On less than two gallons of fuel, this modern port able heater will easily heat a 13x25-foot living room, family room or workshop for just pennies an hour. It all adds up to an economical wav to take the chill out of Yuletlde. If the high cost of heating your home has chilled your yuletide spirit, consider giv ing your family a gift that will warm their hearts and your pocketbook -- through out the new year -- a porta ble kerosene heater. A portable kerosene heat er is an ideal gift for the practical family that wants to conserve energy and cut heating bills but keep warm at the same time. With a kerosene heater you won't have to bundle up, chop, •stack and carry wood or sho vel coal to beat the energy crunch. Many of the heaters on the market today will provide heat for the living room, family room, den, basement, garage workshop, laundry room or sun porch for just pennies per hour. Most of them travel well, so you can take them to a weekend home, hunting cabin or campsite. Some models pro vide light and a simple cook ing facility as well as heat, which are good features in case of a power failure. The better units burn ker osene with 99.9 percent effi ciency and without smoke or odor. They operate at a sub stantially lower cost than electric heat and at about one-half the cost of central oil systems. In fact, a porta ble kerosene heater is so economical to use that even with a price tag ranging be tween $150 and $270 it is one Christmas gift that will pay for itself before the spring thaw. Safety, of course, is a pri mary consideration when purchasing and using any appliance -- whether it is a kerosene heater or color television. If the appliance has been approved by a rec ognized testing laboratory, it will bear that organization's label or mark. For example, seven heat- cates that they have per formed well under stringent testing conditions and meet accepted safety standards. In addition to the UL list ing mark, check to see if the heater is constructed of heavy gauge steel and has such features as a battery- powered ignition and an au tomatic shutoff device that snuffs out the flame if the unit is jarred. The unit should have a low center of gravity and the fuel tank should be located below the burner. Other things to look for are protective grills, se cure handles, seals at all joints and a base tray to pro tect floors and carpets. Next to fuel economy, the greatest advantages of kero sene heaters are their con venience and versatility. Many models will burn long er than 20 hours on less than two gallons of kerosene and a few models will burn near ly 40 hours before refilling. They require no installation, chimney or duct work. They are portable so they can be carried from room to room to put the warmth where you want it The heaters come in a va riety of styles and sizes and are available at hardware stores, lawn and garden cen ters and appliance and ener gy stores. To select a unit to meet your heating needs, simply multiply the number of square feet in the area you want to heat by 28 Btu hours (the heat output required to keep one square foot at 70 degrees Fahrenheit in a moderately severe climate) and select the model with the closest Btu rating.
