More products each season use the marvels of computer tech nology. One of the most visible ex amples of the electronic rev olution is the toy and game industry. But, as one show business legend used to say, "You ain't seen nothin' yet!" Once parents shared board games like Life, Can- dyland, Chutes and Ladders, Go To The Head Of The Class, and Monopoloy with their children. Then, the only sounds to be heard were squeals of delight when the \ HOLIDAY V "MR. DONS" CLEANERS INC. Now that toy and game manufacturers have learned to apply computer chip mi croprocessors to new prod ucts, as well as some old, a new dimension has been added to our fun... sound* A whole symphony of sounds! Every kind of beep beep, chirp chirp, whirr whirr, boop boop, ring ring, razz razz or any combina tion of these and others too difficult to translate. To give you some idea of the rapid growth of electron ic toys and games, only 12 toys and games incorporated computer chips in 1977. By 1979, more than 125 electron ic games competed for con sumers' dollars. This year nearly 400 electronic items will be available. Mind boggling, isn't it? And ear tingling!! One of the first electronic games, Simon, appealed 1978. Simon is played* by repeating a sequence of sounds the game itself pro duces. Shaped like' a flying saucer, Simon has four col ored panels -- yellow, green, blue and red. Each panel emits a different tone and flashes its light when de pressed. Depending upon which speed level you select, you have up to five seconds to respond or get "razzed." Sound complicated? It really isn't It's great fun and quite addictive. The success of video games -- units that connect to your television and are played with control boxes -- led to the development of another kind of electronic game, the video games that can be held in one hand while being played. Just about all video games are now available in hand-held versions -- blockbuster, baseball, football, basket- »soccer, bowling, pinball various "space invader" types of games, to name a few. By now, you must Wonder what's next . As if you didn't suspect the latest advancement in computerized technology is games and toys that talk. Al ready on the market are talking chen games, talking bridge, talking language translators and an educa tional spelling game. The future of the toy and game industry is limited only by the inventor's imagi nation. Undoubtedly, there will soon be more sophisti cated uses of computer tech nology. Computer chips will appear in many more prod ucts doing things once thought impossible. One thing is clear. The language of computers is here to stay. Soon they'll be talking our language in addi tion to their own. The future is sound -. in more ways than one!
