's foot. The oral drug Griseofulvin is the most effective but the least used because of its cost and the length of time for the cure. The most commonly ef fective treatment is the local application of Tinactin, or another anti-fungal drug, for a sufficient period of time- namely twice as long as it takes to clear the condition.
