< "HON 2• PAGE4- PLAINDEALER• WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 5,1980 Cracken Twice Told Tales Taken from the files of June 4, 1942 Harold J. Bacon, son of Mrs. Nellie Bacon of this city, was selected treasurer of 'the Illinois Bankers association at a convention in St. Louis two weeks ago. Mr. Bacon, who was for merly employed at the West McHenry State bank for many years, is now cashier of the Home State bank in Crystal Lake.. _ Graduation exercises for St. Mary's-St. Patrick school will be held in St. Mary's church, in connection with a high Mass at 8:30 p.m., June 7. Diplomas will be awarded after the Mass by Very Rev. Msgr. Nix. There are 22 graduates, as follows: James Althoff, Richard Blake, Ann Bolger, Nancy Carey, Joan Durland, John Fleming, Marion Freund, Marie Jackson, Howard Knox, Kathryn Nye, John Sales, Merwyn Schmitt, Florian Schmitt, Bemice Smith, Eileen Smith, Phyllis Smith, Jack Smith, Grace Mary Thompson, Michael Watson, Joan Weber, Harold Weingart and Rosalie Williams. Even a full moon beamed upon the 37 seniors, their families and the hundreds of friends who came to be with them at the impressive MCHS commencement exercises. The Legion awards were presented by Commander John Dreymiller. This year's winners receiving the plaudits of the audience were Virginia Williams and Edmund Lay, both leaders in their class since their fresh man year. Honorable mention for running close seconds in the voting were Ethel Kuntz and John Doherty. Virginia Williams, better known to her friends as "Ginny" is without doubt one of the most popular young ladies ever to graduate from the local school. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Williams and at sixteen is one of this year's youngest graduates. "Ed" Lay, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lay of Spring Grove, has made friends for himself by remaining totally unspoiled in spite of the continuous honors which have come his way as a result of his athletic ability. Another highlight of the evening was the granting of the honor awards by Helen Stevens to a few students who have shown unusual ability in their studies for their four years in school. Again the boys were in the majority with Edmund Lay, William Shoemaker, Lester Smith and Madeline Freund receiving appropriate medals. Residents of McHenry county can apply for sugar for their home canning in their respective com munities as deputy rationing boards have been set up to take care of this emergency. In the finals of the ad vanced high school girls' tennis tournament, Madeline Freund defeated Virginia Williams to become this year's cup winner. In the beginner's tour nament, Gladys Stilling won MSfiJftC. $400 MAIL-IN COUPON OFFER Rent RINSENVAC Today...And got a coupon worth $4.00 off on your next rental I Look for the special mail-in certificate on our RINSENVAC display. Playing a record 94 games of excellent tennis, Joe Jackson and Leonard Mc- won the annual Decoration day doubles tournament. The Shamrock baseball team won a non-league game "when they defeated the Crystal Lake Cubs by a score of 8-3. Harry DoweU turned in a neat five-hit pitching job and allowed only one earned run. Harry walked one and fanned six. Taken from the Files of June 25, 1942 Even before the 94 men called in June's first draft call left the county for active service, the names of 30 more to go in the second call of the month were released. Three of these 30, Daniel A. Justen, William E. Sutton and John Cannon, are from McHenry. Only one lovable girl between the ages of one and 100 years can be elected 1942 Queen of Funland, but the contest is still wide open and any candidate can still win. Five leaders in the order named are Lenora "Sun shine" Frisby, Evelyn Anderson, Dorothy Heilman, Florence Dean and Mary Lynn Murphy. Citizenship petitions of 30 aliens were filed in the circuit clerk's office in Woodstock. Of the 30 petitions approved for filing were Julia Zeilinski, France, McHenry; Emil Herdrich, Germany, McHenry; Erick J. Tmerk, Germany, McHenry; Gusta A. Carlson, Sweden, Ringwood; Kirs ten A. Miller, Denmark, Spring Grove and Signe C. Myers, Sweden, Spring Grove. The government auto use stamps are now on sale at the post offices. Motorists are required to have these stamps by July 1. The Johnsburg Tigers ran into some tough pitching at Hebron, collecting only 3 hits, but managed to bring home a 3 to 2 victory. Clarence Anderson pitched fine ball for Johnsburg, having a shut-out in hand until the ninth when two runs crossed the plate. A powerful, well-balanced Woodstock Alemite baseball team came to town and defeated the Shamrocks, 4 to 2. As recently as 1973, only three states-California, Oregon, and Washington- provided funds for nongame wildlife management Now, according to a National Wildlife federation (NWF) survey, an ever- increasing number of states are working to improve the lot of nongames wildlife- songbirds and other creatures that are neither hunted nor trapped. As of July, 1980, according to the survey, 27 states are funding nongame programs and another seven states are developing such programs. The federation obtained its figures by interviewing officials of the fish and game commissions in all 50 states. The findings confirm other indications that there has been a marked growth of interest in nongame wildlife since the beginning of the "environmental revolution" of the 1970s. "Among our members there has been a steady increase in the esthetic or nonconsumptive uses of wildlife-birdwatching, pho- tographi and Just c ng, sketching, just observing animals in the wild," said Thomas L. Kimball, executive vice president of the NWF "We are encouraged by this survey, which shows that state legislatures are responding to a surge of interest in wildlife on the part of the people." SECTION 2 • PAGE S • PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER S. 1MQ Kimball also called for quick implementation of the National Wildlife Con servation Act passed by Congress this month. This measure, which was sup ported by NWF. with its 4.6 million members and sup porters across the country, authorizes the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service to apportion PVu..
