I SERVICE NEWS I Rescue At Sea Effort Navy Gunner's Mate 1st Class Claude H. Mohler, son of Pete and Peggy Mitzo of 1105 Oakwood drive, McHenry, recently par ticipated in a rescue at sea. He is a crew member aboard the destroyer USS Hewitt, homeported in San Diego and currently operating as a unit of the U.S. 7th fleet in the Western Pacific. During operations in the South China Sea, Hewitt personnel sighted a small boat. Upon directing its airborne helicopter to in vestigate, 12 persons were discovered aboard the vessel, shouting and waving their arms. TKe Hewitt maneuvered alongside the boat and brought the refugees aboard. All were in good health and stated they had been at^sea for 15 days, the last four adrift with a faulty engine. The 563-foot long Hewitt has traveled more than 27,000 miles during its four months at sea. The 250-man crew has visited Hawaii, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), the Hewitt is armed with guns, ASW torpedoes and ASW rockets. Mohler joined the Navy in December, 1971. Airman DeVivo is an aircrew egress systems mechanic at Homestead Air Force base, Fla.
