Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November IS, 1930) J. C. Thies, wholesale confectioner, has moved his establishment from the Brefeld building on Main street to the Morrow building on the same street. Owing to his increasing business, Mr. Thies found it necessary for larger quarters and so the move was made. Many changes are being made in his new location, including the in stalling of shelving and other conveniences necessary for the work. Twelve girls are now employed and are kept busy weighing and packing candy and making sacks. The present location will be temporary as the proprietor has purchased a piece of ground in the Borden property and expects, to build a factory here in the Spring. A fire of unknown origin caused a heavy loss as it swept over the barn and adjoining buildings on one of the tenant farms of the 700- acre estate of M.H. Detrick, formerly known as the .Hanley farm. John F. Knox will move his pool room to the Brefeld building, recently vacated by the^ J.C. Thies & Co., wholesale confectionery. His family is already living in the flat above. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 14, 1940) Gone With the Wind! And it was no joke, Armistice day, when the old southwest wind kicked up a few leaves to start with and then con tinued on its destructive way until it began tossing people, trees and what-not all over the countryside. This devastating 64-mile-per hour wind, which caused much havoc in general of these northern states, brought with it the first cold spell of the season. The thermometer hovered around 10 degrees above zero. In true pioneer spirit, three young men from McHenryset out for the west last month, with the am bition of conquering new worlds. The trio was com posed of Joe and Louis Sch- mitt, sons of the Math N. Schmitts, and Charles Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Thompson. The Schmitt brothers located a 40-acre farm about 75-miles from Eatonville and 10 miles from Chehalis, Wash. Thus the two pitched in with vigor to fulfill their dreams of cultivating a large crop of strawberries, which will be their main product. Thompson stayed for two weeks and then headed back to McHenry. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of November 10, 1955) YOU CRN BANK on it! Presented by STATE BANK OF RICHMOND member F.D.I.C. Q. My wife and I are determined to start a regular savings plan. What type of savings accounts are available and what are the ad vantages of each kind? A. There are generally two ways for a bank customer to save money; either with the old, familiar savings account, or through cer tificates of deposit - CDs. Each have their ad vantages. Savings ac counts give the customer a great deal more flexibility. It is relatively simple to move money in or out of a savings account -- money can even be transferred directly to a checking account with little trouble. Certificates of dsposit, on the other hand, are less flexible, since the purchaaer of a CD, in ef fect, agrees to leave his money in the bank for a specified period of time - ranging anywhere from 30 days to 10 years in some benks. Savings accounts generally pay a lower rate of interest than do CDs, and for good reason. The bank doesn't know for how long, or how much of a savings account will remain in deposits. CDs can't be withdrawn prior to the stated time without a penalty and therefore can offer much more attractive interest rates. The city of McHenry will hold a special election Dec. 6, for the purpose of filling two vacancies in aldermank posts. One vacancy exists at present in the third ward due to the resignation of Leo C. Rotehrmel on Oct. 3. The second vacancy will face the present Council soon when Alderman Donald E. Johnson of the second ward will change his residence to Country Club drive, beyond the corporate limits of McHenry. Circuit Clerk Lester Edinger of Circuit court drew a panel of 30 veniremen from which 12 jurors will be chosen for the murder trial of Joe Jordan of Chicago, indicted for the alleged fatal stabbing of Auward McNutt of Chicago near the Fox river at Algonquin. Included on the panel are Christine M. Kennebeck, Elsie E.Tony an, Paul Harvey, Ben J. Thelen and LeRoy M. Conway of McHenry. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 11, 1970) About 300 teachers from District 15 and 156 in McHenry, District 12 in Johnsburg and District 36, Wonder Lake, as well as parochial schools attended a group meeting at West campus auditorium con cerning drug problems. An overflow crowd of persons at the meeting of the board of High School District 156 heard a presentation by West Campus Principal Richard Swantz on the modular system. Principal Swantz said the school is proud of the modular system program at West campus. In his discussion Swantz presented a sheet of "Vital Information" pointing to a particular questionnaire sent to parents in which they responded in favor of the system by a vote of 3 to 1. It was admitted that of 700 sent out from West campus, only 300 were returned, but Mr. Swantz said he felt if those who failed to respond had strong feelings about the system they would have done so. The Illinois Law En- focement commission has given assistance to the McHenry Police department in the form of an equipment grant for $1,501. All great men come out of the middle classes. •R.W.
