/ TW£ SHERIFF SAYS \ 1HE JAIL IS SO CRCMKXD (. HE'S GONNA DRAW NAMES Extend Deadline In Nineteenth Circuit Acting Chief Judge Robert K. McQueen announced today that the deadline for applying for the position of Associate Judge in the 19th Judical Circuit court has been extended until Nov. 6, because of the reported interest in the position by some losing the election for Circuit Judge. There willbe a period until Nov. 22, for public comment Voting by the Circuit judges will take place after Dec. 1, 1980, pursuant to the request of Judge Lloyd A. Van Deusen, Judge Thomas R. Doran and Judge Fred H. Geiger. The letter to McQueen stated: . "We note that a certain amount of controversy has arisen in connection with our participation as retiring circuit judges in the selection of new associate judges. "Since our only interest in the matter is to insure the selection of the best qualified judges for Lake county and the 19th Judicial Circuit, and to retain the confidence of the public in the judiciary, we would request that you delay the election of the new associate judges until after the newly elected circuit judges have taken office." Exercise vs. High Blood Pressure Risk A Stanford university epidemiologist recently presented evidence suggesting just how much the lack erf physical activity, obesity, weight gain, cigarette smoking, and family history increase the risk of developing high blood pressure. Ralph S. Paffenbarger, Jr., M.D., has been studying the health and medical records of Harvard university alumni since 1961. He presented his latest findings at the 52nd Scientific sessions of the American Heart association. Fifteen thousand (15,000) Harvard alumni ages 35-74 who had never been diagnosed as having high blood pressure were followed by questionnaire for up to 10 years to ascertain their current weights and heights, and their physical activity and smoking habits, as these characteristics might relate to the development of high blood pressure. Data available from early-college physical examinations (1916- 1950) complemented the questionnaire data and provided the alumni histories. Six hundred and eighty- one (681) new cases of high blood pressure showed up in the ten-year study period. The researchers - t|j£n compared those who developed high blood pressure with those who did not to find the relative risk of developing the disease according to each lifestyle category. The findings were summarized as follows: alumni who played vigorous sports like tennis or swimming were at 26 percent lower risk than those who did not. And those who played such sports during college were at no lower risk than non-participants unless they continued that activity after college. So the collegiate "96-pound weakling" who keeps exercising vigorously throughout life can avoid the risk of high blood pressure better than the Ail-American football player who "goes to pot" after his varsity career ends. Using standard "ideal weight-for-height" charts, the researchers found that men who weighed 20 percent more than the "ideal" were at 78 percent higher risk of developing high blood pressure than leaner men. And any man who gained more than 41 pounds, no matter what he weighed at the starting point, increased his risk 60 percent. The alumni who had parents with high blood pressure were at 83 percent higher risk than those without a family history. So the study suggest that if fate brings you into this world as the child of two parents wih high blood pressure, you have an unavoidable added risk. Cigarette smoking by alumni predicted higher risk, but this characteristic seemed to have no causative relationship to high blood pressure development, according to Dr. Paffenbarger. Diet and stress were factors not explored in the questionnaires. Dr. Paffenbarger says that failure to participate in vigorous exercise, obesity, weight gain since college, and an adverse family history are independent risk "predictors" of high blood pressure. He believes the results carry a very clear message to men of all ages: The Harvard Alumni Health study continues, with plans to look at alumni who have suffered heart attacks to see if their activity levels after the heart attacks had any effect on survival rates.
