Hutchinson Fights For Big Ten Javelin Johnsburg MVP's Honored Tom Hutchinson, 1976 graduate of McHenry High School, said he is preparing to charge the Big Ten with sex discrimination if a proposal to put the javelin event in the conference's mens track program is rejected by Big Ten athletic directors. As a javelin thrower for the University of Illinois in Champaign, Hutchinson has not been able to compete in conference matches although the Big Ten girls track program does have the javelin included. Since June, the U of I senior has cleared one ob­ stacle in his fight. On Oct. 29, the Big Ten track coaches voted to adopt the javelin by a 6-4 vote, but the final vote by athletic directors will take place Dec. 1-3. Hutchinson is hopeful of a favorable response, he was not encouraged by the coaches slim approval margin. He said that those coaches who voted against the proposal did not have enough "concern for the athletes." Arguments against the proposal include the financial difficulty in adding Hutchinson another event, and that most Big Ten schools do not have adequate facilities to field a javelin throw effectively. It is argued that women don't throw the javelin that far, so space limitations are not that much of a problem for girls. Hutchinson said he will prepare his sex discrimination case before the athletic directors meeting to show that he is "not bluffing." "It seemed like a clear-cut case," Hutchinson noted after talking to a few lawyers.
