Nov. 19,25 St Dec. 3.1980) No. 800004 Information Campaign Alert To Reye Syndrome One Bone At birth a baby's foot is com posed of masses of soft carti lage with only one developed bone in his heel. It takes about 20 years for his feet to fully develop. A public information campaign to alert McHenry parents of children under age 18 to the dangers of Reye's Syndrome is being launched by Poet No. 491 of The American Legion. Post Commander Ted E. Lenz announced today that the Legion has embarked on a nationwide drive to inform parents about this malady which some doctors have labeled, "the polio of the '80's." Reye's (pronounced "rye's") Syndrome is a complication of a viral in fection--the flu, measles, chicken pox, etc.--whose cause and prevention are unknown. It affects normal, active, primarily healthy children, 18 and younger. It is swift and deadly, but not contagious. "In a matter of days it can kill or cripple nearly half its victims," Commander Lenz stated. "The key to surviving RS lies in early detection and treatment. In order to provide the best chances for survival, parents must know what to look for and what to do when RS is suspected." Usually, a child appears to be recovering from a viral infection when the first signs of RS occur in the form of r e c u r r e n t , r e l e n t l e s s vomiting which may be followed by personality changes, headache, and restlessness. A child who is recovering from a viral illness should be observed carefully. If RS is suspected, the parent should contact a physician im mediately or take the child to a hospital emergency room. Quick action is im perative in order to give the RS victim the greatest op portunity for recovery. A pioneer of many programs to benefit children--physically, spir itually, and emotionally-- The American Legion, and its Auxiliary, have accepted the challenge of this public information campaign to alert parents to this malady, Commander Lenz explained.
