JOE BAL'ML-shot a nifty 78 at McHenry Country Club last Tuesday during Sectional play in helping the Warrior Golf team in its bid to go to Springfield for State play. The Warriors tied for third in Sectionals with Lake Forest at 328 on the day, sending them to the State match this weekend. Bauml signs his card at left after a fine round which saw him (bottom, left to right) sinking a long putt, smashing out of the sand on number eight as the ball rolled nine feet from the pin, and giving the thumbs up to team mates who awaited Joe behind the ninth green. STAFF PHOTOS JOEL WAKITSCH On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt What a pleasant Saturday afternoon sitting in the Dundee press box (out of the cold) and watching the Warriors defeat the Cards 45 to 0. Paul Judson, Card basketball coach sitting at my side was amazed at the Warrior team. Couldn't figure out if the Warriors were that good, or the Cards that bad. I informed him it may be a little of both, that the Warriors have been ready to explode, but I guess it took the Dundee homecoming to set the spark. Coach Joe Schlender gained a lot of respect from the people in the press box, when he went to the bench in the third period. Who know what the score may have been, had he decided to pour it on. In looking back into the record book, according to my figures the last time a Warrior team won by so wide a margin was the 61 to 0 defeat of Woodstock back in the . 1961 season. The win was a good tonic for the Warriors, now if they can only eliminate the penalties at the wrong time, they will make the coaching staff much happier. Rob Kalck could have had a 200 yd. day easy, if it were not for the fact that a Warrior or two committed an unnecessary infraction fter the young lad was away upfield for long yardage. Dave D'Angelo didn't return any kickoffs for touchdowns, but what the young lad accomplished was handling the ball three times, and scoring three touchdowns. Shades of Walter Payton. Should be a good ball game tonight with the Crystal Lake Tigers at McCracken field. A win for the Warriors would almost insure them of a great season. Here is wishing the Warriors the best of luck tonight. "Hutch's" frosh-soph cross country team won the McHenry County title last Saturday on a cold windy day at West campus. Brian Wright was the individual winner in the race and did a bang up job in the process. The varsity finished third", behind Woocbtock and Crystal Lake Central. Marian Central and Cary Grove didn't take part due to previous committments. I looked forward to the dual between Woodstock's Rob Leanna, and Marian Central's ace Mike Eisele. that would have been quite a race, two of the top runners in the area battling it out over a three mile course on a cold winter day. Some changes will have to be made in scheduling the county meet in the future. Tomorrow is the Fox Valley meet in Crystal Lake, with six of the county teams taking part. Only Dundee and Crown are in Kane county. I suggest to hold the meet after the district and before the state meet. It is just a suggestion. Gary Gray's girls tennis team won the consolation honors in the Fox Valley meet held last weekend at McHenry. With a lot of underclassman, things look better for the veteran coach in the coming seasons. Chuck Cuda and his golfers will be in Springfield this weekend at the state golf meet. The Warriors finished th ird in the Sectional held at McHenry Country club last Tuesday, but still qualified for the state meet. Crystal Lake South as expected won in easy fashion, with Carmel finishing second. The top three teams qualify for state. The crystal ball didn't even get a little bit of a crack last week, as I finally had a perfect score. Too bad I can't pick the pro teams that way. This week I'm going to again stick with the Warriors to win in a close game over the Tigers. Woodstock to pull a Ohio State over Jacobs and win in easy fashion, Crown and Dundee, a toss up, but I'll pick Crown, and the Gators to knock off the Cary Grove Trojans, from the undefeated Fox Valley ranks and place Woodstock in sole possession of first place. I'll take the Royals in six games. Joe Bauml strolled down the ninth fairway at McHenry Country Club with orange golf bag dangling from his right shoulder. He gazed at his ball on the right fringe of the postage stamp green and then turned his head slightly to view his Warrior teammates standing in back of the green. Joe smiled and gave them a thumbs up. Joe knew that if he could hole the last hole in three strokes, that his team would have a good chance of going to the State Finals in Springfield come Friday. One of only two lettermen returning this year, Bauml had an up-and-down year for the McHenry golf team, but that didn't matter now. The sectionals is the tournament in which he would have to perform. He stood off the back edge as a bigger crowd gathered behind him. Deliberately lining up his 25-30 foot putt, Bauml tapped it within 24 inches of the hole and tapped his next putt in to give him a 78 on the day. Mike Bauml, Joe's Brother was finishing up on the back nine with an 85 at the same time and the McHenry scores were tallied. Mike Nank-85, Mike Lawler-83, Kirk Barnicle-88, Steve Svec-82, Mike Bauml-85 and Joe Bauml-78; a total of 328 using the four best scores. A crowd flocked around the scoreboard by the club house and stared as the scores from the 12 teams participating in the Sectional tournament were posted. Crystal Lake South was low team, as expected, with a 301 total. "Crystal Lake South will probably win the State," Chuck Cuda confided later. In second place, Carmel racked up a total of 323 and would also qualify for State competition with only the third place finishing team also joining them in Springfield. Scanning the board for the third-lowest score it looked like Lake Forest with a 328 was the pick, but because McHenry had tied them, both teams would be invited to compete. McHenry was going to State. "Boy, McHenry sure doesn't waste any strokes, do they," Pat Lawler, father of McHenry's Mike Lawler said in jubilation. "They made it to these sectionals by tying in the Districts." Other teams who were eliminated from State play included Dundee, 360, Highland Park, 331, Crystal Lake Central, 356, Zion Benton, 339, Rockford East, 333, Waukegan West, 362, Antioch, 337 and Rockford Guilford at 330. "I was really worried that Rockford Guilford would edge us out there for awhile,"Chuck Cuda sighed. Medalists in the day-long match that started at 9 am included, Pete Leveille, Crystal Lake South, 72, Turner, Crystal Lake South, 73, Brad Hazzarini, Rockford Boylan, 75, Correy, Crystal Lake South, 76, while Essler of Waukegan, Brennen of Carmel and Bauml of McHenry all had 78. The State tourney will now be held Oct. 17-18 at the Rail Golf Course north of Springfield beginning at 8 am. Two 18-hole rounds will be played by six players from each team with the best four scores being accumulated. The Rail course measures 6883 yards with a par of 36-36-72 with the course record 64. Last year's winner was Griffin High School of Springfield, who shot at 305-325-630 to win its second straight title. / Joel Wakitsch D'Angelo, Klapperich Among State Best Although six weekends of high school football have passed, the official stats for games up to the fourth week of the season are in and show McHenry is represented in two different categories. In class 4A, McHenry has two players represented in individual receiving. After four games, both Dave D'Angelo and Tim Klapperich of McHenry had hauled in 13 passes apiece. D'Angelo is in ninth place in the state with 184 yards gained while Klapperich sits in tenth place witH 181 yards. -In the fifth and sixth weeks of the season, Klapperich has pulled ahead 'pf D'Angelo, however as his totals now read, 18 catches for 293 yards. D'Angelo now has 16 catches for 252 yards. McHenry is also among the leaders in total offense in eighth place with 630 yards on the ground and 464 yards in the air for a total of 1094 yards. It worked out to an average of 273.5 yards per game. Since the fourth game, McHenry has upped its totals to 653 yards in the air and 1083 yards on the ground for a total of 1736 yards or 289.3 yards per game; a slight increase. Alot of the credit for the good offensive statistics goes to quarterback Keith Belzer who ranks number eight in the state passing with 464 yards total or an average of 110 yards per game. His average has fallen slightly to 107.8 yards per game as he accumulated only 189 total yards in the air during the last two games. During the four week initial period, Woodstock has shown its prominence in the football scene as it is in cluded in the top ten of eight different categories. Sitting at the top of the heep in Team passing yardage, Total offense, individual receiving and Individual passing, Wood stock is also represented in Scoring offense, Scoring defense, pass defense and ^dividual rushing. Woodstock averages 168.8 yards passing as John Mohapp in first in the state with 16 catches and 345 yards after four weeks. Quar terback Matt Krause has passed 59 times with 31 receptions and 3 in terceptions for 675 total yards. Brad Downing is fourth in Rushing with 408 yards in carries in four weeks; average of 102 yards. 67 an r DAVE D'ANGELO JOHN'S SPORT STOP YOUR COMPLETE BASKETBALL HEADQUARTERS TuM biSCdUNTS to AREA SCHOOLS!
