SECTION 2 ; PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, II Nov. 16 - 22 Winter Preparedness Week The Public Safety com mittee of the "McHenry county board has requested chairman, Richard 0. Klemm, to proclaim Nov. 16 through Nov. 22 as Winter Preparedness week. Stay indoors during winter storms unless absolutely necessary. If you must go out, avoid over-exertion. Cold weather itself puts an added strain on the heart. If you add to this exercise you are not accustomed to, such as shoveling snow, pushing an automobile, or even walking too fast or too far, you risk heart attack, stroke, or other physical damage. If you must go outdoors, wear loose-fitting, light weight warm clothing in several layers rather than a single layer of thick clothing. Entra££edMn8ulat^ warmed by body heat is the best protection against the coldv The layers can be removed as needed to prevent perspiring and subsequent chills. Outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. Wear a wool hat. The body loses between half and three-quarters of its heat through the head. Wear mittens instead of gloves-- they allow your fingers to move freely in contact with one another and will keep your hands much warmer Keep your clothes dry. Wet clothing loses all Insulating value. Change wet socks and all other wet clothing as quickly as possible to prevent loss of body heat Watch for frostbite and other symptoms of cold- weather exposure. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers, toes, tip of nose, ear lobes. When the body begins to lose beat faster than it can produce it, a condition called hypothermia begins to develop. Symptoms include: uncontrollable shivering, slurred speech and in coherence, stumbling, drowsiness and exhaustion. If a person shows any signs of overexposure, take the following measures- even if they claim to be in no difficulty: Get the person into dry clothing and a warm bed or sleeping bag. Use a "hot" water bottle (which should actually be only warm to the touch, not hot), warm towels, heating pad, or some other such heat source. Concentrate heat on the trunk of the body first-that is, the shoulders, chest and stomach. Keep the bead low and the feet up to get warm blood circulating to the head. Give the person warm drinks and keep them quite. Do not massage or rub. Never give alcohol, sedatives^ tranquilizers or pain relievers-they only slow down the body processes even more. If symptoms are extreme, call for professional medical assistance immediately. The chairman has requested McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster agency to make available additional in formation on winter safety. Add New Scouts More than 1,500 new members have registered in Scouting units this fall in the Blackhawk Area council, Boy Scouts of America, Inc. In addition, 16 new chartered organizations have received charters this year to bring the Scouting program to boys and young adults from ages 8 through 20. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers join units organized by community groups such as religious institutions, PTA groups, service clubs, veterans' organizations, professional associations and businesses. "We want to see the Scouting program reach as many young people in our 12- county area as possible," according to Grant Herman, president. "We are en couraged at the response of these young people and their parents in registering in the program." Cub Scouting offers boys ages 8 to 10 a home-centered program which emphasizes involvement with parents, adult leaders and friends. Boy Scouting offers boys 11 through 17 an outdoor program and peer group leadership. Exploring is for young men and women 14 through 20 and provides opportunities to learn about special interests and possible career choices. Youths or adults desiring to join Scouting or to find out more information should contact the Council at Box 4085, Rockford, 111., 61110, or phone 815-397-0210.
