Presented by STATE BANK OF RICHMOND member F.D.I.C. Q. I'va hoard a lot on tha newscast* lataly about diffarant economists aaying tha recession la ovor. Poraonally I can't aaa that thara hava boon any major changat. How do thoy juetify thalr optimistic statements? A. When you really listen closely to the opinions of economists you will hear others who think its not over and some who don't even think it started in the first place. For the most part, however, they do seem to generally agree that the recession probably ended sometime this summer. That feeling is based on a number of factors. Automobile sales have shown some sign of recovery. Housing starts nationwide are increasing. What is called the "index of leading indicators" ad vanced rapidly in early summer. Unemployment dropped slightly during the summer. Large companies reported increases in orders and retail sales showed three months of steady growth. All these factors point to an increase in the economy rather than a decl ine typi f ied by recession. If the recession did in fact end at mid summer, then it will go down in the economic text books as the shortest one ever. spurgeons World Community Day First United Holds "Pony Express" Run uphold, their efforts as we proudly salute all servicemen and women, s We will be CLOSED November 11 DRIVEUP-0PEN November 12 Regular Wednesday Hours Richmond Road S Paarl Straat McHenry Slate Bank 3510 W.
