PAGE 4 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 19.1980 ROBERT MUSIKflNTOW, Ph.D. psychologist for the Family Servico and Community Mental Health Center for Mchenry County (Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers .Joseph Cool is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is Being a Good ^Listener".) How many times have you had the experience of wanting to talk to someone about something that is really important to you, only to find that the other person ends up talking about one of his problems" It is easy to recognize this habit in another person because it leaves you with- the frustrating feeling that the other person is not really listening, is not really un derstanding completely. Not so easy to recognize is the possibility that you may do exactly the same thing to someone else. Being a good listener is not a passive activity It is an active process and ex tremely hard work It is difficult to concentrate all of your attention on another person,-and honestly try to understand everything they are trying to communicate to you The natural tendency •1980 rent soft\ R E N T A L NO installation charge NEW fully automatic softeners TWO year option to buy with FULL rental fee deducted ONE phone call can answer any questions 312-259-3393 FOX VALLEY DIVISION when someooe is upset is: to reassure them that it is not as bad as they think; to top their story with one of your own; or to tell them that they are wrong to feel the way they do The "active" listener will not try to persuade the other person that it is not as bad as it appears. The active listener will try to find out why it appears so bad. The active listener will not try to come up with a better story in his own life. The active listener will realize that the experience being related is of utmost importance. He will not try to shame the other person out of feeling bad. The active listener will accept any feelings from the other person - positive or negative. Listening takes a good deal of practice. When you have mastered the elements of the afrt of good listening, then you may expect the same from others; then you may say, "Look I was there to listen to you when you really needed me. Now I need you to listen to me. I don't need answers from you. I just need to know that you care, and can listen for a while." - Next: Alone on the Holidays. If adults set youth the proper example, it might be possible for young peo ple to follow their lead.
