Clock radio to wake you on lime all year round Dad has a closetful of ties. Grandmother doesn't need anymore perfume. And little sister has outgrown dolls. To strive the yearly prob lem of "what do I get that someone special for Christ mas," many people will be giving a gift that is versatile, fun, and easy to learn and play -- and appropriate for music lovers of any age -- the guitar. If you are planning on giv ing a guitar as a gift this Christmas, the Guitar and Accessory Manufacturers Association offers these tips to help simplify your selec tion. Don't buy the beginning player an expensive, top-of- the-line guitar. At the same time, don't buy a toy that will go out of tune easily. Acoustic guitars range in price from $100 to $600 and up. For about $150, you can purchase a good quality in strument that will sound perfectly respectable. The recipient can always trade up to another model after he determines his needs. Buy a brand-name guitar. Manufacturers guarantee quality instruments, assum ing they are properly used and cared for. Start a beginner with an acoustic rather than electric guitar. Learning to play an acoustic guitar is easier and also does not involve the in vestment in the instrument, plus amplification equip ment. Give a beginner a guitar with nylon strings. They are much easier on the fingers than steel strings. Ask the dealer to check the instrument's "action." Action determines how easi ly the strings can be de pressed. A guitar with "low" action will be easier for new player to use. Also, make sure the strings don't vibrate against the frets when depressed. They should lie almost flat, with only enough room for a dime to pass between the string and fret Buy a hard case for the best protection and don't ex pose the guitar to dampness or extreme changes in tem perature and humidity. Check the working order of all pickups in an electric guitar. Plug the instrument into the amplifier and tap each pickup on its corre sponding toggle switch posi tion. (The toggle switch is the device that changes the power from one pickup to another.) A properly work ing pickup will produce a loud tapping sound in the amplifier. Investigate self-instruc tion materials at your retail music store or look into group music lessons in your area. Many recreation and park departments, YMCAs, music retailers and private studios offer group guitar lessons that cost only a few dollars per session. Consider guitar accesso ries as stocking stuffers.
