In my opinion, a school should represent an entire city, not justy a portion... McHenry has not yet reached an extremely high population, therefore, only a single sports program is needed. MALE TEACIlEK-picked option two "There could be a need for as many as twice the number of present coaches if two separate programs are established... What happens when there is a need for two swimming, four softball and four girl basketball coaches instead of the present number? Some sports would have to be dropped or 'under-coached.' " The same teacher also said, "Our school board, at a meeting that included a report by the athletic director held during this school year, has already stated that it might be necessary to hire teachers in the fut ure, not because of their qualities as a teacher, but because of their ability to coach a sport. We can assume that an excellent English or math or special education teacher might not be hired, because he or she cannot coach." "As a parent, I would not be happy knowing that the only reason that my child's teacher is in the classroom is because that teacher can coach a sport. This would not be fair to the child, his or her parents, and the community." FEMALE PARENT--picked option two "...Has the School Board considered the problem of scheduling practices and games (for two sports programs), with both high school teams using existing sports facilities? It would be a nightmare." She also stated: "It is a shame that when the referendum (to add on to West Campus) was presented to the public two years ago, they turned it down-I wonder if the citizens are aware that they are paying more in taxes to bring East Campus up to life safety standards than they would have spent on enlarging West Campus." Obviously, there are some people concerned about the School Board making a move that they will be considering in the future. In part two of this three-part series, interviews with those involved, coaches, students and the present athletic director should prove interesting. Fart two will appear next Friday, while part three will appear in two weeks, exploring the school boards' side of the issue and how, other schools handled similar problems. Wildcats Hold First In McHenry Soccer You Can't Afford Not To Eat at The Top Deck At These Prices! Seven goals jvere scored six different players as the Wildcats of the Youth Soccer Program man-handled the Bluejays, 7-0 at Fruend Field Tuesday evening. Dieter Gramer booted two goals for the victors, who sit atop the sixth-eighth grade division of the McHenry Parks and Recreation Fall soccer standings. Others who scored for the Wildcats included Richy Hoffman, Chris Howerton, Jon Wiley, Monty McLean and Darren Miller as they ran their record to 4-1, good for eight points and a comfortable four point lead over the second place Bluejays at 2-2. Behind the Bluejays are the third place Orange team who Tumble-weeds Host Meet The McHenry County Tumble-weeds won two, first-place, two, second- place, and one, third-place team trophies at the Kenosha Invitational Power Tumbling meet last Sunday. Individual first-place finishers were Lisa Wilkinson and Rich Rigsby in the beginners division and Jon Roark in the novice division. Second place awards went to Debbie Gough, Mike McGowan, Debbie Pierce, Tammy Horton and Kirly Kunzer. A total of 34 tumble-weeds placed in the top 10 of their respective divisions. The Tumble-weeds will travel to Spring Valley, Illinois for its next competition on Nov. 2. have fouled to win in three outings thus far, but will have two more cracks at the blue team on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. Both are Saturday games at 3 pm and will rap up the Fall season in youth soccer. A total of 55 boys participated on the three teams this year, and Director of Parks and Recreation Pete Merkel hopes for continued success with the soccer program. "About 90 kids participated in our summer program, and we're looking for a good turnout for our indoor soccer league at Parkland beginning the first of the year," Merkel said. "Registration should begin about December 1." Other winter programs sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department include a men's basketball league, women's volleyball and a cross country skiing clinic in mid-November. Merkel also said he is interested in getting an all- star team together from the area in the future to take on the likes of the Crystal Lake and Barrington youth leagues. "Youth soccer has grown tremendously in other near by towns, and I know a couple of people who would be willing to work with our boys to bring our program up to their level, " Merkel said. "Right now, we're about three years behind the other towns because we just started ours." Joel Wakitsch Marian Netters To State Four girls from the Marian Central tennis team of coach Kerry Muldowney will be travelling to the state tennis tournament Friday. The two Marian doubles teams advanced to the semifinals of the district tournament last week and were invited to the state meet. In the district tourney, Marian failed to win by one point, but the duo of Sue Bolger and Terry Koch along with Joanne Hanrahan and Heidi Reihansperger will be among state qualifiers in 1980. Mike Lawler had a 159; Mike Bauml a 165; Mike Nank a 164; Kirk Barnicle a 164; Joe Bauml a 171; and Steve Svec a 175. With Lawler the only senior, the Warriors should have another good season next year. Crystal Lake South won the title, and it speaks well for the Fox Valley when two of its members finish in the top 10 in the state. Joe Schlender's Warrior football team close out the home season tonight against winless Jacobs. The Warriors lost a tough one last Friday night 3 to 0 to Crystal Lake Central. I still have to defend Coach Schlender's play selection down near the goal line, when Rob Kalck tried four times, and failed to score. Any other call could have been a disaster at that time. The Warriors will try and even their season's record at 4 and 4 tonight, and then go on to defeat Crown for a winning season, one of the Warriors goals this season. A lot at credit must go to the unherald members of the squad, the defensive line who did a good job of stopping John Simon, the fine Tiger tailback. Not too many teams hold him scoreless. If the Warriors play tonight like they did last week, it will be happiness in Warriortown tonight. Hutch will take his cross country team to the district tomorrow. In another year or so, look for this group to be burning up the course. A lot of underclassmen make up the squad. Took a busman's holiday last Saturday and journeyed to Crystal Lake to see the Gators and Cary Grove play an exciting ball game. Cary won 41 to 26 in a real thriller. Both teams marched up and down the field, it looked like a tennis match. Steve Murphy, the fine Gator quarterback was injured in the first half, and this indeed made a difference in the ball game. Neil Britt, fine Trojan field general threw four touchdown passes for a fine afternoon's work. Cary rallied for 27 points in the final twelve minutes for a real come-from-behind victory. S.I.H. brought a jinx to my crystal ball. I believe the peanuts put the crack in it last week, as I was just two for four which is really bad. I'll take the Warriors over Jacobs. Last home game for a fine bunch of seniors, and they want to go out in style before the home folks. Central to defeat Crown in easy fashion, South to rebound and beat Dundee. The game of the year in the Fox Valley with all the marbles on the table, conference championship, and a possible playoff berth, I'll pick the Blue Streaks in a wild one over Cary Grove. This should be a real ding-dong battle down to the final gun. DON'S 4105 E. Wonder Lake Rd. A total of 24 McHenry residents responded to a the Plaindealer mini-questionairre included in the Fall Sports Directory concerning a possible split in the sports program in McHenry High School. Although I expected more response, I appreciate those who did take the time because there were some interesting comments from most. The sample may not be big enough to give an accurate account of McHenry's feeling about the subject, but the percentages and opinions expressed are well worth looking over. As you remember, I gave the public three options from which to choose. The breakdown of the 24 respondants looks like this: OPTION ONE-two, four-year schools with two separate sports programs. Only three of the 24 recommended the first option-12.5 per cent. OPTION' TWO-two, four-year schools with one sports program (as it is now). A total of 15 out of the 24 like things the way they are-62.5 percent. OPTION THREE--revert back to two, two-year schools with one sports program (as in years past). Six out of 24 liked it better the old way-25 per cent. From my results, it seems that almost two out of every three respondants like the school boards' decision last year to have two, four-year schools under one athletic program. Based on my sample, another generality can be made. Students want the system to change, while parents and teachers seem to like it the way it is now. For example, the three who wanted to create two separate athletic programs were all students; two females and one male. Also, those that wanted to change back to a two, two-year system with one sports program were all female students. There were six in this group. As for the 15 who want the system to remain as it is, six are male parents, three were female parents, three were male teachers, while only three were students; all females. Does this mean that most students want change while the adults want no change? I hope you'll let me know if you don't agree. No one of the three wanting McHenry to split had any comments accompanying their decision, but many of those who picked option two and three were willing to back up their decisions. Here is some of the mail. MALE PARENT-picked option two "You can't split the sports until a swimming and tennis program can be offered at East Campus also. Equal opportunity for all!!"
