Extension office, and county courthouse. The Agricultural Areas and Conservation and Protection act was passed by the General Assembly and signed by Governor James Thompson as part of this state's efforts to "conserve, protect, and encourage the development and im provement of Illinois' agricultural lands for the production of food and other agricultural products." Through this act, farmers can protect and enhance farmland as a viable segment of the state's economy and can farm with the knowledge it will stay farmland for 10 years, Plocher explained. The law provides for a committee to administer the act, to be composed of four active farmers, no more than two of whom shall be of the same major political party, plus a member of the County board. The five-member com mittee is appointed by the C o u n t y A p p o i n t i n g authority, comprised of the county Agriculture adviser (David Plocher), chairman of the County board (Richard Klemm), and chairman of the McHenry County Soil and Water Conservation district 'Charles Budreck, Jr.). In order that Klemm and the committee may make their recommended ap pointments to the McHenry County board for its Nov. 18 meeting, Plocher said the application deadline has been set for 5 p.m. Nov. 6. Application forms are ap pearing in several county newspapers and the Far mer's News, official publication of the McHenry County > Farm Bureau. Ap plications should be mailed to the County Board Office, Room 204, McHenry County Courthouse, 2200 North Route 47, Woodstock, 60098. uniy DO, eetfng, iplicatii eri set f Appraise Health Fair "Excellent" Start Leaf Pickup Starting Monday, Oct. 27, the City of McHenry will be making pickups of leaves in containers each Monday. They will be unable to accept clippings, twigs or other matter. Leaves in containers may also be included in garbage pickups. The remainder will be picked up by the City, using a disposal truck, following weekend yard work. WEEKEND CROSSWORD The first verdict is in, and the decision is nearly u n a n i m o u s : F r o m organizers, volunteer, workers, and those who took advantage of the first McHenry County Health fair comes the appraisal: "Excellent." Volunteers-doctors, nur ses, technicians, and lay people-said the opportunity for people to obtain a free health screening at the Health fair proved to be beneficial. A similar report came from virtually all the 481 who took advantage of the Health fair. They ex pressed appreciation for the donation of time by the volunteers and the services provided without cost. Another sign of the public's understanding of the Health fair's purpose is that 393 of the 481 took advantage of the blood test at a greatly reduced charge for a comprehensive SMA-12 blood test that would have cost more under ordinary circumstances. Mary Ganek, R.N., director of education and coordinator of the Health fair for Memorial hospital and the other sponsors, said she has received good comments from participants and from people who were on ANNOUNCINC Grand Opening Winner's at Fowler's Carpet Kitchen Carpet Kay Stilling 2x 4 Oriental Rug Gary Rudsinski Original Oil Painting: Dorothy Noonan Congratulations! A Harvard hospital nurse said the people she saw had good health awareness and thought obtaining a current report on their condition a way of maintaining their health. A McHenry hospital nurse who worked as a counselor said she referred several people to a doctor for hearing problems and a few to an opthalmologist because of glaucoma. She was near the end of the 15-station Health fair, and people gave her their opinion of the event, which was favorable, she summarized. Mrs. Ganek praised the turnout of doctors and other professionals who helped provide a thoroughly professional atmosphere. Cited as "biggest health problems" were poor eating habits, overweight and lack of exercise-a capsule summary after talking with several doctors, Mrs. Ganek explained. Counselors encouraged people to obtain counseling on diets and exercise. Those with good health habits, such as people who stopped smoking, were praised for their realistic health care step. "They counseled people who smoke in an effort to point out the potential damage that habit can do to their good health," she reported. Mrs. Ganek said she received valuable help from Pearl Miyashiro, a Wood stock resident who worked with a Chicago Health fair a few years ago. The two women handled virtually all the organization, planning, recruiting volunteers, and promotion. Looking at the tabulation provided by a review of reports from persons doing the screening, the most frequently found ab normalities centered on hearing and foot problems. Vision problems related to the need to have prescrip tions updated in many cases, Mrs. Ganek summarized. The tabulation showed a sizable number of people 40 years of age or under-120 of the 481 were in that age bracket. Two hundred four were 60 years or older Responses from the 481 participants, most of whom took time to answer the ACROSS 1 Summit 5 Lamentable 8 African republic 41 Mild oath DOWN 1 "God's Little 2 Tete-a-tete 9 Undies fabric 3 Break the ice 13 Roue 14 Dele 15 Pierre's summer If Cavity 17 Debussy's "La --" 18 Clerical vestment 20 Do badly 21 Zealous 23 Calif, city 24 Song thrush 25 Trial site 26 Jewish month 27 Less intelligent 28 Greed or sloth, e.g. 29 Basic belief 30 -- and Fox 31 Porker 32 Deserter 35 Unending, to a poet 37 Forbidden thing 38 Forbear 39 Sicilian city 40 Billy -- Williams 4 Dutch commune 5 Exact 6 Mountain ridge 7 Hardly visible 10 Overplay one's hand 11 Mistimed 12 Small dog T O D A Y ' S A N S W E R BSSlg] nHDHSSl KEffiK! The children are 9 and 11 years old and prefer to entertain themselves. I would like to in vite a boyfriend over for com panionship when I baby-sit sometime, but my mother says "no", and insists that I would be putting my neighbor in an awkward position by asking them if I can invite him. Surely they must trust me after all this time? Babysitter Dear Babysitter: Although your neighbor trusts you, she is your employer when you are asked to sit. No matter what age the children are, tak ing on their care is serious busi ness and needs your full atten tion. Just as you would not en tertain a boyfriend if you were working at a department store, you should not when you baby sit. Also, having a boyfriend over would be awkward and un comfortable for your neighbor. Perhaps on occasion, you could ask your neighbor if a girl friend could visit with you. Dear Colleen: Is it alright to issue an invita tion to dinner or a party in person or by telephone to de fray the expense of stamps. Money Saver Dear Money: Yes, give the day, date, and time, and say if it is formal or informal. Sometimes people appreciate this type of invita tion more. It is more personal and you can get an immediate response to the reply. The ideal political candidate is like a good rug -- deep, durable, attractive to the eye and doesn't show the dirt.
