Don't let gifts unwrap joyless Xmas PAGE 21 • PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER H. 1188 trip i The warning came this month addressed to editors of all newspapers. "TOY COMPANY URGES REMOVAL OF ELASTIC STRINGS OF CERTAIN PRODUCTS IN ITS LINE " read the headline. Pictured was a pair of scissors about to cut the strings from floppy "Hummbug Bee" and "Embo Elephant," musical bounce toys imported by R. Dakin and Co. of San Francisco. This announcement is a sad reminder of the many children who are injured, maimed or killed by an ill- conceived toy. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of Washington, D.C., esti mates that toys are associat ed With 140,000 injuries each year severe enough to re quire treatment in hospital emergency rooms. The CPSC continually publishes notices of product recalls. Many of the prod ucts are toys found to be deadly or dangerous. But the word never gets to most con sumers. The main problem is that there is seldom a record in store files of purchase of small items such as toys and games, so the purchaser can't be individually notified by mail. Newspapers may print warnings, but, once again, unless people read the paper thoroughly every day the warnings are apt to slip by unnoticed. Therefore, it is a good idea for parents to take a long, critical look at the toys their youngsters receive this Christmas in terms of safe ty. Could children suffocate, get cut on sharp edges, gag themselves, shoot them selves, electrocute them selves or poke an eye out? The CPSA offers this ad vice for parents: -- Buy toys that suit the abilities of your child. Those that are too complex for the child can lead to misuse and injury. -- Avoid toys with small parts and propelled parts. Also avoid toys that can pro duce loud noises capable of damaging hearing. -- Explain the proper use of toys to your children and show them how to put them away safely so no one will -- Be sure your child un derstands all instructions and warning labels. Remember electrical toys present a special hasard and no electrical item with a heating element should be used by a child under age 8. Toys such as wood-burning kits that can get very hot should be reserved for chil dren age 12 or older. MORS CHRISTMAS Biphwtol Nn.
