Football is a rough contact sport and inevitably will produce its full quota of bumps and bruises, strains and sprains, cuts and gashes. Most of these aren't serious and the lads concerned are back in the game shortly. The American Medical Association reminds that a thorough medical examina tion is important for boys preparing to go out for foot ball, to make certain there is no physical condition that should be noted before start ing the rigorous training and hard knocks of the game. Proper physical condition ing hardens the body and in creases resistance to fatigue, thus helping prevent injury. A minimum of three weeks of conditioning are recom mended prior to t^c first game of the season. Good coaching enables the players to perform better and thus be less prone to in jury. Good officiating makes for better games and also helps protect the players. Proper equipment and fa cilities are important to re duce injuries. Good first aid procedures and medical care, with a physician readily available for practice drills and on the bench dur ing games, are major factors in cutting down on serious injuries. Precaution against the ex- practice is important. Many coaches schedule hot weather workouts in the early morning and lute after noon to avoid the heat of the day. The old rule against drinking water during drills and games has long since been proved dangerous. Water is necessary (o replace fluids lost through copious sweating. If your boy is playing on an organized team, the chances are that all of these safeguards are observed. If most of his playing is done on vacant lots, it becomes the parents' responsibility to see that the player has the benefit of the safeguarding principles. treme heat of early season •.•SETS RSSlMiMAKk! That's a big order. If we didn't have a good day, we had a good week. 'Twas because we called on good friends and good friends came through our door. SUDDEN THOUGHT- Can anybody tell me why Northwestern stays in the Big Ten? Referring to our reminiscing, Bob Adams wanted to know what became of the old curtain stretchers. It was a brief meeting so we don't know if they are on our side or not. But, who can win an argument with one of the so- called weaker sex? So -- here goes: When you're sitting 'round together Just the family ' round the hearth On the first cool night in autumn After summer days of mirth It sort of gets you thinkin' Of the worth while folks you meet And you get a closer feeling Toward your own dear ones and sweet. Whether converstaion's lagging Or the room is full of talk Somehow you feel they're with you Through all of life's long walk. Other folks are fascinating When the party's gay and loud But, somehow they're never near you When there's darkness and a cloud. Oh, I'm sure the family's closer On that first cool night in fall When the flames are dancing gayly Spelling yarns of love to all. McHENRY COUNTY'S MOST EXCITING MEN'S STONE 20%OFF Entire Inventory! So I Hear It. is now Sunday night. Early this morning somebody said, "Have a good day". The day was great until the National League Phillies edged our American League Kansas City Royals 4-3 in the fifth game of the World Series. Those games take alot out of a fellow even if you are sitting comfortably in your living room. There have been some great plays in the series and some mistakes. The only unpleasant in cident came in the fourth game when pitcher Dickie Noles threw one at George Brett. . Maybe Noles wasn't trying to bean Brett, but it looked mighty suspicious. Knocking Brett on his much publicized other end was no joke. Of course, Pete Rose had to play Mr. Big and stick his nose into the argument. Other players stayed put. The umpires kept the situation under control. We called on Tom and Nora Murphy in downtown Volo on their wedding an niversary. Business kept Tom hopping so there wasn't a chance to glean much of that Murphy wisdom or Murphy madness. Had a most enjoyable time visiting Earl "Marty" and Helen Conway. Then "Marty" returned our call and brought some old time pictures of McHenry. Believe it or not we ac cepted an invitation from Ilavern Gregory to join in a "Coffee" at her beautiful home where lady candidates from both political parties set forth their qualifications. Arnold Rauen (The Supervisor) was another caller. Oh, he's a big help! He ^offered my services to neighbor Bill Kreutzer in putting up storm windows. For some reason Bill declined the generous offer. Leo Heimer, old reliable S.I.H. reader, responded to our request for old time pictures and came a-callin'. We always have a good visit. He remembers more that I forgot. It was comforting to hear the voice of authority on a quiz show state that it is not a sign of dumbness or in sanity if you talk to yourself. I climbed the steps to the press coop all by myself Friday night, then followed "Twiggy" Miller's broad shoulders on the way down. No problem. That was a good football game from a defensive standpoint. Both Crystal Lake Central and the Warriors sputtered on of fense as the Central team won 3-0. The Warriors had two great chances to score, but failed to get over the goal line. Read all about it in the report on the game. Thinking back on the World Series, we note what a sharp job those athletes do in picking good looking wives. Sometimes a good friend and severe critic will let you know about words that / get through and into print. For instance, the word bit came through instead of bite. Quick draw also came out wrong. _ We didn't bother to check until we were told about writing the word youse without quotations. Nope. The word use appeared instead of us. EARL WALSH" ANOTHER TURNOVER--resulted in this play as South Beloit defensive back, Tommie Thornton, leaps high in the air to grab an errant Scott Valentin pass in Johnsburg's 34-6 victory last Saturday. The pass was intended for Doug Wickman (34) who did much better as a runner, scampering 97 yards in 15 SALE ENDS SUNDAY OCT. 26th carries for the Skyhawks. Thornton, who also plays wide receiver, caught all nine receptions for South Beloit and gained 105 yards on the day plus the only touchdown for the * losers. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAK1TSCH
