Last Thursday, the harriers beat Cary Grove, 27-28 and crushed Crowfi, 15-50 at Randall Oaks. Gordy Bourey came in third overall, running just ahead of Brian Wright in the 3.1 mile course. Wade Cepulis took fifth, Steve Carby sixth and Don Mitacek ninth for McHenry. Mitacek passed Perron of Cary Grove a^fre finish gate to give McHenry the one-point victory. Mary Bazan ran first at 12:51 and Delia Saunders trotted in second as the girls lost to Cary Grove, 28-29. Beth Lance took sixth, Barb Zuber tenth and Sue Polka 14th in the losing effort. Mike Eisele of Marian Central ran the 3-mile course at the Amboy Invitational meet in a time of 14:57, good for second place out of the 155 runners as the Hurricanes took fourth out of the 18 teams competing. Coach Hans Rokus called the meet the "unofficial state meet" in Class A as 18 of the top 20 rated teams in the state competed including Petersburg, Florida who is ranked third in the state and who won the event with 09 points. Beecher took second with 103 points after being ranked second in the state, while Princeton came in third with 119 after a first ranking in the state. Marian finished with 105 . points in fourth, and they showed that they are better than ; their ninth ranking in the state. Immaculate Conception, also * of the West Suburban Catholic Conference finished one point " behind Marian as they came to the event with a number 10 ; ranking. Jamie Dowe of Princeton came in first overall at 14:48 to set a new record for the course, while Eisele's mark also beat the old record of 15:08. The Hurrican record stands at 10-2. Tennis In the Fox Valley Conference meet last weekend, McHenry's girls tennis team put its strength in the doubles teams and fell short in its bid to upset the number one and two seeded teams. Jean Hoch and Jean Rodenkirch lost to the eventual conference champs, Quick and Dodge of Crystal Lake Central, 6-4, 6-1. In the first round of consolation play they defeated Kuetemeyerand McGuireof Woodstock, 6-1,6-4, and edged the doubles team of Hopkins and Bumbales of Crown 'for the consolation title on Saturday. £ In the number two doubles slot, Jenny Prust and Chris Knox started slow in a 6-1,7-6 loss to Cary's seeded team, but in consolation they downed Woodstock's Rohm and Hecht, 6-3, 6-4. On Saturday, they then beat Dundee's Gedmin and Anderson team for the consolation championship, 5-7,6-3, 7-5. In number one singles, Melissa Dowe lost in her first try at the slot in tWo straight set matches. Sophomore Kelli Williams lost to Julie Peaco, 6-3, 6-0, then blasted Dundee's Renee Faber, 6-1, 6-2. Williams then captured the consolation championship with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory. Julie Larkin just missed an upset in the number three singles action as she lost to number one seeded Beth Brasile of Woodstock 6-1,4-6,6-4. In the consolation round, the rapidly improving sophomore avenged an early season loss to Crystal Lake Central's Heidi Lezak by a 7-5,6-3 score, but she lost a tough 4-6,6-3,6-3 decision to Cindy Roller of Dundee. Coach Gary Gray explained that since McHenry's best shot. of going to state competition lies in the doubles, he wapted to give the girls tournament experience. '"We came close this weekend, and the girls realize they' have a chance, so they're working very hard," Gray said. In the West Suburban Catholic Conference tennis tourney, the Marian netters finished sixth overall after being rated to finish seventh. Benet won the two-day event with 43 points, followed by Montini with 29, Immaculate Conception at 21, St. Francis at 20 Driscoll with 19, Marian Central with 18, St. Eds at 15 and Rosary at 5. Marian won three first-round matches on Friday, but lost three matches to Benet players on Saturday. Marian will host the Districts this year next Saturday. Marian finished the season at 2-5 in conference and 8-6 overall with a 3-2 loss to St. Francis last week. The number one doubles match proved, interesting as Sue Bolger and Terry Koch lost a three-hour match in three sets. The first set ended 7-6 as Bolger and Koch lost a 11-9 tie breaker, but they won a second-set tie-breaker, 7-5. The third set proved deadly as they lost 6-4. Ellen Miller won in the number two singles slot, 6-3, 6-1 and the number two doubles team of Hanrahan and fteihansperger won 6-2, 6-3. Field Hockey In a game that went into double-overtime, the McHenry field hockey team defeated Schaumburg last week, 3-1,. Just reread a book called "The Dieter's Fun Book", the book is funny, but not the dieting in my book. After the 45-0 clobbering our Warriors handed Dundee last week, we are anxious to see if the momentum will carry through their contest with Crystal Lake Central this Friday night. Talk about a whingding! Those baseball play-off games were so thrill packed that the World Series may be like an anti-climax to the season. Pitchers kept the situation in hand to prevent any runaway games. This is the time of year when we used to look for hickory nut trees and a farmer who would let us pick up a sackful. Grandpa Joe McAndrews was a kind hearted soul who was willing to share at hickory nut time. Can remember my uncle, M. J. Walsh, loading a bunch of kids into the surrey and cracking the whip for old dobbin' to take off for the McAndrews farm. Have you ever tasted anything better than hickory nut cake? • Never saw so many bees as we have buzzing around uiis year. They are hungry little devils. Maybe a hard frost would take care of them. The Chicago Bears are going to try a new quar terback. If that doesn't work, they had better back up the bus. Due to complications, Hans cannot wear artificial legs and has been confined to a wheel chair. Some of his former friends in Chicago and McHenry dediced to start a fund for him so that Hans could get an electric cart to help him get around. McHenryites, who have visited Hans in Florida, tell me he comes up smiling after each about with surgery. Chapel Hill Rd. McHenry 385-0333 i----COUPON*-- The McHenry Warriors will host a long time foe tonight when they take on the Crystal Lake Tigers in a 8 p.m. kickoff Fox Valley game. The Tigers of Bill Mack are having a so-called let down year. They are presently 2-2 in the Fox Valley and 4-2 overall. This is quite unusual situation for the veteran coach of Tigertown. The mainstay of the Tiger offense is senior tailback Jon Simon, who can run with the best of any player in the conference. The inexperienced Tigers, only two lettermen returned, have lost only to Woodstock and Cary Grove, both of them defeated the Warriors. The Warriors fresh from their 45 to 0 romp over hapless Dundee, will be gunning for a win over the Tigers. With no injuries reported from Saturday's game, the Warriors should be raring to go against the Tigers. The running of Rob Kalck and Dave D'Angelo, should have the Tiger's working on defense this week. Keith Belter who It turning Into a pretty good high scN|M passer, can keep the Crystal Lake eleven honest, with key receiver Tim Klapperich a constant threat on the receiving end. The Warrior defense of Andy Saunders, Jack Jabtonski, Jeff McNIsh and Dan Freund in the front line, should give Simon some second thoughts about running up the middle. It won't be a cakewalk, but it should be a whale of a game. Kickoff 8 p.m. e i VISITORS What college team holds the record for most points scored in a football game? Not to be left out were J. Sytsma, 211, 186 and 159 to total 556; and J. Lescher bowling over his head, 196, 168 and 137 for a 501. For the women, S.
