Remembering When (with long time subscribers) NICK MILLER When Nick Miller, of 2220 Walnut street, Waukegan, walked through the Plaindealer door recently, he brought with him a well preserved picture of the 1928 MCHS football team, the first under Coach L.J. McCracken. Sports are among the first love of Millar, who was born and raised in Johnsburg. The captain of Mac's first gridiron squad, he graduated from the local high school in 1929. Miller recalls that it wasn't a stellar year for the team, but he beamed in remembering the win over Crystal Lake. The former local resident told of his days in McHenry during the Depression - in 1934 - when the government provided funds for a playground program during the summer. Miller wrote a column called Playground Notes for the Plaindealer. He also had a baseball team and among the members he recalls were Herb Reihansperger and Don Meyer. With a chuckle, he reminded that Johnsburg and McHenry were keen rivals in baseball in those days. Another memory was of the circus that came to town every year and set up a tent in the old Wattles field on John street. After graduating from the University of Illinois, he taught feu* a time at MCHS, at one time substituting for M.L. Shoenholtz, but left the community to reside in Waukegan in 1935. Memories of softball games back of John Anderson's Broadway Barbecue (where the First National bank now stands) brought a smile. Among team members were Zeke Bacon, Howard Pflug, George Bohr, Joe Schmitt, Clarence Smith, Ed Thennes, Gus Freund and Harold Fruend.
