MUSICAL PARTY A holiday treat OS.-; -v f > PAGE 11 - PLAINDEALER • WEDNE8DAY, NOV • I Parties and Christmas seem to go together natural ly. Why not add something new this season by adding music to your holiday festiv ities? Research by the American Music Conference shows that one out of every five Americans plays an instru ment, so you should be able to tap the musical talents of some of your guests. Here are a few ideas on how you can use music to spice up your holiday par ties. Ask each of your guests to bring along any instrument he or she may play. Every thing from guitars to trian gles, flutes to bongos, violins to French horns will add to the merriment. Part of the fun will be hearing what types of sounds the musi cians can create with a vari ety of instruments. For your guests who do not play a portable instru ment, be sure to have a grab bag full of small instruments -- harmonicas, tonettes, flu- tophones or tone blocks -- at the front door. These, and other small, in expensive instruments can be found at a local music store. For an added touch, let your friends take the in struments home as gifts. To keep all your guests in volved in the music-making, have someone lead them in a rhythm section, using tone blocks, bells or castanets to accompany carols such as "Silver Bells" or "Deck the Halls." If the group prefers carol ing, have everyone gather around the piano or organ for traditional holiday har monizing or stroll through the neighborhood, accompa nied by a guitar player, weather permitting. For a special treat, have the preschool and kindergar ten set act out a carol, such as "We Three Kings" or "The Twelve Days of Christmas," while the older children studying music in school provide accompaniment for the younger actors. If your family wants to do the entertaining, a family band can serenade guests with their holiday favorites, take requests or lead a sing- along. By ringing in the season with a musical party for your family and friends, you'll give them something they'll never forget -- and have them singing all the way home.
