By Stanley James The First Volunteer Cav alry was organized in 1898 for service in the Spanish- American War. Composed of rugged men picked from mining camps, cattle ranges and college gymnasiums, the regiment was appropriately nicknamed Rough Riders. More than other Americans, they were yearning for con quest and eager for war, and t h e S p a n i s h - A m e r i c a n conflict was viewed as an opportunity for action. The name Rough Riders would also prove to be in keeping with other colorful military characters of the war: Major General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, an ex-Confederate who was heard to shout in the con fusion of the battle, "We've got the damn Yankees on the run!"; Lieutenant John J. "Blackjack" Pershing, later made General of the Armies in World War I; General Adna R. Chaffee, com mander of the brigade con taining the corps in which the Rough Riders served; the Tenth (Negro) Cavalry, the famed "Buffalo Soldiers"); and Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Roosevelt, second in command of the Rough Riders. v ^ APf MS cumiY cumiY cuimy CUKITY CURITY C UNITY CURITY CURITY CURITY CURII > CURIT Save 20%-22%! Ironi cally, eyewitness accounts report all the men-with the exception of Colonel Roose velt-were on foot during the attack. In 1948 a special U.S. postage stamp was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversity of the organiz- tion of the First Volunteer U.S. Cavalry--the Rough Riders. The stamp shows Solon Borglum's statue of Captain William "Bucky" O'Neill, who was killed in the conflict. ^^ ENCEPHALITIS Two additional cases of St. Louis Encephalitis have been confirmed by the Illinois Department of Public Health, bringing the state's total this year to three. These are the first cases of the disease to occur in Illinois since 1977. Ac cording to William L. Kempiners, director of the state health department, symptoms of the disease usually begin 10 to 14 days following the bite of an in fected mosquito. Initially, the symptoms include severe headache, high fever and muscle aches. Stiffness in the back of the neck and problems with muscular coordination may follow. Prompt medical attention is essential. The potential for human exposure to St. Louis Encephalitis ceases with the first frost.
