The Hurricanes of Mary Stoner advanced to the final match by handily defeating Hampshire in the first round play, 15-5, 15-0 on ROBERT GLICK Wednesday. In the final match, senior Julie Berna was the high scorer for Marian with 12 total points, followed by Paddy Guerin with 11, senior McHenry girl Linda Aim with 10 and senior Betsy Powers with 9. In running their season record to 23-7-1, the Hurricanes won the Rock Valley Tourney Nov. 14-15, d e f e a t i n g R o c k f o r d Jefferson, 15-7, 15-10 as the team lost only one game out of 12 played in the tourney. At the left, Cheri Kofler, took aim at the right corner with this spike which regained the serve for Johnsburg. She later made the spike of the day, hitting the baseline and spurring her team on to a 17-15 come-from-behlnd victory. STAFF PHOTOS-JOEL WAKITSCH Skyhawk Spikers District Champions Plaindealer Using sound fundamentals and a little luck, the Johnsburg Skyliawk volleyball team beat Walther Lutheran for the District crown in come-from-behind fashion Saturday night at Johnsburg. The Skyhawks had earned the right to play in the championship match by defeating Driscoll Thursday night, 16-14, 15-6 and liad to overcome a strong Walther Lutheran team, who had advanced by sending St. Edwards home on Tuesday and by whipping St. Benedict on Thursday in three games. In beating Driscoll on Thursday, Johasburg won the first match in a see-saw affair, 16-14. At one point in the first game, Driscoll's Mary Winkler served seven unanswered points as double hits and mental mistakes put Johnsburg in the hole, 8- 2. A good dink at the net by Patti Haag gave Johnsburg the serve however, as Sue Dehn made up for two earlier double hits by smashing three serves for points while Haag and Cheri Kofler each placed good returns and Johnsburg came back, 7- 8. Laura Mouyard of Driscoll then followed suit by serving five straight points and Driscoll held a 12-7 lead. A picture-perfect dink at the net by Kelly Beitz, a hard spike "by Inge Dschida and two well-placed serves by Cheri Kofler jjit the lead, but Johnsburg lost the serve at 13-12. Again, Driscoll's Mary Winkler tried to do the damage by placing a nice spike in the left corner, giving her team a 14-12 lead, but the next serve went into the net as Inge Dschida took over the Johnsburg serve. She cut the lead on a serve that scorched between two befuddled Driscoll players, and Kathy Kling tied the score at 14 on a tap that balanced on the net top and dropped over. The next serve brought about a long volley which Dschida ended with a long return with overspin that ducked into the corner and Johnsburg led for the first time since the initial serve, 15- 14 • During the next volley, Johnsburg pushed a weak return over the net which could have spelled disaster, but Norine O'Neil came out of nowhere to block a viscious Driscoll spike to give the locals a stunning 16-14 victory. The victory mentally prepared the Skyhawks for game two in which a 15-6 cakewalk sent them into the Saturday championships. Game two never saw Johnsburg without the lead as long volleys seemed to work in Johnsburg's favor. All Conference junior Sue Dehn accounted for five of the Skyhawk points in game two, while Norine O'Neil served four points and Kathie Kling collected three points of her own. Inge Dschida stayed out of the limelight until late in the game as she served the last two points. On Saturday, however, it took a while for the Johnsburg spikers to get on track. Before a crowd of about 200, Johnsburg saw a lively Walther Luthran squad rack up 7 straight points to start out the first game as a mixture of good serving and Johnsburg blunders put the Skyhawk in the hole early. The spikers would not come from behind in this one, although they did come back with five straight points of their own as Cheri Kofler and Sue Dehn used spikes to get Johnsburg back in the match. Game two proved to be the most thrilling game of the year for the locals. With their backs against the wall, everyone seemed to do his job, and Johnsburg squeeked by, 17-15. Inge Dschida, a two-year all-conference pick and team captain, started game two by serving deep,then moving up to set up a perfect spike for Norine O'Neil. Johnsburg took a 2-0 lead on a hard, knuckleball serve by Dschida which deflected off two Walther Lutheran players, before giving up the serve as Kathy Kling mishit a return shot. Walther Lutheran scored its first point as Sue Dehn hit a perfect spike ball into the net, but came back to block a Walther spike to stop Walther on the next serve. The opponents scored another point on a good, low serve before Kathie Kling took over the Johnsburg serve and forced a Walther Lutheran mistake; Johnsburg led 3-1. Walther Lutheran scored the next three points on two good spikes, but Dschida put an end to that with a well-placed dink. Cheri Kofler showed commendable serving style as Walther Lutheran mishandled two straight serves. A timeout was called with the score at 5-5 and Walther Lutheran took over the serve by scoring two points on two Johnsburg mishits. _ ^ Patti Haag got one of those points back, but Walther Lutheran started to dominate play while scoring two more points on Johnsburg mistakes. Sue Dehn spiked one down the left sideline to keep Johnsburg close, and then they took the lead as the ball changed hands twice before Johnsburg forced two Walther Lutheran mistakes. At the timeout. Johnsburg led 10-9. Fine defensive play by both teams slowed the pace up as neither side could score until Patti Haag made a spectacular save of a sinking return which set up a fine Kofler dink shot and Johnsburg went on to score the next three points and seemingly the game at 13-9. Walther Lutheran was not to be denied however,as they tied the score using three spikes and a dink. Tonee holds the 100 and 200 freestyle records, setting the 100 record in 1979 with the time of 1:00.7 and the 200 set this year at 2:15. Her next serve was wide however, and Walther Lutheran tallied to tie and go ahead before Johnsburg could regain the serve. With the game at 15-14, Johnsburg tied the score on the play of the day, as Cheri Kofler served to set up her own spike, a long hard one that nestled the back line. Johnsburg had the momentum as Walther Lutheran double hit the next Kofler serve and kept Johnsburg alive in the finals with a serve off an opponents hands out of play to give the Skyhawks a 17-15 victory. / By now the home town fans were wild, but they didn't know that game three would hold much of the same excitement. The last game was full of long volleys and frazzled nerves. Walther Lutheran held an early 6-4 lead, but Norine O'Neil forced three mistakes by her opponents, before Kathie Kling recorded the only ace of the series as the Skyhawks moved to a 10-5 lead. Lutheran answered with six straight points to take an amazing 11-10 lead before Dschida and Haag each recorded points in trading two with Walther Lutheran. Johnsburg still trailed 13-12.
